Richard Wolff: “History Is About To REPEAT Itself & It’s Terrifying”

  • Is the United States on a path that echoes the rise of fascism in 20th-century Germany? In this special edition, Richard Wolff dives deep into the historical and economic parallels that make this question more urgent than ever. Bypassing the usual segments and guest interviews, Wolff presents a sobering, systematic comparison between post-WWI Germany and the economic trajectory of post-1970s America-tracing how mass dislocation, political failure, and targeted scapegoating can create fertile ground for fascist movements.
From the disintegration of Germany’s working-class power after 1918 to the slow collapse of stable manufacturing jobs in the U.S. after 1970, Wolff draws a chilling portrait of how economic despair and political vacuum allow demagogues to redirect anger away from capital and toward vulnerable populations. By examining both the historical record and the current moment-with ICE, systemic disenfranchisement, and rhetorical scapegoating-he asks how far the analogy truly extends, and whether the left in America is prepared to counter the dangers ahead.

Thank you for this. I'm from German descent and have heard this from my grandparents (WW I) & and parents who lived through WWII. Hitler was able to take advantage of German's desperation to come into power. Right now, what is happening in the US feels eerily like 1930's Germany. I feel so much empathy for the UScitizens who did not vote for Trump but have to live through this.

I am 70 and retired after 47 years working as an auto mechanic. My father lived to be 88. I live in section 8 housing in Northern Idaho, really a very nice place to live and a very nice 1 bedroom apartment. I think it would be foolish to believe that I am going to be allowed to live in section 8 housing for the next 18 years. This assumes I live to be the same age as my father. tRump's bill reduces HUD funding by 40%, effectively eliminating section 8 housing. Will the state of Idaho pick up my rent subsidy? I don't think the state of Idaho can make up for losing so much federal aid. Perhaps the state will move me and others like me into some type of group or communal housing. I am going to enjoy my retirement while I can. I don't think I can save enough money to maintain this lifestyle I have now.

Geography is probably the biggest difference. It’s comparable to China so looking at China’s history may be more valuable than looking at Europe’s. Europe is full of peer competitors who have throughout history taken turns being on top. Russia looks big but most of it is not very hospitable to human life. China has mostly been regionally dominant and has natural geographic barriers on all sides, so has had isolationist tendencies. If you use China as a model for the US, then we can predict a type of Warring States period in the US’s future.

If you want to warn people about what is happening please do not use words like, 'Demagogue' because the people most susceptible to Demagogues do not know what the word means.
The people who do know what it means will probably not need warning because they are either enlightened enough in which case you will be preaching to the converted or they will not care because they figure that they will not be amongst those that will suffer in which case you will need to stress other issues that may effect them.
I suggest that you define terms like Demagogue or simply say something like; 'Political Leaders that prey upon peoples ignorance and prejudices rather than addressing their concerns with rational and effective policies.'
The very best of luck! (The Demagogues will of course just call you a goddam commie!)

Business needs to be reigned in. They are not elected by the people. They must stand their taxes like everyone else. They should not be allowed to destroy families by farming out jobs to wicked regimes that treat their own people like dirt. Instead, those countries must be forced to pay their workers a good wage or their goods will be taxed disproportionately. Organisations that produce goods in the U.S. should be rewarded over those that do not. Those who stand as politicians should accept their salaries as written and not be allowed to make money by passing laws that benefit corporations but to the detriment of Americans. This catastrophe has happened because politicians were mendacious. Hold pols to a high standard. No one forces them to run for power. Then all pols must be allowed an equal stipend to run for office. Once it’s used up then that’s it. This prevents the wealthy from being the only people allowed to run for office, even the president. It will also encourage people who give a damn about right and wrong to have a chance at becoming a politician. Finally the current SCOTUS must be broken up and its new recruits must be chosen on judicial merit rather than by mendacious presidents. Chief justices and Justices on the SCOTUS must not be allowed to accept any bribes, and any hint of corruption must be investigated and when substantiated they should be removed in ignominy, losing all pension rights, favours etc. This would apply equally to Republican or Democrat leaning people. Politics has no place on the Supreme Court.

Not only is China rising as the economic powerhouse in the world, they don't waste trillions on stupid, pointless war after war after war that gets them nothing. All China has to do is wait for America's economy to completely collapse, where they can no longer sustain their massive military spending, and then take what ever they want. The American dollar is tanking. Their bond market is tanking. unemployment is rising and no one wants to lend them money, for both economic and retaliatory reasons. China is 5000 year old society. They know how to wait, and since they own the second most American debt of any country, they could tank the American economy in an instant if they wanted to, just by dumping that debt.

Sorry Richard the problems in the 1970's was the oil shock and the dropping of the gold standard...the 1980's saw the computer revolution start but the political parties failed to manage the economy and were devoted to "pure" capitalism which demanded lower taxes and globalisation saw a few jobs leave. But the real problem was the failure in the 1980 thru 2010 was the collapse of the real wages for the middle and lower class workers. Hence USA destroyed the middle class and thus its own economy...since Trump we have just seen this accelerate and the latest tax transfer to the wealthy 1% will just reinforce this. Trump uses racism to identify someone to blame.

    1) To gain extra congressional seats through population-based apportionment, and
    2) To prop up Social Security 15-20 years down the road.
It takes about 2 to 3 workers to support just one Social Security recipient. Right now, there are around 40 million Gen Alpha kids and 73 million Millennials-the largest working-age group heading into retirement.
Do the math. We’re staring down a serious demographic and economic crisis-and immigration is being used as a band-aid for a system that’s breaking.

Business has the concept of "normal profit". I imagine it's still 10% after all costs & deductions. Accounting is much more creative than people think. When demand is slack, prices tend to sag. Valuations are less than before. Well, that value evaporates into the ether. Luckily, tax and business policy changes allow companies to account for slack times. We live with less. Without sales, nothing in business happens. So, for people to have purchasing power, you have to prime the pump. Debt is extendable and refinanceable and bankruptcy doesn't mean the end. Try to freeze a head of lettuce to extend it's shelf-life. Doesn't work. There are rules to keep things flowing and the system is designed for agreements to keep purchasing power humming ... until they fail.
