The presentation will provide a brief history of the veterans treatment court movement in the United States. The presentation will also highlight some of the past research on volunteer peer mentors and current research gaps regarding their efficacy. Next, the study will detail how the presenter sought a qualitative analysis to capture the perspective of judges presiding over veterans treatment courts, to uncover how judges perceive volunteer peer mentors. Specifically, whether the judges perceive that volunteer peer mentors are effective in assisting justice-involved veterans complete the court program, communicate with the court, or assist in adherence to court-mandated treatment services. The presenter will compare the research findings with the initial theory and beliefs about utilizing peer mentors within veterans treatment courts, and discuss if the peer mentor feature is an important or necessary attribute of the court program. Finally, the presentation will provide recommendations for future studies and actions regarding using volunteer peer mentors within veterans treatment courts.
