I would suspect Felipe Massa feels very very lucky to be alive still as something similar happened to him in Hungary. He hit a spring that came off Barrichello's and it went into his eye. Sadly for Wilson the part that went into him was a little too heavy and and hit him in the wrong part of the head. Henry Surtees (former f1 champ John's son) had a similar fatal incident to Wilson.
I covered auto racing for more than 25 years as a photographer and photographed many hundreds of crashes, so I have learned to see many details before and as the accidents happen and to see even more when reviewing still and video footage afterwards. It is interesting that Wilson's car never changed it's line until after safely getting past Karam's car, then Wilson's car makes a gradual left turn as the brakes are applied hard (note the skid marks and the smoking tires although the car is not sliding sideways.) His head does not drop forward until after he passes Karam's car. It appears he remained aware and functioning at least until just before he hit the inside wall. Even after being hit in the head, he may have been able to avoid hitting Karam or another car.

Watching the accident was gut-wrenching. It was just an amazing race up until that point and then this accident happened. First I thought Sage was the one that's hurt and then they showed the replays with the nosecone flying about...
Sage Karam was in a interview earlier today with Speedsport, tomorrow is going to mark his first appearance at Pocono Raceway for the first time since this incident
This accident has to bring about some very hard and smart thinking. We don’t need a knee jerk measure! A lot of testing and retesting and modifications may be called for to prevent another death or serious injury! This much loved and enjoyed sport of ours, should be a lot safer than it is. I drove Formula Ford when I was 16 - 17. I’ve loved motor racing since I was just a little kid. I’ve seen some horrific crashes and been in a couple. I was very lucky to have not have been hurt or killed. Back in the early 70’s, there wasn’t much you could count on to protect you in case of a crash. We’ve come a long way, but we just can’t stop looking to improve things further. I hope no more deaths, that would be a great result!
That was awful what happened. I mostly watch NASCAR. I don't watch IndyCar all that much, not really a fan of IndyCar, but I did watch this race. This was one of the most horrific and tragic things I've ever watched on live TV. RIP Justin Wilson. He has a home in Heaven now and he's holding hands with Jesus.
This was the first fatal wreck I had ever seen live, I have watched racing my whole life, mostly in the safety era. This race was crazy all day with massive wrecks thought the race that are overlooked due to this tragic wreck. Even though pocono was fun track for fans, I’m happy they took it if the schedule because It was way to dangerous. RIP Justin Wilson
I mean, name another driver that has lost their life there due to the actual track, and not just some freak occurrence... Put Pocono and Michigan back on the schedule yesterday, and include IMS in a new triple crown...
Brian Burgett sorry I have to correct you there. Davey was spun halfway down the straightaway entering turn 3. Justin Wilson was killed coming out of turn 1.
This is weird all a weird feeling for me having met Justin at all the Denver GPs back in Champ Car and him living about 25 minutes from my house and his team(RuSport) for many years was a 10 minutes drive from where my childhood house was. First time a driver I've actually met and talked to has passed.
I thinks it's time for windshields that go all around the front and the sides of the cockpit that would be at least 1 inch high like mclaren and Ferrari had on their cars in the 1976 F1 season, we already lost Bianchi who was my favorite and wheldon who I really admired. Don't use the "tradition" excuse anymore please.
I agree 100%, it would do so much for safety and wouldn't affect a damn thing in terms of appeal. Nobody who's not 119 years old and dead already watches open-wheel cars because they don't have a little Plexiglas windshield to look through. It's because they're superior racing machines, and I refuse to believe they can't still be superior to NASCAR without SOME kind of minimal protection for their heads. I mean, come on. It's insane. It's basically like fighting a boss monster where you hit him once in the head and he dies instantly. Oh boy, that's surely logical. That really makes me want to tune in. Not the cutting edge speed, or the outstanding grip and manueverbility... I just go ga-ga because the cars retain elements from back before they knew how to make Lexan... terrific. Ugh. How in the fuck are we still re-enacting scenes from Faces of Death in the year 2015? I refer of course to Tom Pryce smashing his brains to bits on a fire extinguisher at 145 mph at Kylami in 1977. Same EXACT mechanism of injury, same "public shock" and nothing has changed in 38 years. Hooray for tradition. I think people like to see the gore.
If you look at 0:17 the car that spun and hit the wall. That’s not Justin that’s karam. He survived that crash. If you look at 0:26 that’s Justin Wilson and the limping head
I noticed with a lot of these wrecks they never show more closer view of what happened. I know they got those camera views. Just like with Dale Earnhardt senior I know they have an in cab view of the driver himself it would explain a lot. Before I get any hate responses I know they can't show those things on TH-cam but at the same time they do manage to show a lot other stuff just as worse.
Was it a plain head injury, broken neck, or a combination of both that killed poor Justin? It looks like the car is still pretty much in control until it started to head toward the wall. Did he lose consciousness then, and the impact with the wall did him in, or was it the piece of debris? I don't mean to offend anyone. I'm just curious.
Head Trauma. More likely the piece of debris, due to the weight and size of an object, along with how fast Wilson was going. At that point Wilson is probably going 180-190 slowing down for the caution. I mean look how much damage a spring did to Massa or a piece of random debris did to Hinchcliffe. He was already unconscious, but the impact with the wall did him no favors.
I was there that day . . .I did not stop crying after that, when I saw him get in the helicopter I knew that it was the last time we will see him . . . Edit: when the helicopter was taking off they said he was struck from debre Edit:[if you guys think I'm lying then you are super rude to say I'm lying about something like this]
this was a very sad day in motorsports when accidents like this happen. I am very happy to see F1 testing than implementing the halo device. I havent heard why Indycar hasnt pursued thier windscreen idea further. such as in this clip th-cam.com/video/BXUJ7GBQK50/w-d-xo.html we can prevent accidents like this now, we have the technology and the ability, but I haven't seen the US counterparts implement the same safety standards yet.
From all the possible places Wilson could be at on the track he had to be in that spot at that moment, so ask yourself why?, you are here on this earth and be grateful no matter how bad your life is.
Because when it is your time it is your time and you will not trick death into not taking you. Just think of the odds of that small piece of the cone hitting him and how many things had to happen for it to hit him exactly how it did. It's crazy. We never know when our time is up.
They said that nose piece weighed about 200 lbs! Right in the head, instant death I'm sure. Sad that there was no way to warn those approaching that there was flying debris and stuff on the track too.
Justin worked so hard to take Dale Coyne equipment far and show what he could do by winning 2 races and getting many great finishes. @@LiamTalksMotorsport Massa was very lucky to survive that impact, it is not at all surprising that Justin Wilson didn't survive his.
I was at this race. It has burned in my mind the accident. It was my first and my last Indycar race I did and will attend.
Idk who was the cameraman who zoomed out of Wilson but as one myself, he did that with the quickness when he saw Wilson wasn't moving

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Wilson and Andretti Auto-sport. It is very, very sad.
What a sad day. Such a nice well mannered person. RIP.
Thank you for installing foam walls
Was exactly my first thought too
Praying for you Justin.
Watching the accident was gut-wrenching. It was just an amazing race up until that point and then this accident happened. First I thought Sage was the one that's hurt and then they showed the replays with the nosecone flying about...
Not really
Poor guy never saw it comming. Racing is deadly yet people continue to do it. Rest in peace Justin.
RIP Justin Wilson ❤️ 🇬🇧 🏴
Reminds me of the Henry Surtees crash from 2009.
Sage Karam was in a interview earlier today with Speedsport, tomorrow is going to mark his first appearance at Pocono Raceway for the first time since this incident
Sage’s first time back at this track today xfinity since that race…RIP
He has a home in Heaven now and he's holding hands with Jesus.
you can see what looks like part of the steering or suspension flying up just as justin passes the wreck.
I remember watching this live. Sad day R.I.P
Our hearts and prayers go out to Justin Wilson and his family. Hope he has a fast and full recovery!
The Marshall family
Tom Marshall yeah, gl with that
Tom Marshall Sadly he died...
Ted Oliver Nice comment, show some respect!
Shannon Trainer Yes it is a sad day in racing history, My sympathy goes out to his family.
+Ted Oliver Tosser
That area of the track has always been a dangerous place.
That's where Davey Allison had his wreck in 92 .
Back then that wall wasn't there .
Brian Burgett sorry I have to correct you there. Davey was spun halfway down the straightaway entering turn 3. Justin Wilson was killed coming out of turn 1.
Bobby Allison's career ended at Pocono in 1988
That was so damn unlucky. Rest easy
One of the reasons why Indy Car stopped racing at Pocono
6:24 I’m pretty sure that the very moment the nose cone hit Justin. And you can hear it happen too. Start at 6:22
Ever since 1992, Indycar has had drivers die every 3-5 years man. Smh
Hopefully that'll come to an end with the new addition of the aeroscreen.
This is weird all a weird feeling for me having met Justin at all the Denver GPs back in Champ Car and him living about 25 minutes from my house and his team(RuSport) for many years was a 10 minutes drive from where my childhood house was. First time a driver I've actually met and talked to has passed.
anyone else notice this is a ESPN look instead of NBCSN look, anyway sad to hear bout Justin Wilson 😥
Windshield wouldnt help Bianchi out.
Igelitovy Sacek No shit. He hit some heavy machinery. That will never happen again with regulation. 🤦♂️
0:22 you can actually hear when the piece smacks off his helmet
If you look at 0:17 the car that spun and hit the wall. That’s not Justin that’s karam. He survived that crash. If you look at 0:26 that’s Justin Wilson and the limping head
You can hear the impact just before it cuts to Chip.
How come Wilson moves his head at 0:30?
hunterhayate56 oh I see now thanks
This is hard to watch so unfortunate poor guy never knew what hit him
God bless, Justin you are missed!
I’m not really a Superfan but I will say those guys (& gals) who do open-wheel racing are made of some tougher stuff
R.I.P Justin Wilson. It killed him he died a few hours ago.
Goodbye Justin :( We will miss you
Sad, freak accident. R.I.P. Justin
This is very sad, are they planning to add the "Halo" on their cars like F1?
0:15 as he enters corner, oil or something is visible just before he spun.
Fonzies HW68 yea
@@Christianntaylor this is so sad man 😢
@@Christianntaylor Erie, at 0:21 there's a thump, I think that's when the front cone truck Justin Wilson 😢
Fonzies HW68 ik bro was he year he died I got his auto graph at Indy he was such a great driver and person
I get emotional when I see this. R.I.P
My son painted his bike in honor of justin
I was there that day . . .I did not stop crying after that, when I saw him get in the helicopter I knew that it was the last time we will see him . . .
Edit: when the helicopter was taking off they said he was struck from debre
Edit:[if you guys think I'm lying then you are super rude to say I'm lying about something like this]
I dont think you're lying and I also cried.
It looked simple but if you watch a footage that is shot by spectators you will know how fast welson crashed.
this was a very sad day in motorsports when accidents like this happen. I am very happy to see F1 testing than implementing the halo device. I havent heard why Indycar hasnt pursued thier windscreen idea further. such as in this clip th-cam.com/video/BXUJ7GBQK50/w-d-xo.html
we can prevent accidents like this now, we have the technology and the ability, but I haven't seen the US counterparts implement the same safety standards yet.
With those thick enclosed helmets a nose cone section can knock you out?? Holy shit....but as fast as they were going I can see how so. Damn......
When he got his opportunity to race in top equipment it was a dream come true. Then he gets killed in a freak accident. The worst part was he was maybe going full time in 2016
That’s why now we can see halo on F1 cars... RIP J.Wilson 🙏
F1 is years ahead of this
I don't understand. Wouldn't you need a roof to prevent this. The Halo can't stop something from striking you head on no.. 🤔
@@F1ll1nTh3Blanks when you move with such high speed things don't just comes straight down if they do because of the speed they'd just hit the roll bar. You rather drive into debris with speeds that high!
:22 you can actually hear the hit to his head. How sad
Almost looked like that nose-cone hit him straight in the head
Honda makes good bikes and sporty cars but not good trucks or race cars
Are you so dumb to think this was Hondas fault?
+Witty TH-cam name yes because if they were fast they would not be back in the pak so much
