In this week's video we (Tim and Sam) cruise our narrowboat from Gnosall to Market Drayton on the Shropshire Union Canal.
We even see a boat that went on sale for 500 quid. How much does boating cost? How cheaply can it be done?
We see some fantastic bridges and Tim walks under 2 aqueducts. We live, work and cruise on our narrowboat Mary L.

As a 71 year old USA retired immigrant living in Cambodia , I know narrowboat life is not a realistic possibility. But for some reason I’m very attracted to the whole thing.
Blacking the boat, heating options, navigating the locks, periodic maintenance, electrical options the River Trust etc . Not mention the slowed pace of living and a kinda reevaluation of what’s important . I’ve learned so much. I follow a few narrowboat vlogs. You two bring a nice addition and spirit to the genre.

Frozen pizza is a dream I have never had - ate once as a child then once at a friends home but I haven't been back near dinner time -
Ah yes, I was going to make that comment but forgot. When I was a kid EVERYTHING was painted battleship grey, or if it wasn't it hadn't been painted since 1939. Other features were what was made out of "parachute silk" (not silk at all, but coarse nylon). Everything from fences (by stretching it between posts) to knickers. Yes knickers, my aunt used to run them up on her sewing machine. They must have been incredibly uncomfortable to wear. The big powdered milk cartons (stout cardboard with tin top and bottom) were containers for everything. I reckon they'd have had to close all the primary schools if there were no powdered milk cartons!

I used to work for a manufacturing/distribution company in south Shropshire and their lorries/livery was Battleship grey and when i was a babe i had parachute silk dresses in the early 1960's. It's a curious fabric because whilst the threads in it are large like raw silk, it is quite soft - but sort of stiff - those knickers maybe rustled a bit!
@@MsVanorak I didn't know surplus "parachute silk" was still being put to such uses as late as the early 1960s, by which time I was a sophisticated man of the world (well, 18ish) who thought he knew everything. Obviously, I didn't!
There was certainly a lot of it about and, unlike the battleship grey paint, the uses to which it could be put required either ingenuity or craft or both, so I daresay it took longer to be used up than the grey paint, which was the ubiquitous decor of post-war austerity.
@@MartinJames389 i think my dresses would be hand-me-downs but they were pretty. i can remember mum kept them and they were white with hand embroidery on the yoke front. It was probably hard wearing and got softer with washing and people probably only stopped using it because it signified post war poverty.

Camping boats used to be quite common , and im surprised they aren't making a come back these days , easily trailable, able to utilise solar battery electric out boards,or petrol / oars whats not to like.

I suspect there are a lot of people living under the radar tramping on the canals, we do have a dire housing situation in the UK
as always a wonderful vlog. Some of those verdant canopies were breathtaking in their peacefulness ... i do wish you had stopped by the rope fender fellow for an interview and tour of the shop and maybe a demonstration of them working. Judging from Tim's gasp the River Tern must have been cold

Small boat; small problems. Insulate the cabin and as a single person you're very cosy. Everything is light and easy to handle. Mooring space is easy to find almost anywhere.

I don't think I could do live aboard with out a butty. Not enough storage for my tools, and projects, and stuff on just a NB. But IDK, I live in a 28' RV trailer, I got the most important stuff in there. One section of my NB would HAVE to be set up for woodworking/machining

Hello guys, thanks as always for your vlog. Regarding tiny boats, have a look at Wilderness Trailboats. These are mini canal boats, outboard motor on the back, easily towed on a trailer. But they have the facilities of a full size boat so you could even haul your little boat to the Canal du Midi say, and use it as a caravan on the way. A bit more comfortable than the example on your video, but also, a bit more than 500 quid to buy.

The green butty?....Fit a massive bed,a luxurious shower and a small kitchen with coolbox,microwave and coffee maker then hire it out on AIR B&B per night.Take it to London to sell it if the earlier comment go's belly up.

Although I love the sound of those old diesels that are in the middle of the boat, I cringe at the sight of that carcinogenic diesel exhaust smoke wafting back over the occupants at the stern of the narrow boat that you showed at the beginning of this video.
