  • Let’s build some raised flower beds and do some vertical gardening!
We picked up some dog ear cedar fence pickets from Home Depot to construct our raised beds with. They were 6 feet in length. We used two on each longer side and cut the end pieces at 24” long. This meant we used 10 boards with a little left over. We used scrap wood that we had laying around to make the corner braces and attach the two longer boards to one another. We then screwed the 4 sides together and had a bed. Next, we filled them with a layer of sticks, leaves, and dirt from around our home. Followed this with a layer of compost (added benefit of owning chickens) and 3 bags of Miracle Grow dirt. I opted to plant climbing green beans in my bed on one side. Still have the other side of the bed for another vegetable.
Next, we put 4 metal T posts in the ground for each bed. We already had cucumbers planted in our garden and needed something for them to climb, thus the vertical garden. We put 2 posts by three new raised bed and 2 by the existing cucumber plants. We then used an 16’ cattle panel from Tractor Supply to arch over the garden and between the posts. This way, our cucumbers and new green beans can climb the panel. We secured the panel to the posts using zip ties. And that’s it! Super easy and affordable project.
