Great video! I'm glad there are other people out there that also love growing cyrtopodiums. I'm in Florida and have seen the wild ones, and while they do grow epiphytically, the largest ones i've found in the swamps were all growing on rotten cypress stumps, a couple feet off the ground. I myself only grow them in a terrestrial peat based mix, even punctatum. keep up the great work with the cigar orchids and the videos. You've got my subscription.
tji0714 Good to meet you! You’re right, it seems like there’s only a handful of folks that are into this genus. I’d love to see the wild ones. I’m very jealous!
I love that big bulbous base growing habit! It reminds me of a puppy & when you check the size of the paws, it gives you an idea of how big the pup is going to get ... they always have bigger paws than what their actual puppy body size is 😃 really enjoyed this video! Thank you 😊

Hi, very informative! I have 2 Cyrtopodium punctatum im trying to make happy. We also live in Texas - lots of heat/sun. One seller told me not to overwater, keep them super dry.. The first one not doing great. I just put them back ourside & watered thoroughly. Any tips on bringing back the ill one? I think leaf spike is dead (feels hollow, but the cugar loking growth appears solid. Any help appreciated.
@@SVKLOrchids thanks for the informative videos. Been following your channel since the lockdown here started. The topics about Cattleya maxima, Cattleya amethystoglossa and Cattleya walkeriana caught my attention. Since I started growing the same species just recently. 😊
"looks like asparagus" - way back, I believe, the belief was the orchids belonged with the Liliales, until people finally figured out to group orchids with the Asparagales.
thrips are terrible. i accidentally introduced them into my house collection bringing cut dahlias from the garden indoors. took me a month to get rid of them because I didn't realize the early stages of damage. you have to go nuclear with them and it doesnt help that so many of them are pesticide resistant too.

Nina Bosse I never thought about it that way, but you’re right! Great analogy!
These are impressive, scary orchids, never seen before! Thank you Stephen!
Thanks!
Very interesting. I was not aware at all of these
Charles McKemie There are a ton of species! Most just never make it north of their home country. 😢
I will have to be on the lookout now that I am aware
Charles McKemie Definitely!
Love the videos, it was very informative, still in the search for one can't wait.
Artemisia Thank you so much! I should have another out this evening!

Your Teacher Hi Irena, unfortunately I don’t have any Galeandra 😢
On May 2nd you can bet I’ll be up really early for Stephen Moffitt’s new orchid list lol
Logan K._. Ha! Me too! He’s got great stuff!

Without photos it’s tough to say! If it’s severely dehydrated, I’d say water! They love tons of water starting at now.
Any tips for deflasking these guys? Same media as adults? Have a flask of C. paniculatum that needs to come out as was shaken up a bit in transport.
I’d use spag or fine bark
Ok thanks. I have some seedlings of Ansellia africana I deflasked about 1 month ago that are doing well. Will take the same approach.
@@Bulbophyllum69 Perfect!
Perfect for my climate!! Do you have some for sale?
Lourdes Albellar Unfortunately, not right now!
Anorher genera to add on my heat loving orchid wishlist. 😍
Orchids in the tropics Yes! Helping people know about heat lovers is one of the purposes of my channel!

Orchids in the tropics Nice! Let me know if you ever have questions!
@@SVKLOrchids I surely will. Thanks. 😊
Do you have any Ansellia Africana?..if you do can you make a video about how to grow them?
Eduardo Campos I do! I’ve got three plants right now. I’ll definitely make a care video when they bloom!
I have a baby Cigar orchid with black rotten roots and no new roots growing. I’m wondering if there is any chance I can save her. Please help me!
That’s a tough situation! I’d say put it on a damp (not super wet) bed of sphagnum and hopefully a new growth will pop up in spring.
Thank you for your advice! I let you know if I have success.
@@isabellamorado8961 Yes, I’m curious to see how it goes!
Amazing bouquet!!
One question: rest period, which temperatures you give it in winter?
Sergiy_Sergio This one saw temps from 40-100 this winter.
If you are using peat, that suggests it likes somewhat more acidic growing medium, yes?
J. D. They seem to really like it! I don’t know if they are adapted to acidic soil naturally or are just very accepting of these conditions.
@@SVKLOrchids now that is interesting...
Your videos are freakin awesome sir
Shea Eastman Ha! Much appreciated! I’m glad they’re useful!
Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis very useful! Keep it up
awesome plants..:)
mine is making two new growths..:)
Martin Spijker Nice! I hope it grows quickly fit you!
@@SVKLOrchids roots just start to grow so i repotted it in coco, moss and some small bark, later on i wil mix in some slow release fertilizer..:)
Martin Spijker Sounds like a good mix!
Are andersonii similar in growth, size and habit??
Lanusungkum Jamir I actually haven’t grown that species so I can’t tell you for sure!
What is a thrip? No natural predators?
John c They’re little tiny white bugs that suck plant sap. They don’t seem to be eaten by anything, but disappear when the new growth gets larger.
Like an aphid only probably smaller? Ladybugs have no interest?
John c Yep! Very small and you’re right about the lady bugs. No interest 😥

Dan Edwards If I ever cook one of these spikes, I’ll make a video!! 😂😂
Now this something I never knew existed. Looks like cross between a Catasetum x tolumnia x Arnold Schwarzenegger ;-)
jazzpur Ha! I think you’re right!
Godzilla size hehehe. Gorgeous thou. Thanks for sharing. Keep safe
Tony Garcia Definitely a monster!

Spencer I agree! They’re a real pain!!
Super awesome badass guard orchids! Great video, clone that mini punctatum! :)
My Green Pets Definitely! I’m really hoping I get a spike this year!
