    Looking good Shaun. Your plants are fine with chilli's on this early(my jalepeno has been routinley topped every other day and has around 50 peppers on) aslong as you have the energy they will grow still aswell as produce fruit. Most farmers will aim to have heavy set flowers / chilli's on now by round the 2 foot height for an early picking anyway. Greenhouse is looking 👌

    Really love the new greenhouses! I'm quite jealous! I only have one small greenhouse with 30 plants. But I recently installed an irrigation system. How often do you water? And for how long? And when do you start feeding your chilliplants?

    • @ChilliChump
      @ChilliChump  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Colin, thank you. My first growing space, I think I had about 10 plants in a little plastic temporary greenhouse, have a look at the first video on my channel!
      With regards to watering schedule. it isn't as simple as that unfortunately. I could go 10 days without watering, or I could be watering each day. It stabilises a little later in the season with more consistent temperatures and sunshine. This is why I built the automation. I have been optimising the algorithm for many years now. I will be providing this functionality through SeedsIO for people that want to do it too.
      But to put it simply, you want to water only when you plants start to show some drooping.
      With regards to feeding, that will only happen 4 to 6 weeks after final pots, but that is only valid if you are using my soil mix recipe that I share in previous videos.

      Personally, I would probably put them in fresh soil. Rinse off the roots, and the plant well. Then pot up into a fresh soil mix.

  • @ldzmn
    @ldzmn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi @ChilliChump just wondering what temperature do you try to maintain in your greenhouses for the mixture of plants you have? (daytime / night time Celsius). I lost a lot of mine last year due to heat and overwaterering (soil mix wasn't free draining enough). I've adjusted my soil mix but am now very conscious of temperatures. Thanks again for another great vid btw. Helps so much being able to compare what stage you are in during your growing season.

  • @mattstalford4032
    @mattstalford4032 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Curious why you don’t mulch the pepper plants in their pots, I noticed a lot of the potted plants’ soil is very dry. The exposure from the sun kills very beneficial microbiology in the soil, I’ve noticed my plants’ health have been far superior since mulching with either wood chips or straw. All organic and natural. The only way to do it.

    • @ChilliChump
      @ChilliChump  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I want my soil to drain and dry in between watering, as quickly as they can. That is key to the growth I get. The soil microbiology is fully intact below the surface where there is still a level of moisture/humidity enough for them.

    Great video - your production values are out of control!
    Also wanted to drop in and say your instinct about maybe taking the fruit off the Spanish Giant is the right one! I grew it last year and the fruits are absurdly large. They take away energy from plant growth for several months as they take aaaages to ripen. I’m going to let my plants get to at least the size of their own 10l pot before I let any fruits set.

  • @davidgoen2295
    @davidgoen2295 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video and update. A few questions for you.
    1. I always heard that tomatillos need at least 2 different plants next to each to produce. I assume for pollination needs. Have you heard this?
    2. In researching creating manual crosses, it's often suggested to grow out as many plants possible to have many options of bio diversity to properly choose phenos and stabilize over time. It's one of the reasons I am hesitant to get Into crossing because of the space needed to do it "properly". Do you have thoughts about this?
    2a. What species is your new cross? Baccatum x fructescens?
    3. Those pots you are using don't look overly large. Approximately how big are they? I kinda get the impression from most growers 5 gallons or more is ideal. I grew peppers in several sized pots last year from 5 gallons down to 1.5 gallons and it really does make a difference being in larger pots.

    • @ChilliChump
      @ChilliChump  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. My first year growing tomatillos, but I've heard that from a few folks now. I have a few of the plants, so should be alright. They don't appear to self pollinate easily.
      2. Yes, you need to grow out many of them. I started around 45 plants before selecting this one to continue with. For the first generation it took around 50 to 60 seeds to get just one to germinate. These two species don't cross easily (yes, frutescens X baccatum). You can see the videos where I show the progress of this plant...as well as how to do your own crosses, where I started this one. It's on my channel.
      3. The pot sizes combined with my methods, produce a nearly optimal plant and pod production. Remember, this is my business, so I need to optimise the entire process and get the biggest yields.
      If you had a longer season than I do, then a larger pot would do great. Have a look at my 2018 and 2019 season, you can see how big my plants get.

    Hello ChillIChump. You really want a nice installation and beautiful plants. But if I allow you, I will ask you to send a plant for organic phosphorus, which means that the farmer and the developers of the crops and large branches and other branches of the fruit are growing and will give you news. For example, the GHE Terra aquatica organic plant blooms that are very good for 3 assemblies. This is because it is very humble that you have not to regret it. Good continuation ChiiliChump 👍

      That would be my suggesting. Once the Marigolds are properly established they should hopefully be able to outgrow the slug damage...also when they are older, the stems are more hardy.

    • @ChilliChump

      I start with between 50 and 60 of them each generation. Then I keep only the one that I want from those that has the qualities I want. This is the one I kept. I will be sending seeds to some Patreons in future generations to get a bigger diversity, but I am tightly controlling early generations to get the plant I am aiming for. Later generations, I will be giving seeds away to the community, like I promised on my livestreams.

    I grew around 15 seeds to seedlings and 3 survived. I gave one away, and my dog dug up one of the two I had left. I believe the one lone survivor is a seven pot Trinidad red habanero plant. Can someone please tell me that this pepper is a good one to grow? Like maybe one pepper and for tomatoes for salsa, or too hot for practical use?

    • @ChilliChump
      @ChilliChump  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Likely the same situation I am in with my seed store. Sending seeds outside of the country has a small risk of being stopped by customs. This is clearly stated on both our websites. However people don't really read those things, so there ends up being some unhappy people asking for refunds, or even worse, people taking advantage of the situation saying they haven't received their seeds even though they have. So the easier option is just to stop shipping to those countries. I haven't yet made that decision on chillichumpseeds.com. Will see how it goes.

    Your link to the seedsio site has a ; instead of : and is broken because of this.
    That being said, it would be very interesting (at least for me, a little nerd) to know more about the backend stuff or at least a bit more technical video about this application :)

    • @ChilliChump
      @ChilliChump  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that. I have changed the link!
      I have made a series of videos showing how to use the platform. And I do share some of the backend info on discord with my Patreons. It is a proprietary system I have built so it won't be going open source for now, especially until I have finished the IOT module

      The Ghost Peppers (Bhut Jolokia) are slow growers initially. So they can very easily be overwatered. Even if it seems dry near the surface, the bottom of the soil could easily still be very wet. They like to have dry roots in-between watering. Try waiting until the plant starts to droop a little before watering.

      I wanted to create a challenging cross, baccatum x frutescens. They don't readily cross.
      Also I wanted some of the qualities of each to come toegether. Both are strong plants, prolific and productive; the colours are great (bright red and bright yellow); the lemon drop is also a little more bug resistant in my experience.
