Hello! Thank you for the question. We generally tag our sheep when we dock tails. It’s easier for us to do this all at the same time since tail docking, ear tagging, and castration all require tetanus antitoxin. So, we tag at about 7 days old. A good rule of thumb to remember is, if you’re creating a wound, make sure you give tetanus antitoxin to the lambs/kids. With that being said, if you tag one day and castrate the next, don’t give tetanus antitoxin again. Hopefully that makes sense. If we purchase mature animals that aren’t tagged, we tag them. I would advise tagging everything you have. You should be keeping health records on all your animals and it becomes extremely difficult to keep track of them if you don’t. For your really expensive livestock, you may want to consider tattooing as well. Tags can be cut and replaced easily.... just something to think about. You can purchase pre-made tags specifically for your farm. There are a few sites that offer them. We purchase our tags from Premier1

After tagging any medicine should be use for reduce pain and inflammation.
Generally we do not. If you are concerned about this, we would advise you to contact your vet for a prescription medication such as banamine.
