    Hi Wizard. Love the boat videos. I just thought I would give you a tip with the iPad that will let you download the Navionics app.
    1. Download the app on a newer IOS device that supports IOS 12.
    2. Sign in on the iPad and go to the purchased apps list.
    3. Tap download. It will ask you if you would like to download an older version of the app.
    Hope this helps!

    There's a reason gas tanks are in the bilge. Ballast. You may have made your boat unstable by mounting the tank on top of the deck.

    • @SuperWooba
      @SuperWooba 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would like to add that the stability issue is exasperated with the addition of the solar panels on the roof. Weight distribution is crucial on a boat. The only way to reinstate proper stability at this point would be to put at least 50 gallons of water in the bilge tank for ballast before floating the vessel.

    Wizard, if you need more fuel tankage, you could always put a racing car type bag tank inside the original aluminium main tank by cutting an access panel, which you then cover over with a screwed down access hatch. These are now quite long lived.

    • @PixelmechanicYYZ
      @PixelmechanicYYZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was thinking that as well. One wY to lessen the effect is to put some ballast weight where the tank used to be... like maybe.. a junk engine block? :)

    • @JohnSmith-pl2bk
      @JohnSmith-pl2bk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PixelmechanicYYZ
      Getting that fuel weight down and centred could be important.
      Unless there is some unknown reason not to do so why not cut open the top of the original tank and place a slightly smaller fuel tank in it's place?
      When the top of the old tank is off you could fibreglass the bottom of the old tank sealing the leak and the old tank would then be a bund if the new tank leaked....
      You could reuse the 30 gallon tank you already bought...just leave the framework and seat top where it is now installed...
      Just because it once had a capacity of 70 gallons doesn't mean you need to replace it with another of that capacity...

    Those electric cooler are pretty good, but they're also immense power hogs. I would recommend unplugging it from your batteries when not charging. They draw a constant 4-8 amps. A much more expensive compressor style fridge cooler is the more power efficient option for long term operation but for weekend outings the Peltier coolers work fine.

    For that cooler I'd add in a few of those plastic blocks you fill with water & freeze just too let the cooler keep itself at a low temperature for a while longer even if they'll thaw within 2 - 4 hours cooling down whatever things you put in there.
    And also if that part fails or something can't supply electricity too that cooler that's a temporary backup too keep whatever is in there fresh for a while longer.
    While you perhaps travel back towards land too store whatever food is in there somewhere else or even bring it home.
    If you can later down the line, add in a proper boat deck freezer, a modern one would be very efficient together with a small wind power generator for just a bit extra power too charge with & those solar panels.
    Maybe you could rearrange them so you could fit 3 lengthwise across the roof instead of 2 horizontally.
    Dunno here how much room you would have beyond at a glance.
    Might stick out beyond the roof a bit looking a bit goofy but if you'd need more charging power that might be the best option besides perhaps hanging them on the side of the helm or whatever you call where you drive.
    Worst case scenario i suppose is bringing a gas generator for emergency power & some tow line just in case another boat needs too tow you out of a spot or back too shore.
    (Do find out where you can tie that stuff down ofc just so you don't rip apart most of the boat before you find the right spot.)
    Better too be a bit over prepared after all, specially if there is perhaps some medical emergency happening.
    Be it getting an allergic reaction or similar, make a plan for that as well wizard.

About 10 seconds later smoke began coming from the amp. It had been working fine (although waaaay over rated, watt-wise) for several years but just decided to give up. The keys weren't in the ignition, nothing else has issues. Luckily I saw the smoke, popped the cable off the battery and pulled the fuse to the amp. Reconnected the battery, hit the switch and it fired up. Everything else works fine. Removed the amp, no wiring issues, no critter marks, etc. Realize anything can happen but odd enough to toss out a thought before seeing someone else's stuff go up.

    Please please please, make sure you have a two escape routes that someone like the wizard can get through. Make sure it’s easy to open any door. I had a friend who loved scuba diving die in a boat fire. The fire broke out in a common area that ended up blocking the only entrance/exit while everyone was sleeping. Yes you have a smoke detector, but it’s a tight fit and if the fire is blocking, you’re not “making a run for it”....Google, “Los angeles scuba fire”

    A lot of people bad mouth the Bayliner but in fact are pretty good boats - a little under powered - the 245 was one of their most popular models. I would eventually replace the bottom of the gas tank or buy a new one's. I notice what looks like a pressurized alcohol stove - replace with a canister style such as Origo- much easier to use - should be agreat weekend

    To install Navionics on your iPad, or any other app of the sort:
    1. Since you have an iPhone, download and install it on your iPhone. Otherwise, you'd need to use iTunes or something.
    2. Now that you've downloaded this app, Apple has associated the app with your account.
    3. Now you can download an OLDER version of the app on your iPad that will be compatible.
    I've used this trick for some apps on my iPod Touch 4G which runs iOS 6. Though since it's my only Apple device, I had to use iTunes for step 1.
    EDIT: @daleko3454 already explained this I see, and probably a bit better than I did.

    Wizard, if you install the app on a newer device that is supported, you can install it on your old ipad but it will ask if you want to download a old version, if a version existed that supported iOS 9. They need the same appleID of course and it will end up having a cloud symbol and be in your purchases. It doesn’t need to stay downloaded on your newer device, it just needs to be in your purchase history of the appleID.
    This you can do with any app and you might find something that works that way, as very very very very few apps will say that they fully support iOS 9, let alone the niche area you’re looking for.

    If you are worried about gps, buy a hand-held Garmin and download the charts from a computer. That's what I had on my first boat. Eventually I invested in a built-in Garmin with chart plotter that also is wired into the engine to see speed and depth.

    If you have any charted underwater hazards where you boat, the problem with that iPad is not only incompatibility with charting software, it is the refresh rate. GPS software is memory hungry and a CPU hog. You’ll be crashing over some structure loosing your outdrive and seconds later your chart plotting software will catch up with that event. All to save $500 on a new iPad.

    I have an idea. may you could get vertical, 4-6" diameter wind-turbines, placed @ each extreme-rear corner, where if you're anchored & swimming/fishing/"kicking-back, you can get power if the 2-100 watt panels don't give you enough. I don't know if you have a canvas-cover over your deck @ the rear, so if you wish a break from sun/rain you could hook the tarp/cover to a turbine-housing. Turbines could be integrated into a "roll-bar-like" solid-piece @ the stern of your boat You could offer these[turbines] to us, like your tools, so you can expand a revenue-stream, there, and some of us could dial-into windpower . The middle, "fly-over states" get a LOT of "Solar" from WIND, so maybe others could harness power from a turbine, to replace/augment direct solar-power generated from cells. Where's your "bait-box"? Maybe you don't plan to do any fishing. What about the qagga/zebra mussel-problem? Do you have a copper-based solution to run through tanks/piping/props/engines that contact lake-water, so your intakes/other systems don't support those invasive mussels, and plug-up systems on the boat? Maybe invasive mussels could be discouraged by an electric charge placed on the boat engines? Some states have huge fines around NOT following "Anti-mussel" regs. How's your aqua "secret-car" project coming? I haven't noticed the vids on that, yet. One of my fav-movies is Charlton Heston's "Omega Man" from the '70s. You have "Omega Garage", so you might check-out "Omega Man." PS. Have you ever seen an early '80s Camaro with an inline-6? They ought to be rarer than hen's teeth. One could be a "runner" with a 292 cu" Jimmy or a LL8 4200L DOHC Vortec all alloy inliner. From '82 on, GM went to tiny V-8s{305} and V-6s {2.8L}. LUV your vids.

    We had purchased a 25 foot cuddie with full camper top
    Had it about a month
    We enjoyed it on the lake on a Sunday
    Buttoned it up covered it at out dock all was good
    Three days later the highway patrol called to say out boat sank
    We went out right away to find the back end underwater a guy we rented the dock from said he saw lights on inside
    Once we got inside we noticed all these plastic bottles and stuff
    Somebody had gotten in it and had a party it was totally trashed
    Insurance dicked around because it was new and was totaled out but they didn’t offer anything fit the trailer. So I told them to get their boat off my trailer! They gave me what it cost new
    Will never have another boat even thought I grew up on boats

    Carbon Monoxide detector should be about two feet off the floor. I have a lot of experience with those thermo electric coolers. The do not work well in a warm environment. They are only capable of about a 35 degree delta. So if it is 90 out you’ll only get down to about 55 in the cooler. We usually use ours in our car and we keep it about 70 in the car so it works well there. Where does the condensate go from your cabin air conditioner?

    I have a similar boat as yours that I use in a saltwater environment primarily to travel shallow backcountry areas. you will find your best option is a chartplotter with a depth sounder built into it.. you can get them for just a couple of hundred dollars that are way more useful than your iPad or an Android pad.. Also those tablets are not waterproof nor are they Glare Proof.. they are almost useless in front of you in the sunshine...

    Hi Car Wizard, I am not sure the CO sensor/detector high up on the ceiling is the right idea. CO alarms should likely be mid way between ceiling and floor. Also regarding your chart plotter, AFAIK in the USA detailed vector charts are available for all water ways FOC, maybe have a look at the NOAA website or search the inet for NOAA vector charts . Such vector charts can be used with applications such as OpenCPN or even commercial chart plotters. I have no clue re iPad's, I have used the Navionics app on Android in the past and its great, but I only used it because I am not US based and vector charts here cost a bunch of money.
    Love the channel, thank you !!!! Greetings from Ireland

    Mr. Wizard... get rid of that old IPad and just use current edition of Navionics on your phone!!! You would have had to supply a hotspot through your phone to the old IPad anyway. When you can, upgrade to a Garmin Chartplotter as soon as u can! Not as expensive as you think and gives depth, speed and current location at all times. Good luck on the water...

    I think you are going to hate that cooler, it's thermoelectric so it is very inefficient and won't have a lot of cooling power. You might want to think about a more expensive compressor style one or a mini fridge.

    • @rl1958
      @rl1958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      agree, especially since it will be out in the sun. Best option is to replace the dead cabin fridge with a $99 walmart small fridge and a inverter to run it. He has plenty of battery power to keep it running for 2 days or more.
