This is one thing that has shocked me as I’ve studied over the years and learned more about this- that I truly didn’t know how to read. I still really have to fight to understand what I’m reading, make meaning of it, and hold it in memory. So much of my education was checklisted on top of the issues you share here, in combination with the lack of logical skill. It’s really interesting to me to think about how we bring and simultaneously discover meaning in text when we’re equipped with those skills when, beyond that, it is just symbols on a page.
Dude, this might be my favourite yet! Well done. Reading and thinking go hand in hand, and reading well is such an important element of thinking well. Shane (from the oft-mentioned and highly valuable Phrontisterium Substack) recommended "How to Read a Book" by Mortimer J. Adler, and it is an excellent resource with tools and tips for developing one's skill in reading.
