I love all your videos. I’m disabled and I wish I can do what you do. My Pops has cancer and me watching all your videos means a lot to me. It’s so great that you get to go fishing with your dad.
Starting my new job on a fishing boat this Wednesday (2-12-25) and this channel has been my binge of info on what to expect/prioritize, thank you!
Everybody has a bad day/night, you'll have better days! Glad you guys got a full haul!
Hey Jakob, here is a comment I'm sure you'll remember if you do read it.
I was 20 yrs old fishing out of Louisburg Nova Scotia for National Sea Products. I'd been fishing for about a year and a half on a beautiful boat a rear trawler called "The Cape Ann".
Our fishing grounds were the Grand Banks on the Atlantic. We fished all over skirted the Titanic sink zone. Caught tons of fish lol no pun there.
While we taxied for three days we began getting warnings of a hurricane that was heading towards the Eastern seaboard, we kept going. Got fish to catch.
Wasn't our storm sure it wouldn't be our last.
Our trips usually were between 14-18 days. 14 at sea and back to shore for 3 days then out again. Rinse and repeat. Shifts were split between twelve of us.
Full rotations, the stories I can tell about the crew alone blew my wifes mind when I told her.
Anyways
By October 25th-26th the weather was scary.
I was young and scared and I'm literally shaking just typing out this long comment many years later. It still sits vividly in my mind and hits my nervous system when I talk about it.
I'll continue
We were over the Grand Banks ( once massive cod and haddock grounds) when the worst of it hit us. I didn't think I was going to make it home.
The storm was everywhere around us. 35ft waves coming over the bow every minute it seemed. Up the wall and then down the wall for hours.
I remember a wall of water so big that when it hit it came crashing at the windows. The boat went pointing straight up I thought we were going to flip. I grabbed the foot rail under the wheel. My buddy and senior deck hand Blackie grabbed me by the jacket lifted me and threw me at the wheel and told me to never ever let go of it again. Blackie was around 6ft 5 and 300 lbs.
The next next week was horrible. We didn't fish for most of it rather deciding to "wait out the storm" our skipper just meandered through as best he could. It was late Oct 28th I guess as the record states (again it'd be difficult for me to recite an exact time if not for the records lol time wasn't a thing out on the Atlantic) The Mayday Mayday distress call from a smaller boat called "The Andrea Gail". We were worried for them and ourselves and others at sea including my own brother who was out fishing in another boat "The Cape LaHave". We got through the terror of that storm and very soon after that the government basically shut down our fishing industry. We were left with no work and nowhere to go so I headed West.
A few years later I hear from a buddy of mine that they called that hurricane The Perfect Storm.
Fast forward to 2000, Clooney, Wahlberg and others are in a blockbuster movie about the souls lost and the Andrea Gail. The Perfect Storm.
I couldn't believe it. I met my wife in 1998. When the movie came out I casually told her that I fished in that hurricane and recalled the distress call. She found it a tale to say the least until it was confirmed by my fishing brethren, my brother and my mother.
I just sat down with a delicious Rusty Nail and thought I was going to hit thumbs up and subscribe but then this happened. Thanks for reading it, and if you ever want more info and details on this by all means let me know. I have pictures of the boat at sea and a scale model.
Not many of us around who can say we were there for that part of fishing history. Hope you enjoyed. Oh and I liked and subbed.
