  • The Toronto Raptors former star Pascal Siakam has been absolutely DOMINANT in the first round of the NBA Playoffs this year against the Milwaukee Bucks, and now Raptors insiders Josh Lewenberg, Michael Grange and more have been expressing their displeasure with the trade. Ben Rogers breaks down the criticism and whether or not it is warrented.

The problem wasn’t the trade, the problem was the TIMING of the trade. They basically traded their best player when he was worth the least. They sold WAY low. All because the front office misplayed their hand LAST year and weren’t able to identify that the team needed to rebuild around Barnes LAST year. They got lucky in finding a trade partner for Anunoby that was almost certain they could resign him. But…they lost FVV for nothing and Siakam for FAR less than he’s worth. Asset management like that is the way you become a bad team.

I agree that the team came up short on the trade front for Spicey P.
Let me point out that the team is being shadowed by one board member 'Edward Rogers' who is a big anti-Masai and basketball person. He also led the charge against MLSE seeking out a WNBA team. So 'Larry Tanenbaum' reduced his ownership percentage, took a top Female Raptors Executive and is now heading a new move forward for a pro WNBA team for Toronto.
FYI after being a 30 year Rogers Customer I am now seriously considering leaving them for a new cellphone provider.

your personal take on this is spot on IMO Ben. Josh & co are kind of playing both sides by criticizing front office for not getting more but then congratulating P on his future "bag." I mean, it's precisely the pricetag on that bag that ultimately led to FO choosing to move OG & Pascal in favor of a youth movement. I think they legitimately believed the team was going to achieve greater things to start the season and were willing to enter a tax era if the team with OG/P etc looked like an emerging threat in the East. unfortunately, we simply didn't have the right pieces. That's when players leave town. At least we got reasonable returns for them. The media critiques were similarly from the position of privlaged spectator when FVV walked for nothing last year. FO will never score a pure win with the local media unless we raise a Larry again. Damned if you do damned if you don't. They consider it their job to critique and that's their right. I just hope they still remember to celebrate in between the relatively ignorant (not meant insultingly just plain facts) articles they write which lack a behind the scenes knowledge of the actual options facing the franchise. C'est la vie. Great to see OG & P thriving.
    Cheers

Not a fumble… his defense is suspect now… bad match up for bucks… Indiana’s offer would be the best available since Siakam would only be traded to a team that would sign for the max. If we don’t sign him to the max, he would have signed somewhere else.

The Jazz would not have given him up if they saw something we do. This Trade will look bad unless the 19 Pick Turn out yo be a starting caliper player as soon as year one. The pascal situation was dragged on for too long and just needed to come to an end. There’s a bunch of delusional fans that believe pascal was going to resign for some average deal . Masai knows more than any fan or these “insiders” in terms of what pascal was looking for and he moved him because he likely knew it was supermax money that he didn’t want to give him. Also people think you can just give out supermax deals like that without sitting down with guys like Ed Rogers. Those guys likely didn’t want to invest that kind of money into pascal after missing the playoffs and being 500 team this season. Masai probably just wanted to move on after pascal messed up all his deals by telling teams he’s not resigning with them.

I just wish for once he could get a superstar of some sort to play alongside Scottie because I honestly feel that with a star PG and center to rotate with quickly and poetle at an even rate would have the raptors relevant again without hindering Immanuels development or breaking Jacob in the process🤷🏼‍♂️

The problem wasn't just with the Siakam trade. It was with how the franchise allowed player after player from the 2019 team to go for nothing. My gripe is how they haven't been able to remain play off competitive since. A championship organization should have the resources to be able to do so and at least replace players with similar caliber counterparts. It was a crap trade when it happened. Pascal was averaging 22.2 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists when traded while playing in an offense that neutralized his strengths making him a secondary option. When trading and All Star/All NBA type of player a team should get an All Star player in return or a starter plus Lottery pick(s) and/or young talented players. The Pacers gave Toronto none of that and instead gave them some bench fodder (Brown, Lewis Jr, Nwora) plus 3 non Lottery draft picks aka magic beans. The Raps traded one of those magic beans and Lewis Jr for Olynyk and Ogbaji. As the trade stands now: Pascal for Brown, Olynyk, Ogbaji, Nwora, 2024 #19 and 2026 FRP TBD. OG, a lesser player, brought back 2 starters: RJ and IQ.

look I think we all know if we are honest pascal siakam is much better than scottie barnes at this point in their careers. that wasnt the issue. it was giving scottie barnes more reps so he can develop and in a few years if his ball handling improves, he can be as good or better than siakam offensively. the issues with what raptors got for siakam is really a product of siakam sabotaging his trade value and teams not wanting to give up alot with siakam saying he wont sign with other teams if he is traded but rather explore the free agent market. so if ya want to blame anyone for the value they got back for siakam, blame siakam himself.

These guys are idiots. Buck dont even have Giannis. The reaction to 2 games and only one win in the the first round of the playoffs against a short handed team is a little over board. Pascal is putting up nice numbers for sure, but this is still an over reaction. Imagine having a maxed Pascal, Maxed rookie extension on Barnes RJ;s contact and trying to resign quickley. Youre in the tax already and you have 4 players. These dudes just cant move on from Siakam is kinda pathetic at this point. Also they never track the entirety of the trade which hasnt compeltely panned out until you see what players are aquired in the draft, everyone also seems to forget about the 26 first round pick we also aquired in the trade... So the Siakam trade; Brown, Nwora, Kelly, Agabaji, 2024 first round pick, 2026 first round pick(top 4 protected). When we see what those draft picks pan out to be you cant fully access the trade. If brown gets flipped into something(first round pick?) that adds onto the tracking of the trade.. These trades value are not always determined by the intial move..

Ya well they coulda probably had Jalen Johnson last summer if Pascal didn't purposely tank his trade value. Of course all you Siakam Stans are gonna let that slide.

The team was a bust when things fell apart last year, around the time we lost the play-in. Then Van Vleet left to big contract elsewhere. Coach walked /got fired? Remember, Siakam was sporadic at best, OG was underpaid. Getting nothing for Van Vleet IS the Biggest mistake. The rest was inevitable (btw Indian will lose in the first round,, just wait and see.). Only the future will tell but, Siakem was obviously overpaid and getting rid of him for picks was the best option. The future looks bright with Barns, especially if we can develop a pick.....

Siakam was no longer a fit after you got into a rebuild. He needs a Max and as a second option at best it was not a supermax that fit the timeline.

Masai spends more of his time and effort on Basketball Africa and the Giants of Africa program than he does the Raptors. What sealed it for me that it is time to move on from him was the acquisition of Ochai.
It bugs me because he is the son of one of Masai's best friends and obviously someone Masai has known for decades. He isn't that talented, yet here he was in the starting lineup of an NBA team for multiple times this season. Why? How?

Take the good with the bad Raptors fans. Yes Siakam is better than Brown, Nwora and picks. The Raptors didn't want to pay Siakam 280M over 5 years. Everyone knows this. The OG trade was a big win. The Knicks won't be happy with OG's deal in 2-3 years.
The Agbaji trade was a steal. Shedding Dennis' salary was a win.
More moves coming. End result should be a much improved team going forward.

Giannis wouldn’t let him get more than 15-18 ppg. Come on guys. Yes he’s good but he wasn’t going to get any better or take us very far in the playoffs. He’s not your 1A and you don’t want the ball in his hands at the end of a game. Doesn’t hit free throws, can’t shoot 3’s into the ocean, doesn’t have a clutch gene. He just doesn’t.
He was with the team for 7-8 years. That’s enough time to prove himself.

Comparing Pascal to Wilt over 2 game span is such lazy reporting and so meaningless. These 2 reporters clearly don't like Masai. Sportsnet needs to hire people who actually know basketball and put actual effort into reporting it, especially when it comes to Josh Leweberg

LMAO, insiders. Win. Won't win with Siakam as #1. OG too expensive and wanted to move to NYC. Timing off, and Masai and others gave them a chance this year to see if they could compete. Decided no and 1/3 into season decided reset with 22-23 year olds. Get with it, timing showed Masai loyalty. Don't be surprised to see offers for PS and OG when they are UFA's.

Facts are facts for what ever Reason they share thier views.. The question is .. are they wrong or do they make Valid points. We went from a Chip in 2019 to missing the playoffs 3 out of the last 5 years.. do the Math.. this is negligence as Clear as day... on Masai and Bobbies watch. The Media has been too kind to those at the top like Masai and Bobby.

To call it negligence is quite over the top.
Post chip we were very competitive.
Then tampa, where we got Scottie.
We used Fred and Pascal until Scottie was ready.
Now we have IQ and rj.
Make what ever narrative you want, the raptors were not negligent. Pascal is a legit player and was worth investing in at the time.
