I really love how he keeps the sound JUST on the edge of squeaking/bad sounds, but doesn't let them go over into it, so it becomes rich and full, adds to the tone. That takes daring
Every time I heard these amazing-master-piece performed by Max Baillie, motivates myself to continue studying viola to reach the point of sublime and the extraordinary way you play. You are unique and fantastic. In my humble opinion. From Puerto Rico. Dr. Alfonso R. Santos
Hello Dr Santos, thanks for your comment, I'm happy to inspire you! Best of luck with your practice and music-making, and for the coming year 2020. Max
A series of unexpected events have led up to me wondering why I would consider investing an order of magnitude more than the total value of my other instruments, in a great viola. This, right here. That's why. This is the kind of voice I want for my own compositions eventually. (Update for anyone interested: I went for it. Amazing viola soon in my hands.)
The fact is that Bach himself often transcribed his works for other instrument, so actually his musical genius was to an extensively degree idiomatic to almost any instrument. An outstanding performance by Max Baillie that the Master himself would have highly acknowledged..!
As a “professional violist” in Hong Kong I am so ashamed of myself for not having the ability to pull this off and keep using Bach cello suites for auditions....you are such a great inspiration! I am going to practice this piece very hard and put a recording on TH-cam !
ah, don't be hard on yourself! it's bloody difficult that's for sure. When I first started learning it I couldn't get through the first page without getting tense. Main challenge is to practise without tension, to make a hard thing feel natural. Then you can let the fantasy take over in the music... good luck!
Musically so satisfying--beautiful sound, powerful emotion, technically outstanding! Makes me love Bach and my viola even more to hear a performance like this, :) Now to practice...
Fantastic music and performance. I have acquired the sheet music for viola but need to study it thoroughly before attempting to play it. So many challenging and unusual turns and harmonies. Max really excels mastering this music. We are fortunate he already interpreted it for us to enjoy!
I have to play this to my daughter. Just hope she doesn't want to jump to play this straight away - She is still struggling with the cello suite #1. Extremely nice, lovely playing. Thanks indeed, can't wait for more.
What a fabulous piece, and great sound and concentration. Will now explore more about the Chromatic Fantasy, and find a cave in the Dordogne for the next time.
Bravo and beautiful, just heard in this Tuesday dec. 17th. Holiday gift for me, since I am learning/relearning left handed viola and violin accident and, I have no choice but to learn that way. You Mr. Max inspire me thank you.
I just can go 100 metres far from my mobile, and i still can hear it. Its like... sound travels on anywhere you wanna go... I'll keep the hard job to one day ge that piece, thanks for uploading Max!!
Hi Miguel, thanks for watching! Do I understand correctly you're learning yourself? If you need help with playing I'm going to be uploading video tutorials onto this channel. Please subscribe to get updates. All the Best, Max
Would the performer be willing to tell us something about his instrument amd his string set-up? As a violist myself, albeit not nearly as accomplished as Mister Baillie, i always find the topic of interest... Thank you, Sir Max.^^
Thanks Mohsin, glad you enjoyed it! Such an awesome piece of music. I've got plans for other videos--watch this space or subscribe if you're interested. All the Best, Max
@@maxbailliemusic Thanks for the reply Max! Nice to find out about another good modern maker. Also, great performance of the Bach! I've been learning it that past week as an "etude," so I know full well the technical (and musical) challenges it presents. You make it look easy!
Maybe a five string electric violin? I presume 5th string is C, so that could do i It I found a really good and surrealistic dreamscape video.(from the 90s sometime. IRozanne (don't know her last name's) did it.
This was a few comments above, more recent: Max Baillie Max Baillie 1 year ago Hey the edition I have is this one: www.sharmusic.com/Sheet-Music/Viola/Unaccompanied/Bach-JS---Chromatic-Fantasy-BWV-903---Viola-solo---transcribed-by-Zolt-225-n-Kod-225-ly---Boosey-Hawkes-Edition.axd Good luck!
Why is there no violin version of the Chromatic Fantasy? It could be moved to a key that could accommodate the low notes or some sort of "trick tuning "could be used(.If there is a violin version, I've never hears it.)
i was thinking:Why does it HAVE to be in Dm?Dvorak's Fm Romance has low notes(Aflat and Dflat are rarely used outside of noturnes on piano.) Also, I am a guitarist and have used "alternative tuning:" tune to C#m the whole guitar, tune to double B string for a Portugese guitar, etc. What about the G string to F and D to C( you now have almost viola tuning)(sort of). Please try my suggestions.
yes violinists and violists normally aren't too adventurous with different tunings, mostly because the pieces written for those instruments rarely demand alternative tuning. I guess each key has a certain colour which the composer wanted. And as far as string playing goes, the resonances of a particular key correspond to where the open strings are and various resonant notes so if the key changes then those resonances change.. so if you're actually switching instruments then there's more freedom I guess because the whole colour of the sound changes anyway. I mean the Chromatic Fantasy is originally an organ piece! But I like it on viola. I like playing with different tunings myself.
Yes. but you could at least play it(dispite tonal variations and mood) Could you at least try and see? Most composers will try out music in several keys before settling on a final version. I would like to hear it. I've heard played on an electric bass(did not care for)
sure I'll give it a go but being in D minor on viola means the whole range of the piece is distributed over a playable range of the instrument, whereas changing the key one way or another by any significant interval would make it unplayable
It will sound even squeakier on the violin. You will miss the rich bass sound of the viola that matches the characteristic of this piece which is originally meant for the keyboard.. keyboard to solo violin transcriptions do not work well, but i can imagine this being transcribed to a violin and piano quite nicely on a different key.
+Ivan Friedman I agree. The tone is great, but the essential dynamic of the piece is lost and, to be frank, is probably not possible on a string instrument.
I really love how he keeps the sound JUST on the edge of squeaking/bad sounds, but doesn't let them go over into it, so it becomes rich and full, adds to the tone. That takes daring
Pain and pleasure are closely related- this is the drama of violin/viola much like human existence.

sounds amazing on viola
flat and boring clean sound - have no idea why the people like this

Beyond incredible execution and interpretation. The most powerful thing that still haunts me is those last two notes. Phenomenal!

I can't believe how convincing this is.
Very impressive improvisation - like a "Fantasy" really should be. Rare powerful sound. Very good violist and very good viola. Thanks!

What a great use of viola's tone repertoire you made there! Amazing recording :))

Thanks Igor, the viola is a 2009 Stephan von Baehr. It was a while ago but I think the A is Larsen, the D and G Helicore, and the C Spiracore.
Wow! Brilliant!
Superb tone quality!

Very nice performance
Very fine playing - a very difficult piece. Eric Shumsky
