  • Today, we got to introduce Alexis to the video for One by Metallica. This is one of my favorite videos of all time and definitely my favorite Metallica video. As a lifelong fan dating back to the start of Metallic in the 80's, it was awesome to introduce Alexis to greatness and to see how pumped she got watching the video. She figured out the premise very quickly and at the end was in full Metallica mode!!

Our favorites lines from the song:
    1. Can't tell if this is true or a dream
    2. Body my holding cell
    3. Hold my breath as I wish for death, Oh please, God, wake me

Yes, you are correct. They bought the right's to the movie itself, just for this video, to send the exact message, that it does, to those, who understand the lyric's, and what they stand for. And, they wrote this song, specifically with this movie/book story in mind. Now, in the movie, they show a mortar shell, doing the damage to him. But, in the book, it's literally an actual landmine, that does it, as they say in the lyric's...

I was an M1A1 tank crewman with the US Army, stationed in Germany at the time this album came out. You better believe this was in my earholes constantly (this song, and the rest of the album), especially for our winter gunnery in JAN 1989. "One" (along with Iron Maiden's "The Trooper") felt like it was written for us, and although I think most of us were pretty confident we'd give as good as we got if the WP came streaming down the Fulda Gap, we also realized it could be an absolute death trap. This song really seems to capture that, and when it was married to _Johnny Got His Gun_ for the video, it became a timeless classic. Side note, when we crossed the berm into Iraq a couple of years later, we had "The Shortest Straw" playing over our tank's intercom.
Alexis nailed the anxiety and anticipation that permeates the entire song and especially the video. Great job.

@@flickeringboxofficial There was a recent interview where James and Kirk talked about Cliff for a while. And they just recently came out with a new album called "72 seasons" which centers around the first 18 years of life. th-cam.com/video/Rh7KkjyjbCQ/w-d-xo.html
"72 Seasons came out of a book I was reading about childhood, basically, and sorting out childhood as an adult. And 72 seasons is basically the first 18 years of your life. How do you evolve and grow and mature and develop your own ideas and identity of self after those first 72 seasons?
"Some things are more difficult than others - you know, some things you can't unsee and they're with you for the rest of your life, and other things you're able to rewind the tape and make a new tape in your life. So that's the real interesting part for me, is how you're able to address those situations as an adult and mature." - James Hetfield

Being in high school at the time and living in the whole hair metal 80s band thing going on my parents didn't really like any of this or care for me listening to it but let me be and we would talk about some of it. Watching this video my mom came in the room and wondered about it and the heavy music but i showed her the video and she watched as I told her it was about an old movie. She then recognized it as a book she read in school in the early 60s. Things like this made them even more at ease about me listening to heavy metal cause it wasn't all sex drugs and rocknroll.

I always will watch YT reactions to this song whenever it is the original (official) version with clips from the movie. I do that because I'm very interested to see if the reactors, especially younger ones, comprehend the meaning and/or message of the video. Like others have commented, Alexis is such an intelligent young lady to be able to understand, and rather quickly, what is going on with the combination of the lyrics and movie clips. I am truly impressed, and you, Burch, have done both her and this music video a great service by exposing her to this. Thank you.
As a 23-year Army veteran (Infantryman) with a total of 4 combat tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, this video of "One" is, for me, much more difficult to actually watch than it is to hear the actual song from the album, primarily because of the movie clips. But, I do watch reactor's reactions to this video because I want to know if they actually get it. When they do, I feel that it validates them and the message of the song. I lost a very good friend to an IED while we were deployed together and know others who were seriously wounded by IEDs as well. The thoughts of the wounded Soldier in the movie are very distressing (as they should be), especially when he cries to his mother "I'm having a nightmare and I can't wake up!" It takes a lot to suppress my own "water works" when seeing that after the experience of visiting a couple of wounded friends in the combat hospital at Kandahar Airfield.
    Again, thank you both.
Now, I would like to make two recommendations for future reactions....
    1. Probably the most reacted to video on TH-cam: "Ghost Love Score" by Nightwish from their performance at the 2013 Wacken Metal Festival. It may help to find a version of this one that includes lyrics. A truly sonic experience.
    2. If you have the patience for a long video, try "Illumination Theory" by Dream Theater from their DVD "Breaking The Fourth Wall; Live From The Boston Opera House." This is a progressive metal band that probably has more collective musical talent than any band that is currently performing, and this particular performance includes an orchestra and choir. Lyrics are not necessary to be included in this video because they're relatively easy to understand...but they are thought-provoking.
    Take Care!
    Looking forward to future reactions!

I remember when this album was released, me and my buddies were on a rotation to NTC( Fort Irwin, CA). We were able to bring some personal items with us and one of us brought a boom box and one of us brought the newly released And Justice For All album . We rode around NTC blasting this whole record. This was pre- Iraqi freedom . This whole album hits home with me so hard. Love you Jack , Paulie, and Chuck.

In my region (Canada), this was the song that bridged the gap between metalheads and all the preppies/skaters. The cliques finally had common ground.
EDIT : Actually in my particular circles, the bridge was gapping earlier than One ; it was actually the EP that came out prior that brought the cliques together... I think it was the Danzig medley cover (Last Caress / Green Hell) that was the favorite. The EP built the bridge, One just cemented it.
Proving once again that (good) music brings people together.

I grew up in a very conservative town. Rock'n'roll acts were outright banned - your only choices for live music was country or more country. Even when I left in the 2000s the local rock'n'roll station wouldn't play Metallica because they were far too "hard". This video was so profound that my music teacher - in that dimly lit bastion of conservatism - rolled out the TV cart to show us how beautifully complex and philosophically deep metal music could be. It wasn't the one dimensional boogeyman we were led to believe.

The hell? I never heard of an area being like that. There's radical people on both sides. Music like this being banned? It couldn't actually be banned. I'm guessing that's just another way of saying the people were like "we hate this music so much that anyone else that listens to it will be judged and criticized". Thank goodness I started listening to this music even as a devout conservative. Music shouldn't be restricted to one's political or ideological side when it's music like this.

When this soldier starts talking and mentions that they can't hear him... I can relate to this very much! I died 09/01/2000 from a severe head trauma injury, my brain literally torn all the way across the frontal lobe and all the way behind my ears. I was dead for 57min-37sec and came back while in the hospital elevator on the way to the Morgue. I immediately went into a 12-day coma. While in a coma, I could hear everything! Mom was reading To Kill A Mockingbird to me, then a doctor entered the room and asked her what my final directives were, and was I an organ donor? I WAS SCREAMING OUT "I'M STILL HERE!", but I knew they couldn't hear me. Thank God my Mom didn't give up on me! Heaven forbid, if any of y'all have a friend or a family member that falls into a coma... talk to them, they can hear you.

Alexis was glued to the screen like she was watching a horror movie. So glad to see a country movie fan enjoy metal, I’ve recently gotten my daughters boyfriend into metal, he’s still a virgin so he hasn’t quite learned great metal musicians.
Not sure of your age Burch but we seem to a similar taste in music, at least on the metal side. I’m turning 57 Saturday and really enjoy metal so much so that my son and his buddies started a metal band, one thing I’ve noticed is that my metal tastes have gotten harder as I age with the likes of Meshuggah, Slaughter to Prevail, Opeth, Gojira and Lamb of God. I really like today’s Danish/Swedish type of metal with the use of 7/8 string guitars, killer riffs, less lead guitar and insane double bass blasts.

ONE is a masterpiece! A truly powerful song that not only shows Metallica's prowess for song writing, but also their mastery of their instruments. It is the anchor of their incredible music catalog. This video is also a masterclass in storytelling. The imagery provides so much emotion to those lyrics, as they come to life right in front of you. Also, it is just really cool seeing them just jamming. This was their first music video ever as well. And as music video debuts go, this is hands down one of the greatest! Great reaction!

So many reactors overly focus or they focus on the wrong sections at the wrong times and miss out on the fully meaning. Alexis, you did such an amazing job on picking up on all aspects of the story line and connecting them perfectly.
