  • The first touch-screen device I ever owned. It's small, its versatile and it sounds great even with a trashy second-hand midi controller (a Fatar Studio 1100 - was once very good).
A keeper. Roland, please create an app that emulates the PMA-5.

I wanted one of these so much in '95 or so, that I flew to Los Angeles to buy one for about half the price it was in Australia (well, sorta ... I bought it while I was on holidays in the USA at the time). I was in a real 'Sound Canvas' frame of mind, as I'd bought an SCC-1B sound card in '94... and ultimately grabbed a Virtual Sound Canvas as well. These days, these units are handy and as relevant as ever, with all the 'retro' fashions... particularly things like Synthwave and such... but I still really like the unit... and am glad I hung onto mine :)

Yep it's been my one keeper all these years. I've got an old PC in my shed, I've tried and tried to get it connected like my setup back in the 90's ...I'll work it out one day and get all that music back!

Once you learn its weird operating system, the stylus/touchscreen system is really fast. You'll build songs really quickly :)

You are the best PMA-5 knowledge source anywhere! I have a request: can you do a video about how to use the PMA-5 as a midi sequencer? It seems like it would bring life to an old keyboard that is lacking an internal sequencer. Great for folks that love how their old keyboard sounds, but need an external sequencer to capture the moment

Hi there! I recently purchased a PMA-5. It is in beautiful shape, and it came with the case but without a stylus. I can find zero online references regarding where to find for purchase a replacement stylus. Have you, by chance, any suggestions as to what sort of a stylus should work with this without damaging the screen? Thanks my friend! Our interactions are always a pleasure, and your presentations are always useful and informative as well as entertaining. Have a great day!

First of all - Thanks! Second - those Styluses are utterly rare. I heard of someone getting one from Roland once for some ridiculous price. But all I can suggest really is to find an old palm pilot or similar device that used such a slim, small stylus.

@@glenesis Be aware that it might not fit in the hole on the PMA-5. But at least it's the right size for those tiny on-screen buttons.

I just got aa PMA-5 as well, do a search for 'hard-tip stylus' and you'll soon see ones coming up that are similar, they work fine (although not necc. the same size, you might need to try a few to get a good fit, they're cheap as chips.)

In our band we don't Midi sequencers anymore, but real audio tracks.
