I’m struck by how youthful this gentleman appears. Perhaps this reinforces the mantra: “It’s not the years, it’s the miles.” Bless him and his fellow warriors.
Had a friend whose son went to Buds and was gone on day 3. His dad thought he was going to be a SEAL. Hit him hard, I tried to explain it to them both but they didn’t want to hear it.
Don Shipley and his wife used to run a week-long program called Extreme SEAL Experience where guys from all walks of life could get a small taste of what BUD/S is like. They no longer offer it, though.
@@Steviekneecapzif you think you’re a loser, you probably are! That’s what the guy in the mirror told me. Ok, off to the liquor store before they close ✌️
Anyone who thinks passing BUDS turns you into a super soldier should go read up on Operation Redwings. I often wonder if it's just used to cut the numbers and weed out those whose faces don't fit.
When you join the infantry don’t settle for just infantry. Go airborne and then RIP. Or whatever it’s called now. Start there go to ranger school. Serve some time and never fuck up. At least do airborne. You will not just be a numbers game in combat. If you make it to ranger at least you know they won’t throw you to the wolves.

After the first 6 weeks of vacuum tube electronics and 2 weeks solid state electronics when I started week 9 the Fire Control Solution, I was one of eleven men left out of a starting class of 45 men. I got the MK86 GFCS as my ‘C’ school. I was in school for a full 2 years before I ever went to the fleet.
It’s also sheer luck. Top tier studs get injured. It’s extremely rare for one candidate to go all the way through without getting rolled back for injury. Everyone gets injured. It jut depends on what injury you get and how long it takes to heal. On top of all the other things required to make it through all 3 phases, sheer luck is a part of it. You can’t control stress fractures. They happen or they don’t.
I found some information online that said he joined the Navy in 2006. So he's probably mid to late 30's now. I don't know when this interview took place.
These dudes get out because it's a tough life. When you watch friends get shot or killed, it takes a toll on you. And for SEALs it's tough for them to get out of teams unless they become officers.

@@shaunr5450 and they use the attrition rate as a recruiting tool. I’m starting to believe that most people going to buds are more interested in getting out and doing TH-cam videos to be like Jocko instead of being an actual commando.
Bullshit. That’s a ludicrous statement. It’s the focus on physicality that is the difference. Buds injures people at a catastrophic rate. The army doesn’t do it that way. They think it’s stupid. And they may be right. But that is the difference. It has nothing to do with some lame boot camp. It has to do with the focus of the training and the day to day routines that injure even top tier candidates.
@@mortyrosenstein4211I think what he is trying to say is by going to a “ real “ bootcamp and spending a few years in the fleet or regular ARMY as an infantryman it builds you up brick by brick so by the time you ever try out for anything like RASP or SF you are already an experienced infantryman and have built up the capability and toughness and muscle memory required to do the basic job. Other SPECOPS work off of a crawl walk run foundation and BUDS tryouts have near zero previous experience on any level and it’s straight to run.
Yep this is why Delta force already recurits those from special Ops in different branches like the 75th ranger regiment Green berets. They recurit members who already served for like 3 to 5 years and they know the basics.
Read Ben Milligan’s book “ By Water Beneath the Walls”. You will read the history of Spec Ops units and why “Big Army” and “Big Marine Corps” cannot tolerate spec ops units for longer than absolutely necessary. The cultures are to absorb them. So if you want to kill off the SEALs, then pray for what you suggest. Meanwhile, berate on the table for how long the “Raiders” and “ Delta” will last; again, based on history ……
@ thanks for the heads up. I may actually read it. However, I don’t think they are serving us well. Honestly, I think we get more out of the movies than them. Delta is different. But Seals…if there a part of the Marines then you join the Navy to do Navy stuff, Marines to do Marines stuff.
That’s honestly not a terrible idea but 1. Navy needs that money coming in and 2. BUD/S isn’t designed to make Seals, it’s designed to generate Deckapes and bosunmates, undesignated sailors, etc. The jobs that nobody wants.
