Three days after Oklahoma opened, Oscar Hammerstein was in a ground floor hotel room in NY. He had the window a little open to get air and he woke up to children singing "Oh, What A Beautiful Morning....." He says it was the most deeply satisfying moment of his professional life. The song had spread that fast, even children were singing it.

My great granddaddy used to sing this song to my grandmother every morning while he was making them breakfast. My granddaddy passed away when I was 9 (4 years ago ) and I loved him with all my heart. This was his favorite song and we even sang it at his funeral, not a single person in the room needed the lyric sheet because they all knew him that well. He was a retired Air Force veteran in WW2 and my grandmother has the Flag that was given to him when he finished his duty as a pilot, still hanging in her room. RIP Granddaddy.

But am searching baffled thinking where did he first hear it?!

When you say the names like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, Alan Jay Lerner and Loewe(who wrote and composed shows like An American in Paris and My Fair Lady), people still smile. The singing for this scene is not recorded live. Gordon would have sang this first in a recording studio, with a microphone close for best audio quality. Than filmed this scene outdoors, the production crew playing this song on speakers and Gordon either sings along to his own voice or perhaps not, just lip-syncing himself.

My grandmother has dementia and forgets who we are but she still remembers the words to this song (and also other songs from Oklahoma and other American musicals of the same era), and we sang them today and you could see her face lighting up. My great grandmother was born in Oklahoma before it was a state and my grandmother was born in St Louis, Missouri. I've never been to the USA before though I want to go there one day (my grandmother has lived in the UK for 61 years). Music just has such personal meaning and associations

I have a very distinct memory of this song. I was pushing my then toddler son through the main waiting room in Grand Central Station NYC. It was Xmas time and they would often have live music playing during the holiday season. This wonderful HS band was playing this song and I just had to stop and listen. Such a beautiful song, with amazing young talented musicians, for me it was a magical moment I will never forget. I'm sure they haven't either! Every day we are alive is beautiful!

My grandfather had apparently loved this musical, and sang it quite often while my father was growing up. My father would blast it during some mornings as well for me and my sister too while we were growing up. My grandfather just passed yesterday, he had dementia for years now and he was slowly shutting down completely. but while in the hospital yesterday, he sang a long with my grandmother and sister when they started singing this song. i cannot wait to continue his and my fathers tradition of singing this song during the morning, and maybe one day, singing it to my own children as well. I am sure he will be singing it with me.

In 1958 when I was 4 my mom, dad and grandma moved from Texas to California. Dad sang this song as he drove and I loved the feeling of adventure and hope. The idea of something being as high as an elephant’s eye impressed me too. Dad also sang Cuanta Le Gusta, which Is a fun song to sing, and a great song to sing when starting a trip. When we can travel again!

My family were settlers in Oklahoma in those “Wild West” days, and my ancestor Jacob Cline was a very popular livestock auctioneer. All of his kids would play music for the crowds and they would all make merry. I’m blessed enough to have had these stories passed down to me to know… I find great comfort in this song and the thought of having come from a place of steadfast adventure, music, and love.

Why does watching that bring tears to my eyes? The melody of this song seems to reach very deep into the heart. What absolutely wonderful music.
Mr. MacRae sang so beautifully, his horse was so beautiful, it's like watching a dream. He's what they now call an archetype: the good guy on a horse, like the embodiment of the American Dream, the cowboy knight that represented all the best of us and in us. I want it back, that America, and men like that. And needless to say, music like that.
