🔰 I’m sorry, I find this to be an immature video in terms of its uselessness. There’s more to upgrading a server OS, especially a production server. Many times, fraught with driver and services issues among other things. This video has no substance in those terms, nor speaks to licensing variables, applications affected, down time, etc...

When I upgraded from 2012 R2 to 2019, it did not allow me to keep my files. I read elsewhere that to do a migration, you have to upgrade from 2012 R2 to 2016, then 2019. So unfortunately, this video is misleading.

On the Microsoft website documentation it confirms what the video is saying. Why did you have issues? Are you sure you had 2012 R2 and not 2012?

We're running 2012 R2 currently, and I have imaged that system and have restored it to a "TEST" box. I downloaded from MS 2019 ISO, and have mounted it. When ever I try to run the setup file, it runs, and when it gets to 4:48 shown here, the top radio button is not available for me to click. I get a message, "Your files, apps, and settings can't be kept because your installing an edition that's different than the one your currently using." I'm totally lost on this statement, and why I'm seeing it. I thought I would test the upgrade on a "TEST" box to see how the apps run afterwards. I can't get to that point. Any thoughts?

Hi Phillip, check out this doc from Microsoft: docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/upgrade/upgrade-2012r2-to-2019
Also, check the logs and see if a specific error that came up and troubleshoot that code. Sometimes it's a setting to bypass old configs that tend to block these updates. Hope that helps!

@@cbtnuggets Thanks. I found out from talking with a Dell Software Engineer, that you can't upgrade using a Eval Copy from MS which is what I was testing with. I hate to buy it, and not be 100% sure, our apps will follow along to the upgrade. Thanks for you time.

@@pfiltz Good to know. I'm just hitting the same issue.

@@djunleash I found a way to migrate apps over to a new OS. I can't remember the software that I've tested, but if you like I'll post it here tomorrow. It's pretty slick software. You load it up on both the source and target. You can select what you want copied over. You may have to "tweak" the target once it's done, but it worked great in my testing.

I've seen a video and read a blog post mentioning they were able to in-place upgrade Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2022.

What do you think about that?
