- Gijón is a city and municipality in north-western Spain. It is the largest city and municipality by population in the autonomous community of Asturias. It is located on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea in the Bay of Biscay, in the central-northern part of Asturias; it is approximately 24 km (15 mi) north-east of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias, and 26 km (16 mi) from Avilés. With a population of 271,780, Gijón is the 15th largest city in Spain.
Gijón forms part of a large metropolitan area that includes twenty councils in the center of the region, structured with a dense network of roads, highways and railways and with a population of 835,053 inhabitants in 2011, making it the seventh largest in Spain.
During the 20th century, Gijón developed as an industrial city in the steel and naval industries. However, due to the decline in manufacturing in these industries, in recent years Gijón is undergoing a transformation into an important tourist, university, commercial and R&D center. Gijón is the location of the Radiotelevisión del Principado de Asturias, the neighbourhood of Cimavilla, the Universidad Laboral de Gijón, the Revillagigedo Palace, and the adjoining Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista.

Gijón (en asturiano, Xixón) es un concejo -denominación que reciben los municipios asturianos- y una ciudad española con la categoría histórica de villa. Se sitúa a orillas del mar Cantábrico, en el Principado de Asturias, comunidad autónoma de la que es el municipio más poblado, con 272 202 habitantes en 2021.Es la única entidad singular de población de la parroquia en el concejo.
Geográficamente se localiza junto a una bahía en la zona central-septentrional de Asturias, a 28 km de Oviedo y 26 km de Avilés, formando parte de una gran área metropolitana que abarca veinte concejos del centro de la región. Esta área está vertebrada por una densa red de carreteras, autopistas y ferrocarriles y contaba una población de 835 053 habitantes en 2011, los cuales la convierten en la séptima de España. En la península ibérica se sitúa en la parte central de la cornisa cantábrica y a escala europea en la zona sur del Arco Atlántico.

Walk begins at Plaza Mayor (Main Square) and covers some of the major streets in the city center.
We just got our resident visas to move to Spain, we have chosen Asturias, because it is not overpopulated, super clean and weather is very nice. We chose well! Asturias is beautiful.

Thank you for the tour and it’s a beautiful city! I was there once for a day 32 years ago and didn’t get to see a lot of Gijon. But I got to stay in its sister city Oviedo and stayed there for a month.
