  • Hey folks,
    this is the first proper Episode of the "Hardware"-Chapter.
    We will explore the telescope mount: the foundation of everything that will come. Core message: Whatever you are up to. Take the Mount and in the same instance the Tripod into consideration from the first moment on. You don't want a 30kg tripod on your field trips and you don't want a shaky under-performer within your observatory.
    Clear skies!

    Finally someone talking specifically about tripods not just mounts.

      Plans are hot for restarting this second chapter soon. Any suggestions? Cheers 🎉

      @@catchingphotons I would love to see a comparison on stability and vibration dampness of Wooden/Aluminium/CF/Steel. Same Scope/Mount/Same Magnification . The Carbon Fiber tripods are relatively new for Astro use so whether it can damp as well as wood, I have not seen a proper comparison done.

    As always, crisp and to the point. I made the mistake of buying a cheap tripod to "save" money. Ended up spending more in the long run in buying another tripod. Like Thomas commented, “buy nice or buy twice“ :D

    Also have a low cost aluminium lightweight tripod that weighs a few hundred grams less than a kg, I just hang some bags of rice to add weight in it and is now feels like a totally different tripod.

      Haha :-) There are as many tripods out there as there are telescopes. Scroll through them but keep "weight, max-load, movability" and such in mind. A sturdy tripod won't be portable, the "allrounder" not performing well on every field and so on.... my sturdy tripod is heavy as **'+#+** but nevertheless it's sturidy :-)
      Cheers!

    Are there videos missing from the tutorials #2 playlist? We go from video 2.0 to 2.9.2 to 2.1. That seems wrong somehow.

      Hey! Nothing wrong - I'm quite busy in "day-life" and try to keep up the pace as good as possible. Sometimes I get the opportunity to shoot another episode that is slightly ahead (because I got the opportunity to lay hands on both cameras) and then I upload it anyway and will fill the missing gap as soon as possible =)

    I have a tripod with hollow center column. There is no screw to attach a camera or mount to. What is the missing part I need?

    • @catchingphotons
      @catchingphotons  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello!
      The screw size you'll need largely depends on the specific female screw adapter of your mount. In my case, the adapter is M12, which is why I opted for that screw size. To ensure a secure fit, I recommend attaching the screw to a plastic adapter head, which will provide better grip, and using a washer (Zwischenlegescheibe) to achieve a tight fit. If these components are not included with your mount, you may need to retrofit them to securely attach your scope.
      Wishing you clear skies!

      @@catchingphotons Hello,
      Thank you for the very thorough reply. That is all helpful information. You are correct regarding retrofitting! I am having someone 3d print me a component that will fit in the hollow column as a sort of adapter or plug which has the screw protruding from the top side, so as to attach mounts etc.

    Telescope tripod not available in my city. Will phone tripod works for telescope? Because it's easy to buy.

    • @catchingphotons
      @catchingphotons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tripods are an essential part of your setup. A shaky tripod will result in all sorts of trouble.
      Do you want to do visual astronomy or Astrophotography? What kind of scope/ setup are you planning to build?

      @@catchingphotons I have 1300mm + focal length telescope with 4inch dia aperture . Viewing planets without tripod is very difficult. I don't have any tripod to test. Will camera or phone tripod works for it?

    • @catchingphotons
      @catchingphotons  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using a scope without a tripod is not recommended :-)
      1300mm is considered a long focal length scope. To use those scopes best you are advised to use a solid tripod and mount. Anything else will give you serious trouble.
      Camera tripods are normally way too weak... Of course it depends on the tripod. But maybe you Google solid telescope mounts (at least EQ3 Pro from Skywatcher) and compare them with what's available at your location.
      Clear skies!!

      @@catchingphotons Thanks for replying. EQ3 pro is not available in my location but I now understand what exactly I need to look for when buying tripod.
