    Season 4 Episode 3 "97 Seconds"
    The final ten fellowship candidates compete ferociously against each other when House splits them into two teams by gender. They are assigned to diagnose and treat a wheelchair user (Brian Klugman) with spinal muscular atrophy who is slowly suffocating. As the teams try to outdo the other, complications arise. Meanwhile, Foreman runs his own team at another hospital, and resorts to using a very "House-like" treatment to help a patient.

      You'll notice I said controversial rather than right/wrong.
      If you reduce the sentence, it implies that saving her life was not the right thing to do. That even if they didn't find supporting evidence of a diagnosis until the autopsy, he shouldn't have acted on a hunch alone. That's what makes it controversial. It basically comes down to "Do the ends justify the means?" and your answer could arguably be yes or no. It's a gray area of moral quandary.

    • @jackcurtis9002
      @jackcurtis9002 5 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      I'd say this statement is just weirdly formulated semantically, and she ends up being misunderstood. By "doing the right thing", she meant "applying the appropriate method within the frame of medical rules". But Foreman learnt from House that you can take every shot ever if it's going to save the patient down the line.
      At the end of the day, it just comes down to the same dilemma we see in every American drama series: manicheism doesn't work. If you try to divide reality between right or wrong, you're going to implode. Both her vision of the truth and Foreman's are legitimate.

    I almost died. I went to a big hospital and they treated me like I was garbage. I came home to die. My sweet little dog curled up next to my stomach as I lay for months in the dark. She stayed there beside me, except to go out, eat and drink. I couldn't bare light. I was in hellish pain. She stayed. Other doctors didn't want to see me b/c after the fancy hospital I was clearly fine. Eventually, I was seen by a different doctor who did actual tests and sent me to have my eyes checked by someone who studies the brain and eyes (another part of the brain actually.) She found that my optic nerve was inflammed. MRI revealed lesions on the brain and antibodies had been high. Anyway, those other doctors almost killed me. They mocked me and ignored me but my little dog, well, she saved me. She made me hang on until I got help. I'd die for that dog. There is nothing better on earth than a loyal dog.

      I don't get this stereotype that smart people are atheists. Especially a man like that. A smart person should know everything is caused by something, and the existence of the universe is something. Am I meant to believe they assume nothing created the universe?
      If they believe that, it leaves but 2 options for them to branch their beliefs. Either the universe was made by gods or a god, or we were created as a simulation. We are not a simulation and there is a good explanation for that too. It leaves but one answer, and it isn't atheism.

Even if we went with your view that there is a creator or a deliberate agent which set all this into motion, why does that automatically mean our consciousness or ''soul'' survives on another plane after we die on this planet?
      Something might have caused the universe to come into being BUT seeing all the scientific facts that we know of such as age of the universe/earth, the deep vastness of empty space, the existence of dinosaurs, evolution, countless other animal species having all the same biological functions as us but they are not deemed worthy of having a soul or the right to an afterlife, etc...It would be highly arrogant to be looking up at the sky and thinking we will survive forever because we are so special. If ''God'' created us in his own image, the fact that dinosaurs roamed Earth for hundreds of millions of years before us seems a very tricky question to get around, wouldn't you say?

Hell the fact we aren't seeing earth beamed in half by some intergalactic death laser a minute after I post this is reason enough. I don't need to explain how perfect our conditions are on this planet and how slim the chances intelligent life would develop are.
      For our own importance relative to god, I believe the fact that it is impossible for us to comprehend our existence yet is the evidence we will inevitable ascend to a greater domain. In our human lives, we have but 5 senses We only comprehend the 3 x,y, and z dimensions. Our perception of time is linear in a straight line. There is so much we do not understand that I can accept but another 2 outcomes. A: We will understand everything someday and have no more questions, or B: My existence is worthless
      That is also why we are not in a simulation. A simulation's creator could not possibly place such restrictions on us like that, otherwise, it would be pointless for said simulation to continue.
      I don't know maybe our existence IS meaningless. Then I honestly don't care what happens to anything, but I still don't believe that and I still doubt we are here for no reason. Why can we imagine so much that we apparently would never possibly experience?
      Who said god made us just to be in his image and watch us? You know some people die of cancer at 0? That's honestly all the more evidence you could use to say there is life after death.

      @@unitedstates4912 You say "everything is caused by something" - surely you've heard the argument that "gods or a god" must have been caused by something too? And if you'll allow that deities can cause themselves or are uncaused, then why don't you afford that same property to the universe?
      You also say that "our existence naturally would be of such low chance that it is insane to believe we were not created by hand of some greater being" - yet miniscule chance is not zero chance, and the larger the universe and the longer it exists, the more likely it is that non-zero chance occurences are eventually going to happen. Eventually it becomes "insane" to believe that unlikely events *won't* eventually happen, given enough time and room to occur.
      The observation that "there is so much we do not understand" is the exact opposite of grounds to side with "gods or a god", especially when what we *do* understand from real experimentation points away from that. In all likelihood, we will never "understand everything someday and have no more questions" because the more we know, the more questions are raised about what we don't know. But that doesn't mean anyone's existence is worthless because there doesn't need to be a general meaning for all life for you to value your own specific life. You don't need permission to value your own life, you just do. If people didn't, humans wouldn't have lasted very long.
      It's very "United States" to be theist at the moment, but it's more "United States" to forge your own way in life regardless of what higher powers (like governments) want to impose on you. I hope you think on that one.

    One of the most underrated episodes ever. Lots of twists and turns. Just when you thought the women were right, they were wrong, and then right again but just didn’t watch the patient swallow the pills. House then puts a metal knife into an electrical socket and attempts to almost kill himself to prove there’s no afterlife. Then, there’s an interesting piece of irony. House and Thirteen kill a patient and his dog, but both are retained. However, Foreman saves a patient’s life with House’s same gutsy methodology and gets fired. It’s also at this episode where Foreman’s patient is experiencing the same symptoms as in “House Training”. In that episode, Foreman kills a patient and isn’t able to get past his guilt. He later resigns as a result. Claiming he doesn’t want to be like House, Foreman discovers he’s too late in this episode and despite rectifying his past guilt, is fired as a result of this.

    This episode always bothered me in that when 13 gave him the pills, she put them on the table to get the water for him but that table got moved while she was getting the water by two other members of the team. It was never her fault. It was the other team that caused this. House was ultimately to blame in the he had two teams competing over this case, and it cost the patient and his dog their lives.

    • @Dante02d12
      @Dante02d12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      I think everyone is to blame in this case.
      The patient should have said that he didn't get the pills.
      Thirteen literally forgot to finish her operation.
      The other team cared more about making their own tests than treating the patient.
      As for House, not only his employment game was dangerous for his patients and he knew it, but he also was careless because he knew the diagnostic, and even tried to experience the after-life instead of monitoring the game.
      And finally... the dog is also to blame. He's the one who took the pills, he's the one who killed his master and himself.
      I really blame everyone in this situation, even Cuddy for letting House do something as risky as this employment game.

      @godlessmath The patient is not an adult. He is a PARALYZED adult. Of course she needed to take care of him a bit more than the average Joe.
      As for the other team: remember they each had their own operation to do. It wasn't their responsibility to give the pills, it was 13's. They didn't even _know_ he had to take pills, or at least didn't know he didn't take them (since, again, 13 should have given them).

IF you're supposed to drop off your kid at the daycare, but left the kid in a hot car because the building down from the daycare was on fire and you got distracted and "forgot" your kid in the hot car, every word that comes out of your mouth after that will be a pathetic excuse. As a recently hired employee, Foreman most likely would have been within his probationary period, enabling the employer to terminate employment for cause, cause in this case being failure to follow established protocol (remember that "protocol" in a health-care setting equates to "rules, regulations or statutes" in other professions).

A practicing physician like House could never exist in any modern hospital because he would never pass his residency. Plus, Cutty EXPECTS to be sued because of House specifically? She budgets for them? That's malpractice right there.
      The medicine, however, is real. As I understand it, every case in each episode is taken from a medical journal write-up somewhere in the world. Just not every one taking place in New Jersey.

      A dog, like most animals, is both a weaker being and an animal. It's a tragedy a dog died or, any animal, when a higher force (humans) were the cause, because we're supposed to protect the weaker animals. Yet they are still animals, don't always think logical or predictable. A person dies they are a casualty because a lot of times (not all the times, no disrespect to innocent blood) the human himself was the cause of death. A dog bites a child, the child is at fault because the dog is still an animal, unpredictable and illogical.
      The "hyprocrisy" comes from wanting to protect weaker animals (in the sense that you could easily kill them) but also respecting that they are still animals and you don't always understand them when they act out of fear or illogical.

    • @Mans334
      @Mans334 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      With my logic its a known schizophrenic with aggressive tendencies that doctors know could boil up at any time and then letting that schizophrenic play with your child. That would be the correct example. Dogs may be rational, but no dog is evil when they are born. Circumstances and mishandling makes the attack things. Bulldogs for example can be very loving dogs yet they are always portrayed as this evil and aggressive dog. With your logic a good example would be someone that doesnt know how to drive a car driving a car and crashing and then blaming the car on the accident. (Someone that doesnt know how to handle what they're doing and doing something wrong, then having a bad consequence) Also with the last sentence you seem very superior and god-like to the dog, wanting to kill it when it doesnt behave the way you want it to behave, not allowing it to be its own animal but your toy that you discard when it doesnt work right.
      Also the example with the child is somewhat misleading because i'm assuming theres an adult nearby (as you should always supervise children playing with animals, for the exact reasons stated in the earlier comment) which is meant to have full control over the situation.
      To complete the comment, if you were a victim of crime, you'd prefer to shoot some random animal as redemption, but not pursue the actual criminal. (Not punishing the one that should be in full control over the situation at that moment, but some other party)

They go to a mental institution because they didn't know right or wrong. Like an animal. So yes, even in your example, that is logical.

      It was everyone’s fault, but house was the one to blame for most of it, if you watch the episode you’ll see 13 didn’t make sure the guy took the pills (her fault) because the men arrived to do a lot of tests on the patient, but the women didn’t informed anyone of their first diagnosis which was the right diagnosis, but all of it was because of the “competition”. Also house didnt care because he was distracted with the suicidal guy from the clinic, which ended up dying anyways...IMO cuddy was right, most of it was houses fault for treating the life of the guy like a game, putting his employees against each other and on top of it being distracted with something else instead of supervising the condition of HIS actual patient, he was the guys doctor after all, and he was irresponsible and not doing his job so it’s his fault

      At least it was targeting a parasite in this episode.

    “He shouldn’t be making a decision based on a lie!”
    I know he’s talking about religion, but this still applies to life. Some things you just don’t know about, yeah, but you should be confident in your life choices. Know the rewards and consequences before you decide. And don’t be stupid about it. Don’t cut corners, and learn from your mistakes.

    • @selderane
      @selderane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We lie without even knowing we lie. It's our nature. We're wired to seek confirmation and to be suspicious of out-group contradictions. The logic centers of our mind serve our emotions and will concoct rational-seeming excuses after the fact, and do everything in its power to defend them.
      Virtually all thinking is religious thinking.

    • @LoriWolfcat
      @LoriWolfcat 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin D. When it comes to hope maybe, but if you’re thinking about what steak to eat for dinner, that’s not religious. And definitely not when you’re thinking about sports or real storytelling. But I always have been thinking about how the heck religion can make it’s way into a story when, in stories, you don’t need a god.

    • @selderane
      @selderane 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LoriWolfcat Sure much of that is. What to eat? We often make poor choices but find rationalizations to make us feel better. "I had a bad day." "Just one more won't matter." and more. Or what if it's a food we're unfamiliar with and we turn it away? We used emotion to decide (because we couldn't know we wouldn't like it), and then we rationalize why we didn't want it after the fact, probably making minor things bigger than they really were.
      Sports? Um, yeah, very emotional thinking. Sports is tribal, tribal is emotional.
      Stories? We read stories because they make us feel. That's what sticks with us the most. How we felt going through that journey.
      The human language is emotion, and our thought are emotional, peppered with real logic and reason when we're lucky.

    As a former EMT who has seen people "cross the bridge" that was a REALLY good portrayal of slow cancerous death. That actor did a bang-up job. Of course, in real life there's not often a fluffy dog to cry and beautiful supermodel doctor by your side... but the way he grew weaker and could barely speak... that was pretty bang on.
    Also... I've seen (and my brother the Paramedic has also seen) old dying people shoot wide-awake for a brief moment of lucidity and say something like "Oh they're here! they're here for me!" or scream out a deceased loved one's name and reach out their hand to grab some invisible hand and then die. So maybe House is wrong afterall... who knows?

    House can do almost anything and Cuddy never gets really angry. Until House saves lives. But when he screws up she gets angry for real. She is not yelling or screaming but when she says: "You are responsible." it leaves even House speechless. This shows her true character.
