    Interesting! I am an avid shotgunner and don’t own an over and under nor have I ever had a desire to own own one but I never would’ve guessed that. Great video!

    I’ve never had an over and under but that certainly makes sense the way you explained and demonstrated.

    Great explanation! I always put my wider choke on the bottom barrel and the tighter one up top. Only O/U I own is a Citori 725 Pro Sport that I use solely for Sporting Clays. I’d love to get a nice pheasant gun though. I had an old SKB made Weatherby Orion Grade III with gold inlays but it kicked like hell. I’ve gone through quite a few benelli’s and a Beretta or two

    I'm not a shotguner and don't even own an O/U but that was my guess and reasoning before I watched the vid. Nice to have my thinking supported.

    Good info DDO! You are absolutely correct! My long time Nabor a retired attorney who was also a pro shotgunner said the same thing about which barrel! Love your chanel! I have been into hunting and gun collecting for about 60 years now and you are always bring out points that I know but have completely forgotten about!

    When I had an O/U I always shot the bottom barrel first. Never had a reason, I do now though. Thank you for the info.
    Also on a side note. I watched you video on slings and purchased the Montana Sling. This is now favorite will go on all my rifles
    Thank you

  • @billfisher6708
    @billfisher6708 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very true, DD. I was taught the same about 40 years ago and typically you want the more open choke in the bottom barrel because that will be your closer shot.

    • @marc-andrebedard6033
      @marc-andrebedard6033 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, and since the bottom barrel is more offset from the rail, the wider patern produced by the more open choke compensates for this offset

    • @davidcudlip6587
      @davidcudlip6587 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of trap over/ under shotgun have barrels that are regulated. The bottom barrel could be slightly angled upward to shoot the same point of impact as the top barrel at a certain distance . 35 to 40 yards out.@@marc-andrebedard6033

    I wonder why manufacturers even have a selector. I have been told it is there to be able to switch to the different choke if you have one but I do not believe anyone (except for Flash) would have the time to do this in a hunting situation.

  • @duke1006
    @duke1006 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice Video explaining the practical Advantages of firing the bottom Barrel first but theres also a mechanical Advantage. Firing the bottom Barrel puts less Stress on the Action of an o/u compared to the top Barrel (thats also one of the reasons why in Combination guns/Drillings the Riflebarrel is almost always in the bottom despite it drastically increasing scope/bore Offset) and because statistically you will fire one Shot (the bottom Barrel) more often than two shots ( bottom then top) firing the bottom first can help make your Shotgun action last longer especially if youre shooting alot (with low Shell counts it probably doesnt matter).

    I can tell you on my side-by-side 10 gauge the left barrel is the one you wanna fire first if you want to hit anything….lol. The right barrel blows the pattern after 15 yards

  • @davidcudlip6587
    @davidcudlip6587 ปีที่แล้ว

    Back in the day of fixed choke barrels the bottom barrel was always the more open choked barrel. Meant to be shot first. Side by side guns had the right barrels choked more open. . And the front triggers on double trigger guns shot the under barrel first, or the right barrel first. The whole double barrel system was set up to shoot the open barrel first. Which only makes sense when hunting.

    If you didn’t have a selector switch you’d get the bottom barrel first anyway. It’s the right barrel in a SXS w/out a selector.

  • @paulharding1621

    Perfect reasoning DD. My preference when I used to shoot mostly driven pheasant here in the UK using a fixed choke Winchester Grand European 12 gauge was top barrel first because of the modified choke then second shot using the improved cylinder bottom barrel as the birds got closer.

    • @desertdogoutdoors1113
      @desertdogoutdoors1113  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the USA, our birds are
      flushing away 99% of the time. If I did a UK style Pheasant hunt, I'd definitely switch chokes.

  • @davidkang6663
    @davidkang6663 ปีที่แล้ว

    I set my Browning O/U for the bottom to shoot 1st. for reason being my gun is fixed IMod lower and full upper for upland birds that flush and fly away, but when I hunt birds that fly towards you like ducks, geese and doves then I switch to the full choke to shoot 1st.

    Clays shooting I always use two different chokes. So if I'm using a IC/MOD. I put the IC in the bottom barrel, MOD on top. However, sometimes the 1st clay that flys may be further out and I'll shoot my top barrel (MOD) first.

    Missed an opportunity to discuss choke selection per barrel to match selection of bottom barrel first shooting. Consider that for a quick follow-up advice podcast.

    This is the same reason I carry a .357 under the hammer in my carry revolver, with .38 in the other four chambers. Recoil doesn't matter on the last shot.

    One of the first deer I shot. Was with my grandpa's double barrel. I fired both barrels on my grandpa's double barrel. That double trigger don't do well with lefties.

    • @christinamoneyhan5688
      @christinamoneyhan5688 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should have been taught to use only one finger for the trigger group. Just because it has two triggers doesn’t mean it was supposed to have both barrels fired at the same moment. You are not the only one to do such a thing.

      That might depend on whether the shooter is right or left handed as the gun will torque slightly to the left or right. My best guess would be to shoot the "inboard" barrel first (left barrel for RH shooter).

    what about chokes? is it then the convention for the gun makers to equip the bottom barrel with the improved choke (or no choke) knowing you’re going to fire that barrel at a target closer to you?
