Buddy this video made me think of the perfect topic for a documentary: the USS Laffey, the destroyer that took on 50 kamikazes at once! War Thunder could help you with the videos and best of all the destroyer itself is still with us. I believe it’s moored in South Carolina. Check it out!
Considering an old, outdated biplne set the Bismark up for it's sinking, I'm not overly surprised one managed to sink a destroyer, powerful or otherwise.
Remember, a very slow plane was *NOT* what ship defenses expected back in those days. That's why the Fairey Swordfish was so dangerous, because its slow speed made it actually difficult to shoot down from ship AA fire.
Historical notes - First, this attack actually happened just past midnight. But I had to make it in the late evening in the recreation, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see anything! Also, the USS Callaghan also had a camo paint scheme I believe, but I was unable to get that specific livery for this video. But other than that, it should be accurate :) Please consider supporting me by grabbing something from the TJ3 History store! TJ3History.shop
Fun fact: These K5Ys would see their last combat use in the Dutch East Indies after the war by the newly formed Republic of Indonesia where they would use them against the Dutch in the way the Night Witches did.
Fancy having to fly a slow-moving wooden plane towards enemy ships bristling with AA guns, knowing that the chances are you will never get there, and also knowing if you do get there that you are going to die anyway. Crazy.
The Fairey Swordfish “Stringbag” was an amazing plane. Biplane. It was the front line torpedo bomber for the UK for the entire war. They attacked the Bismarck in numbers. And they raided Taranto, Italy’s main naval base, sinking Battleships there, setting the example the Japanese copied for their attack on Pearl Harbor. And they did it with hardly any losses. In both cases they made it back to their carriers and the carriers made their way out of harm’s way. The book, “To War In A Stringbag” is an excellent resource.

On July 30th 1945 USS CASSIN YOUNG was struck by another of the biplane kamikaze off the coast of Okinawa. In that attack 22 sailors lost their lives, one of those was my uncle JV ‘Dale’ Cleveland signalman 1st class.
During that time period on April 16th 1945, an old friend of mine was aboard the Fletcher class USS Pringle. They shot down 2 Kamikazes but a 3rd hit them amid ship. The Pringle broke in two and sank in 6 minutes. 69 were killed and 268 survived. My friend Gene Benjamin was one of the survivors and was rescued.
I recall reading that the time period an attacking Kamikaze was within range of the target ship’s guns was 20 seconds. That explains how some got through.
Being made of wood and fabric it was almost invisible to radar so it was not obsolete. The British had their Mosquito and also the Germans had something similar. Also Germany's allies had aircraft of wooden construction. The Russians had modern fighter squadrons equipped with front line airplanes made out of plastic.

The Engine was almost totally burned up and gummed up from using a Crude Pine 🌲 Root Derived Turpentine for Fuel. You're mistaken on saying the Japanese were running out of planes. They had over 12,000 planes left when they surrendered. Before the surrender they were still producing planes. What they were running out of were experienced pilots. So pilots were given enough training to fly to a target and crash into it. They used old biplanes knowing if they mixed them with monoplanes. The ships would be more occupied with the faster monoplanes in a Kamikaze attack.
