This is exactly what I wanted to see - how the collaboration between Elvin Bishop and Mickey Thomas produced “Fooled Around and Fell In Love.” The older live performance of this song here on YT is its best version and a pop classic. Thomas comes up with the best life vocal performance I’ve ever heard on YT, and Bishop follows through with a superbly composed and executed solo on his big Gibson. If you are a child of the 60s, this song is a must-have.
I always loved the song. Back in high school in 83’ one of my buddies friends had girl trouble and I was listening to him talk about it. I told him. You fooled around and feel in Love. Quoting the title of Elvin Bishop song.
Elvin Bishop was/is a blues guitar player extraordinaire, and Mickey Thomas is/was one of the best, finest vocalists in the world! What a duo, unforgettable 😎
Very nicely done. Incredibly informative and a great piece of work. The song alone reminded me of 01/26/1976 USN basic training. We pitched in to buy a stereo for our breakroom smoke breaks between classes and Military training. Unlike Peter Frampton's live cut the same year and short lived for my taste, I never tired of Bishop's song which helped me through until graduation and into my next duty station. Sort of a lead into a sailors life traveling the seas, leisurely women in every port until I too fell in love. Here I sit with that very same lovely young girl whom I met 42yrs ago. Btw, this song too still remains on top of my best hit list today. Kudos.
I met them both in 1976 in San Diego on the Fooled Around tour. They had an after concert party at a club called Spankys' at Rosecrans and Midway Dr. I tried to talk to Elvin ( I'd seen him in the film "The Last Days of the Fillmore" and liked it a lot), but he was mobbed and so I talked to the singer that was totally alone with no one approaching him. Yes, Mickey Thomas. When the club closed and everyone was leaving Bishop asked who would drive him to the hotel. We perked up and started offering a ride semi aggressivrly. Took a minute of back and forth but he went with us. My roommate and his date and me and my date in a Fiat 850. I sat in the back behind Elvin with his Gibson ES-345 between my legs (I had one of those!) and Elvin in the front passengers seat. It was a TINY car! My roommates date sat on the center console in the front...it was a stick shift on the floor..she was sitting next to the star of the concert we just saw...every time he shifted into 2nd and 4th gears...she got REAL self conscious. He was super cool. Took him to the Holiday in on the north side of downtown. Great memory.
I saw Alvin open up for Eric Clapton 1975 very good show I totally enjoyed it a good player good strength on stage very professional piece to everyone be safe
Micky did his best work with Richie Blackmore and 🌈 Stone cold is an all time great Fooled around and fell in love was also featured in Rob Zombies Devils rejects film
Fooled Around was also included in "Boogie Nights" and most recently, "Guardians of the Galaxy"..... And, now...with so few live music gigs and concert tours..the royalties from "Fooled Around" (twice a year) keep me from going hungry....lol. Thank God I have a girlfriend ...fulfilling the old joke punch line...."What do you call a musician without a girlfriend? Homeless."
That was Elvin singing both of them...on both the studio versions and the live versions ("Raisin' Hell" album)....and, btw, Elvin originally nixed "Fooled Around" as the first release from the album, "Struttin' My Stuff".... ...When Szymczyk sent the master to Capricorn, they freaked and immediately called Elvin and said..."Dude, you gotta a hit on your hands......" .....I recall Elvin responding with ..."Which one? " Struttin' My Stuff" (which had been his choice for the single) ???. Capricorn said: "No..hell no....the hit is "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" ..... Elvin: "...but I didn't sing that one".... ....Funny thing: Elvin refused to have "Fooled Around" released as the first single from "Struttin' My Stuff"....and so, Capricorn reluctantly agreed to put out the title cut, "Struttin' My Stuff" as the first single.... It bombed....so then Capricorn just said "**** it..." and they released "Fooled Around" as the single... went to #2 ....as I recall Diana Ross kept us from being #1 ....don't recall her song but it was at #1 seemingly forever...lol. ,,,,,I'm writing a book about all the groups I was with either as sax/keys, musical director, arranger, etc. ..but, it is hard work when you have to change the names to protect the "guilty"...lol. It will be called "If I'm Happy, I'm Scared"...if I ever finish it.
Glen my son, learned guitar in the blink of an eye, he came home from a concert where he saw Peter Frampton and said he sucked. Laughing like hell Glen is better
