  • I often get messages on instagram asking how I train my chows. I learnt how to train my dogs from one of my freinds who is a dog trainer as his job. I will link his instagram below. I alreayd know most of this but its better getting an explanation from a trainer whilst I can film it :)

I'm a former Chowchow owner, if there's one advice I would give you is... Chowchow can be quite clever, my Chowchow "Dumpling" while he was still alive is that I never noticed he was observing me whenever I open his Door in his Dog House. One day I saw him outside his Dog House wondering who let him out, so I put him back inside and hid myself and waited if he knows how to open the door; I was surprised to see he learned how to use his paw to open the door and lock.

Didn't trained my chowchow extensively like that. My chow2 likes going to the beach. He has a good temperament, very sociable and very smart. He was so smart he was teaching me his cues like getting his blanket when he wants to sleep or get his leash if he wants to go outside. I missed him so much.

I love how different they can be. We have four chows. One of them LOVES being filthy. You can brush him out or wash him, he'll run outside, roll in racoon scat, find a mud puddle and lie down in it and you're watching he'll do it slowly to torture you. When he's filthy enough he raises his nose in the air and prances in super proud with his tail held high. The others will walk around water puddles to avoid getting wet or dirtly. Another is aloof and the family watchdog until it storms. Then she'll crawl under my desk and lie on my feet, but ONLY during thunderstorms. The youngest will jump up on the couch and crawl into your lap for petting. They're little nut balls. It's wonderful watching them grow older and learning all their little personality traits. And they have an impressive vocabulary. Super smart.

Chows chows are the cat versions of a dog. Yes they are loyal, sweet and do listen but they are also going to do what they want to do. They give you control over them when they want to do so. Not when you want it. Sometimes they don't want to be touched and want to be left alone and sometimes they want to be all over you. Its just how they are. Mine even poops and covers it with dirt lol They are fluffy cat dogs. Not for everyone. Do your research on the breed and you'll be just fine.

I also am a firmer Chowchow owner. I had two, Cody was a red chow and Smokey was the cream color like the pup in the video. They were good dogs, they both passed at 15 one year apart Cody first and then Smokey. Your pup is so cute, I really would not care if he didn’t do anything. I would be very happy to just hold him and love him.

Chow chows are adorable dogs, I'm just experiencing it. I have only one problem with them, that I would need help in and would be glad if you could give me any advice. At first, I got a male chow (Maci) and after 1,5 weeks a female chow (Nina). Maci is 3 weeks older than Nina, who is 7 weeks old now. They get along quite well, from first day they could sleep, eat, discover together, there is only a problem when it comes to playing. Because of the actual size difference (Maci is twice bigger than Nina) Nina gets aggressive sometimes when Maci starts playing with him, when he steps over him, when they wrestle and Nina is down. She is kinda afraid I guess and tries to protect herself so she becomes aggressive. But still Maci doesn't stop playing, he keeps doing it on his way. It's getting better from day to day, and for now they can play nicely, too but I need to watch when it's getting rough and stop them in time (I distract their attention or I clap one, say their names). They react to cue, too and I reward them when they play nicely and stop if I tell them. It also happens sometimes that Nina wants to play, but Maci is already sleepy and he doesn't, so Nina ends up bothering him that Maci doesn't seem to like. Neither of them is afraid of the other as they look for the other's company, they watch each other. But I don't dare to let them be alone for now, without anyone watching them. Mostly in the mornings both are so energetic and they get too excited. Do you think this behaviour will disappear after a while, maybe when their size will be the same? What else could I do to improve their playing habits?

I'm hopeful that within a couple months his testosterone drop will also settle some of his territorial choices (growling at men who enter the home, but he's even also currently vocalizing at just about anybody). @@kylieventures278 Chewey my 2 year old chow is not like the other dogs in temperament at all. He doesn't bite me but he does take a run at our bull mastiff occasionally, like you without any warning at all. We have noticed that if he is hyperexcited, all the other dogs are playing and bouncing around, he may bite. He also occasionally fixates on Jake, so we immediately correct him with redirection and having him lay down until he is calm.

@@carriejordan8999 how did you train your chowchow to listen to you? Cause Sugar our 3 month old chowchow though she does listen at times when I call her or tell her to sit but that's just it, how do you teach your dog to stop and calm down, she also sometimes hates it when I touch our other dogs, she will attempt to bite my hands if I do and how long did you train her?

@@isabellalucci6862 dogs are actually lactose-intolerant and cannot cope with too much dairy in their diets. Even small portions of cheese can lead to gastrointestinal upset, so if your dog develops diarrhoea it is better not to feed them dairy products again in the future. Cheese is also high in fat which can trigger flare-ups of pancreatitis, as well as leading to other health problems including obesity and diabetes.
That they like it isnt the same as to say its good for them.

    What BS.
I'm currently raising my 18th dog who is my 5th Chow. I have 60 years of experience raising dogs. I've had as many as 5 at a time.
Before training any animal, an unbreakable bond has to be established. I've never had to bribed a dog while training. By showing patience and what you would like the dog to do you will get a positive result. You send the wrong message by offering food for a dog to complete a task. It's a very common rookie mistake.
You have little understanding of dogs you shouldn't be recording 'how to' videos until you learn how to do it yourself correctly.

I understand you may have your own methods as do I. I train with 3 professional trainers. One in this video has a degree in animal behaviour. My other trainer been training 20+ years also. All three have different methods one of them don’t like using treats the others does. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this is mine and it works.

@@guruchows9539 Wow! I don even have a dog currently, but I take my hat off for you. Not because you're right/wrong in your training approach, but in the way you handled the comment above. That tells me a lot about you as a person, and for that alone, I personally would want to learn from you.
