Sean Sander unfortunately this video was probably made possible by (chomage) funds coming directly from equalization payments. I hope these frivolous expenditures are reined in considering the state of our rona-weakened economy. God Bless 🙏🏼

You obviously have never actually visited the Oil Sands region. You have not mentioned the fact that extraction of the oil actually cleans the soil which is actually reclaimed by nature. Also, Canada’s Oil industry is actually the most environmentally friendly in the world. Check the regulations in the middle-east and russia

I'm born and raised in Edmonton Alberta. I worked as a heavy equipment operator on our pipelines for about a decade.
Can I fix some errors here?
Albertans are far more 'left' leaning than the rest of Canada realizes. We even voted in the NDP before Kenney.
But, because we voted in the NDP in 2015, oil employers freaked out because they knew regulations were coming. So they began punishing Albertans for it.
I shit you not. Albertan owned oil and pipeline companies were intentionally laying off any Albertan workers, and keeping their workers that came here from eastern Canada.
Speaking of those eastern Canada workers, pipeline companies got such giant tax breaks when they hired someone from Ontario, Quebec or Newfoundland and brought them here, that they were actually LOSING money by hiring Albertans over the past 20 years.
ALOT of Albertans 'resource wealth' was stolen from us through this method. When an Ontarian can come work here, and pay no taxes here while utilizing our services, then take all his profits back to his province and pay taxes on it there, this 'system' was set up to steal Alberta's wealth.
Albertans are PISSED at Kenney decimating our healthcare, education, and even our crown land camping. Albertans Hate Kenney. Trust me, next election, hes gone.
    Now, about Equalization.
I love Equalization. I've Always been proud of the thought that my tax dollars and profits from our province, go to keep provinces not as lucky as us, alive.
But when I learned Quebec, who's Provincial GDP is greater than ours, has been hoarding the majority of that money since its inception, I got mad.
Then they have the audacity to mock us, and say "what's in it for them" when we asked to send a pipeline through their province?
I'd say $198Billion should have been enough.
That said, I want Equalization to remain a thing. I just want Quebec cut the hell out of it. They earn more than enough to sustain their population. Just because they allow a greedy few at the top to keep most of it, doesnt mean we have to fill in the gap.
Especially when Actual 'have not' provinces like New Brunswick are so broke they're closing emergency departments and laying off doctors.

A rare nuanced comment on TH-cam! Although Alberta was very lucky with the oil, Albertans have been very unlucky to be in the midst of a few developing things, one is the overreach of corporations into politics, which is why the conservative government grew so powerful there and in turn that means an growing pressure to apply neoliberal policies, in this case decimating healthcare but they go beyond that, these by itself will make for Albertans to actually keep the money in the province and circulating among the population as opposed to be hoarded by corporate elites. The inter-provincial politics are other matter, and indeed Ontario and Québec being the central pole for Canadian population and politics is a shit deal for other provinces, the worse is that the money that has been siphoned here to eastern Canada is mostly reaching again only corporation and politician, the money into politics here is crazy, and real state too, now I put real state in the same bag as politics and corporations because that money is not being used to say, create green infrastructure, develop norther Canada, lock out of fossil fuels, but just bouncing around doing nothing for most of us, instead Albertans could've used that money to develop other industries and become a powerhouse on sustainable energy since the 2000's, and the same could be said about the rest of the equalizations, but alas we have to work through this mess now.

To start, I agree with almost of what you said.
Taxes are paid to the province of residence though.
Almost all oil workers in Alberta pay their taxes to the province of Alberta.
Thanks to all the hard working oil workers in Alberta for their disproportionate national contribution.
Quebec really needs to sort out their unfair dependence on Alberta's workers, and quit gaming the equalization formula by subsidizing their electrical production simply because it is omitted from the equation.

Alberta will need equalization sooner that expected, the thing is most of that oil money has gone into corporate hands or wasted, oil is fleeting and the dawn of its era is here, the thing is, Alberta barely built the welfare network and diversification necessary to leap forward, people came from the easy money and they will go when it goes too, Québec was the economic heart of Canada and was heavily affected from the Anglo flight from the referendums despite having a very solid mixed-economy welfare foundation, whereas Alberta only has neoliberal policies which are subpar at least, the future is grim for the province.

If Alberta separates I doubt very much that the other western provinces will do the same, Alberta risks being land Locked and it could cost them more
Why not tell them the truth to Albertans?
Truth that Alberta only pays the 5% tax unlike Quebec who pays it 17%
No, we are not jealous in Quebec because if Quebec finally ends up separating it could be very expensive in Canada since Quebec owns several international seaports and Canada will have to pays rights of passage, suddenly Quebec separates it will no longer have to pay the 17% tax and as Quebec is not landlocked (Unlike Alberta).

Alberta is not rich any more. Its debt has exploded from $12.8 billion in 2015 to $116 billion by the end of 2021, the fastest increase in debt of any Canadian province in history. (in 2005, under Premier Ralph Klein, Alberta was completely deft-free. Its debt began again when Klein retired and Ed Stelmach became the new premier. From then on the debt began to accelerate at a faster and faster pace.) Alberta now has, on a per capita basis, the second highest debt in the country, after the province of Ontario. Even so, the province is still required every year to send billions of dollars in equalization money to the eastern provinces, especially Quebec. Since Quebec and Ontario perpetually control Canada's federal government, there is no way that Alberta can get out of the equalization arrangement- unless the province leaves confederation. Alberta's oil industry is also down dramatically, having been attacked relentlessly by Canada's federal government and by environmentalist fanatics. As for the oil sands, Alberta has been very careful in recent years to avoid damage to the environment, which of course makes no difference to the environmentalist zealots, who oppose any use of any fossil fuels at all. Alberta is also not that conservative, nor that business friendly, nor all that religious, especially in the two big cities of Calgary and Edmonton. The university town of Edmonton, the capital of the province, is socialist, giving the neo-Marxist NDP a majority of the votes in both 2015 and the 2019 provincial elections. The NDP also formed government in the province in 2015, and quickly drove up the provincial debt from 12.8 billion dollars to 59.8 billion dollars, a four-fold increase in just four years. Since then the "conservative" United Conservative Party of Alberta has driven up the provincial debt even more, almost doubling it from 59.8 billion dollars to 116 billion dollars, in just 2.5 years. The province's current premier, Jason Kenney, began his political career as Liberal in Saskatchewan, and is still obviously a Liberal (or Red Tory) at heart.

    • @thomasjefferson6
      @thomasjefferson6 ปีที่แล้ว

@@happygolucky8654 The difference is that Quebec is regarded by Ontario one of the "two founding provinces" and the "two founding cultures" of Canada. (The two maritime provinces don't count for anything in this line of thinking). By way of contrast, Alberta is regarded as little more than a hick prairie province whose duty is, like a good little colony, to contribute to the "national interest", which means,of course, the "Ontario/Quebec interest". It wasn't until 1930 that the prairie provinces were even allowed to own their own natural resources (unlike all the other provinces in confederation, and it was Alberta who fought hardest to obtain them).
