  • The start of a new series about the gear I actually own and use. This is about the lens which I have shot the most on my Leica SL2-S. I hope you enjoy.
    Cheers,

    Oli, I feel compelled to establish something from the outset, I am not an Oli groupie.😇 That said however, your videos have a sage maturity to them, a sort of jazzy vide that when spiced by the images you use to further punctuate your talking point - instantly make your channel - must watch TV. For what I look for and gauge WRT style and format - You my friend are one of the ‘Four Horsemen’ of TH-camrs that I enjoy listening to and more importantly; learning from. You. Mike Gray. Matt Osborne. And Ted Vieira. You four represent the Pied Pipers of Photography for me. And all of this because I saw this video today. Before Leica I’d never heard of the 75mm focal length. With Leica it has become my favorite focal length of all time. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, I gifted myself the Noct 75 1.25. Had this lens existed in the time of Michelangelo, it would have been the brush that he used to paint the Sistine Chapel. Fact. Yo man, continued happiness and success to you and yours. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps

      Chaps, my man. First of all, thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it and it's sentiments like that, which play a large part in my motivation to even make these videos. To you think of myself as one of the four horsemen of TH-camrs it's flattering and let's just leave it at that. In terms of the 75 mm focal length, like you I had never heard of it, until I shot Leica. It was when I needed to go beyond 50 that I started researching: "What are the possible portrait lenses for my M7?" And that's when I stumble across the 75 mm focal length, and I'm so glad I did. It is without a doubt, the perfect focal length for portraiture and this lens is my favourite of all time. I've never shot the Noct 75 1.25 can only imagine what a special lunch must be. Maybe at one point I will rent it out and shoot it for a few days, but I'm always wary of doing things like that because of my bank account. 🙂 I tried searching for your website, to potentially find photos that you had shot with it. But I cannot find your site. Please send it to me again. I would love to see your 75 mm noct shots.Take care and God Bless, Oli.

    Another terrific video, thank you! This is easily Mandler's best lens and the gem of Leica's time making lenses in Canada. That said, my favourite portrait lens on the M series has been the 50 'cron. Higher hit-rate for focus and much lighter.

    • @oliscurra
      @oliscurra  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've actually never shot the cron Nick. One day I will. I've heard it referred to as photographers favourite lens a lot.

    on my sl2s i love my 50 lux pre-asph for its non-clinical rendering. but i just discovered the 75 cron for portraits! what an amazing piece of glass!! but now you make my hands sweaty with that lux and these beautiful shots…! THANKS! ;)

    • @oliscurra
      @oliscurra  ปีที่แล้ว

      Never shot the cron myself. Based off what I've seen, it's really a question of modern look (cron) vs vintage look (lux). I can imagine though that the focus throw on the cron is a but more user friendly than the lux. WHich is basically a mile 🤣

    Would love a full review of this with more of your amazing images! I really enjoyed the 75mm focal length when I had a summarit but have since sold it. Oli, what makes you pick up this 75 vs your 50 noctilux? I currently have a 35 cron and 50 lux, and deciding whether to go the 75 or 90 for my tele.

    • @oliscurra
      @oliscurra  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Truth Be Told, it's really the character. I enjoyed the noctilux. It's a very special lens, more so for its aperture in combination with the modern look. But the truth is the character of the 75 mm summilux is unbeatable in my eyes. I prefer that imperfect old school look versus the more modern look. Especially on digital cameras. If I'm shooting film however, the modern look lens a very nice touch. I think the question for your tele option also has to do with the camera that you're shooting it on. The 75 mm will be easier to focus on a range finder than the 90 mm. Personally I have found the 75 mm to be a beautiful portrait focal length and would shoot it more than 90 mm focal length.

    My dream kit would be that 75 and my Nokton 40 mm 1.2 - I am actually buying the SL2s specifically for that Voigtlander 40. Backwards way to do it I guess but is what it is.

    • @oliscurra
      @oliscurra  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think it’s backwards at all, mate. The SL2-S is such an awesome camera to adapt lenses to I think it works. Did you ever end up getting it or are you holding out for the SL3?

      @@oliscurra no the Q3 finder upgrade put a pause on the sl2s. Thinking of updating my Q2 but only for the finder. Wish I could just update the finder LOL. That’s said I am actually renting the CanonR5 to go with the Nokton 50 1.0 because of the manual eye focus aid. If it works how I think it will, that will be my portrait rig. Love your vids and your portraits. There is a romantic born late thing going on with your work. Like an 80s/90s film dude who has jumped to now. You remind me of the good old days!

    Great video brother, I really enjoyed it…. I’ve had the 75MM Cron and loved it…. I always shy’d away from the Lux cause I thought it was too big but that was on M bodies at the time. I have the SL2s now so perhaps the combo works better size / weight wise….

      @@oliscurramy fav lens for portraits is the 50 SL Lux but if M lens only, I'd say the 75 noct was a beast when I owned it. Sadly, I let it go and miss it!

    Oil what do you think about the LUMIX S5IIX and the autofocus? I’ve predicted that the next iteration of the Leica SL2s will adopt the LUMIX autofocus…
    What do you think? I’d love to see #Panasonic send you this system so we can see the magic you can create with it.
    Keep shooting and keep showing us your process…
    You’re an inspiration, a teacher of light and life.
    Thanks for all you do… ❤

      @@oliscurra When I look back at old pictures the 0.95 noctilux is still my favourite. But so so heavy. Hardly use it any more.
      My go to lens is the summilux 1.4 50mm.
