The development of Thimphu city started with the establishment of the capital in 1961. Prior to that, Thimphu was asmall town with only a few hundred homes. The government initiated a plan to develop the city and improve the living conditions of its residents.
One of the earliest developments in Thimphu was the construction of the Tashichho Dzong,which served as the seat of administrative power and the residence of the King. The construction of the dzong was completed in 1969, and it has since become an iconic landmark of the city.
Another major development in Thimphu was the establishment of the National Memorial Chorten in 1974, which was built in honor of the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The chorten is a popular pilgrimage site for both locals and tourists.
Over the years, Thimphu has experienced rapid urbanization, with the population growing from around 5,000 in the 1960s to over 100,000 today. As the city has grown, so too has the demand for infrastructure and services. The government has invested heavily in developing roads, bridges, and public transport systems to meet the needs of the growing population.
Today, Thimphu is a bustling city with modern amenities, including shopping malls, cinemas, and restaurants. However, the city has also managed to retain its traditional charm, with many of its historic sites and cultural traditions still intact. Overall, the development of Thimphu has been a balance of modernization and preservation of Bhutanese culture and values.
