Superstar the final Australian cup was simply awesome. He just couldn’t get around the valley his lead up form was always spot on everyone knows he was good enough but for what ever reason he just couldn’t measure up in his attempts in the WS Cox Plate. Still a champion in my eyes and the most stunning looking black stallion.
keith gould yeah I honestly think he just didn’t go that flash @ the valley period .has tripped some good ones up over the years . It’s a real pressure race ,best of the best, in a pressure environment too really tricky course as well but all said he was an awesome horse gave some great thrills to many
A horse from this era that doesn’t get his dues and much of a mention was the wonderful Fields of Omagh had his injury set backs but won 2 Cox plates his longevity saw him up against horses like sunline the diva northerly El Segundo savabeel etc etc he was a cool horse
Yes ol fields form stamped northerleys by going on to win two cox plates and deny lonhro any,i was cheering him on as i remember the race caller (miles?)had a share and commented he only saw the backside of northerley.They were competitive,do you remember northerley trying to bite him in the running?

@@WorldHorseRacing god if youre going to do lonhro surely northerley deserves a piece as well,i am biased though as youve probably seen my posts but watch the 2002 cox and you'll see what i mean,northerley was unbeatable
@keith gould would have caned him,he was definitely better than sunline even keys admitted that the queen had met her match.lonhro had another chance without northerley in the cox and old fields towelled him up and even greg miles part owner and race caller stated northerley was far better.You cant claim lonhro wasn't a melb horse as he beat sunline granted in the Twilight of her career and won the Australian cup but against inferior fields to the past,the sydney form is astounding though dont count the handicap he was in that was just a warm up for carrying 8kgs over the winner in the mud and Sydney jockeys doin their best to box him in and bring him down but the ranvet and the bmw combined loss was half a head to two horses who generally wouldnt get near him,some say paddy didnt ride him well and theyre probably right especially freemason holding him out instead of sitting off him and probably regrets riding him that way,if you watch the last 300 youll see republic lass running sideways to keep up.In the ranvet just got out sprinted but gees republic lass had to throw everything at him,she was a good horse backed her many times.But in all i think fred mainly took him up there for the public and they were amazing races to watch youd have to admit
@keith gould remember also northerley was just 5yo when he first beat sunline then the following was stronger as a 6yo,sunline northerley so you think my top 3
@keith gould youre forgetting it took lonhro 2000mtrs to run down sunline and that was a good year and a bit when northerley beat her the first time coming home better,so by your logic she was past it then so what does it say about lonhro over a year later just pipping her?was she geriatric then,he wouldnt have caught her same age,mares do hold their constitution better than the geldings and stallions just look at haylist he was always having problems,mares just seem to have longevity.But yeah back to lonhro,all those nsw victories where against horse than werent the same class as northerley or sunline either or one of them would have won one,id rate defier a better performer and youd know this as im not a full bottle but what was defiers head to head with lonhro?
I miss Jack and Bob bringing their beautiful horse back to scale. The look on Jack's face, pure pride and joy. The black flash would have missed him I think

Compared to the real champs like sunline and northerley of his day he's what happy clapper is to winx,just not in the same league.all his victories over sunline were at her twilight years,sunline and northerley ran him off his legs in the cox plate finished near last

keith gould that’s very interesting looking back and there is definitely a pattern in that he wasn’t the best 5 in to a campaign great insight man.
