    This sounds like a pretty accurate review. When I did the James Patterson class, it felt more like I was listening to funny anecdotes rather than getting practical advice on writing. It's more like attending a class on theory rather than, "Okay, this is the subject, the verb, and the direct object. How can we make this sentence more exciting?"
    I'm hesitant to buy another class because I am not into theory. I'm into practical. I'm into seeing examples as to how the author came up with their sentence or how they went into problem solving a particular obstacle. Neil Gaiman's class could be very interesting and I'm curious about R.L. Stein's class too and Dan Brown. $90-$180 isn't a lot of money, but I also don't want to waste it frivolously on conjecture.

    • @Kindlepreneur
      @Kindlepreneur  5 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      Yup - that was my feeling too. But the comments actually helped with this. Specifically, like I mentioned in the video, the DeadMau5 one he kept talking about the art and putting some things together, but it wasn't until the comments that I found the necessary links to equipment and software, and discussion between users about the patches and things he used.
      R.L. Stein's wasn't practical in that respect (although more practical than James Patterson's). But it was a bit more into how he came up with ideas. I'm excited about Neil's because he specifically said that the course is about the 'art of storytelling.' I feel like I'll be good if that just stays strategic....but we'll see.
      Again, if you're looking for a game changing particular course, I don't really think this takes the cake. But using it to replace Netflix and explore topics I wouldn't normally have invested time but have interest in (Space exploration, Wine tasting, Shultz of Starbucks talking about building a business with value, etc) then yes. And again, its like icing on the cake for writers...but not the cake.

      Definitely! I once heard a quote from someone that said something along the lines of “if the thought of buying a book that you are really interested in really catches your attention, don’t think twice and buy it” It’s a low risk, high reward investment. As this relates to MasterClass, if even just one piece of perspective changing, eye opening, & thought provoking information is extracted from either a book or these masterclasses or anything you invest in to learn, the investment was worth it in the end. Just one piece of valuable information is all it takes to justify the investment, assuming your not spending ridiculous amounts of money, but even then, education is the most valuable thing you can invest in, & so I’d gladly spend a fortune if it means expanding my mind, as well as any other facet of my life.

      I agree. You'd love to have friends like these. I think they're quite generous in trying to put what they know into words. It may not be as thoughtful and structured as a book or a real class, but it's genuine and you can read their faces and know that they're into it.

      The question is this: does Master Class bring you to "mastery"? Do you become a skilled writer? A famous architect? A successful filmmaker? The answer is simply no, you don't. Because nobody can teach geniality, you either have it or don't. That's why Master Class deceives the audiences through their ads on youtube; they promise something they can't keep. Probably not really worth to discuss about it, but the ad about the architecture class got me really mad: it was just pure deceitful strategy.

    • @hilmir
      @hilmir 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@amoreazione3563 noone can bring you up to the level of mastery, except yourself. even if you have a live-in agreement or apprenticeship with your favourite author, chef, actor, whatever, it still wont guarantee you will attain their level of mastery.
      this is pretty common sense, they are just showing you the valuable first steps towards starting your own path.
      ultimately, you dont want THEIR mastery, you dont want to copy, you want to build your OWN. and that is work YOU have to do.
      no course, program or structure does that for you and if you are honestly in the pursuit of knowledge, you dont want that for yourself either.
      to suggest otherwise is ludicrous and unrealistic. as they say, it is not about the destination, but the journey.

  • @MichaelCantwell

    I took several courses. I took even a minor point from each one, however for writer's classes, I found Dan Brown's to be the best by far. Patterson was more listening to his ego, though I did take a couple of things from it. I agree with the Gladwell one, I couldn't get through it. The RL Stine and Mamet one's were good as well, in their own way. I agree that each one is a bit different. However, for nuts and bolts of writing, the Dan Brown class to me was the best with RL Stine being next. I got little out of the photography classes. I'm trying to get through the chess class. I agree that for the price, if you actually watch them, it's a bargain. However, you really do have to take the class or its a waste. The poker one is pretty good too. I started the guitar ones, and found even those are very different from each other. Again, if you asked me if I would pay again, yes I would.

    • @Kindlepreneur
      @Kindlepreneur  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I completely agree with this - ranking them its Dan Brown, and then I'd add Neil Gaimon second, and RL Stine 3rd. Well put on the Patterson one...agreed. As a nonfiction writer, I did like Gladwell's though but didn't walk away with specifics to use...just a better appreciation for teaching through writing.

      @@hilmir I thought Margaret Atwood's was pretty good. I didn't see the other one you mentioned. Instead of a number of words or pages, think in terms of writing scenes. Write the scene that's in your head. It doesn't matter if it's 100 words or 3,000. Get it down and move to the next scene. Someone gave me that advice long ago and I found it pretty useful.

    For those searching for help on writing a book, Stephen King's 'On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft' is excellent. 2 others I would add is Chuck Palahniuk's 'Consider This' and Steven Pinker's 'The Sense Of Style'.
    As an aside, I don't think the Office Hours feature exists anymore.
    Lastly, I've been watching MasterClass for awhile (Aaron Sorkin, Judy Blume, Steve Martin) and honestly I feel like 80% of the value is that the talks get you super pumped. They make you feel that you can really achieve your goals if you do the work, and for that I'd say they are worth they money.

    Paying for a year of unlimited is worth it if you plan on watching or listening to the classes. New classes are also added regularly. The subjects include, business, wedding design (I’m taking that now), wine tasting, cooking, applying your makeup for every occasion, photography, comedy, meditation, and the list goes on. I started using it daily while I work and then stopped but I’m back on it. I recommend listening in the car, before bed, while you’re at work, or cleaning and knock as many as you can out in a year. It does help you grow and something I’d recommend to high schools ❤ Happy Holidays everyone.

      I know right! I made a master class account and watched the trailer of David Mamet's class and the trailer was really cool but then every TH-cam video I clicked on the same ad came and after a while it stops being cool and just becomes really annoying. I finally went to Google preferred ads and blocked all personalised ads. Thank God I'm not haunted by masterclass ads anymore. Not even kidding but Everytime I hear masterclass has added a new class, I go incognito and then see the trailer (tbh their trailers are really cool - but only their trailers are cool. I took James Patterson's class and it wasn't useful at all there was nothing of substance that can really help an aspiring writer). Advertisers have to learn that barraging us with ads will not make us finally give in and buy the product but instead will make us hate the product and not buy it all - a complete opposite reaction to their expectations. Currently I'm being haunted by mindvalley's stupid ads about "energy healing"

    I just got it Sunday. It's Tuesday now. I love it so far. I've watched Samuel L. Jackson, David Lynch, Timbaland (the only one I've finished thus far), Hans Zimmer, Herbie Hancock, and Steve Martin.
    I'm most impressed by the celebrity instructor's authenticity. Imagine if you were a celebrity in something, and you were giving a course. Would you be generous with your philosophies? Probably. And they do. I finished Timbaland's because of the amount of joy he has for his craft. Steve Martin concedes right off the bat that he had no talent. Herbie Hancock knows everything about music, but says that while that's great and helpful, it's not everything.
    It's really inspiring. It's very much like the kind of friends you want to have, because they've done well and they're happy to share.
    I've wanted this for a long time, so when my wife said she was interested we had to do the 2 for 1 deal. They have a Roku channel, so it's super easy to watch on tv.

    I agree with this review and many of the comments. I have the annual subscription, and have been through a couple of the classes, primarily the music oriented ones. I find the content is more entertainment than instructional. The teachers share opinions, anecdotes, stories, etc., but, at least in the ones I e seen, don’t offer much in teaching any particular, tangible skill. I feel like I came away with a sense of the teachers perspective, but didn’t come away having learned how to do anything new. So, for me, the classes provide value from an entertainment and maybe motivational standpoint, but not so much from an instructional or skills building one. Probably worth the money paid, but the time may be better spent working on your craft rather than being entertained by someone that’s already mastered the craft.

      @@memorylane3457 Excuse me, what's the point of accessing every class? You will just disperse your interest down a dozen different streams, waste your time and go nowhere. Try and learn something you are really passionate about, one thing that you are obsessed with, and devote your energies to that. It should be something related to your life or that you can apply in your daily life. To join a Master Class for, say, chess and another one for musical production, one for acting and one for filmmaking is just pure nonsense.

      @@amoreazione3563 agree partially with your reply. i think most people have varied interests, and while this is a resource to tap on to core interests, it can also expand a person's secondary interest, which might even be something they can apply in their everyday life, like cooking or making original simple music for their videos. etc.
      and then there is human curiousity. that has no limits and can never be fully tapped, you never know what you will learn from randomly exploring the masterclass lessons.
      there are two groups, people who genuinely love knowledge, and people who see knowledge as a stepping stone towards results.
      for the latter group, i would say Knowledge is a great compass, but you still need to walk the road to get to where you want to go!

      By itself...eh. His was more theoretical and not a step by step. It was like having a scotch with Hans as he talks about his music, and what motivates him and inspires his creations.

      I enjoyed it - especially after seeing the Irishman. However, I didn't walk away with a practical peice of knowledge that would change the way I would do filming (which I don't - except for TH-cam I guess). Instead though, I have a DEEPER appreciation for some of his angles and storytelling and a better perspective of what and why he did what he did. It's a much higher level talk about his art - not a turn around a recreate type.
