- In this episode, Siskel and Ebert review: The Cable Guy, Stealing Beauty, Moll Flanders, Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D., Switchblade Sisters and Madame Butterfly.
Cable Guy rules.
I think it works more as just a dark comedy than an actual satire. For instance, that moment when the guy's cable goes out and he picks up a book is just an echo of that bit in The Simpsons when Itchy and Scratchy go off the air and all the kids run out into the street to play. I do like the interplay between the Menendez brother like trial of the twin Ben Stillers and the o.j. Simpson hysteria we had just gone through.
No, no it doesn't. 👎
Bless you for putting these old Siskel and Ebert and Ebert and Roeper episodes up. I used to get Eberts book every year and watch on syndication weekly.
6:57 Ebert being absolutely hilarious
I never knew that Siskel enjoyed The Cable Guy, he was truly a chad film enjoyer
I watched The Cable Guy on TV probably in 1998 and hated it. But that was almost certainly because I was only 12 years old and was just hopelessly confused by it.
Maybe it's finally time to go back to it.
I hated it too! Never liked either actor.
@@patrickc3419 I don't hate Jim Carrey. I thought he was pretty fine in his dramatic roles in Man on the Moon and The Truman Show.
@@AithlynC I feel exactly the same way, good in dramatic roles, Man on the Moon, Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine, most of his comedy films are like nails 💅 on a chalkboard, he tries way too hard.
Matthew Broderick getting tormented is always a plus
It's great because it happened often!
Super lousy actor.
To borrow from bad reviews on Yelp..If I could give The Cable Guy negative 5 stars, I would.
Ebert is so out of his depth re: Cable Guy.
Not really. His opinion is understandable. His point was that since Jim Carrey is an unlikeable, disturbed character the movie isn't very funny. It's just ends up being obnoxious.
If you listen, Ebert literally thought Jim Carey was supposed to be the protagonist and Matthew Broderick the antagonist
Poor Ebert, always thinking the main character has to be the protagonist
I felt the same after seeing it in the theater, but after seeing it a little more over the years I appreciate the way Carrey played the character, just soooo annoying that it cracked me up, we’ve all known people a little like that, but I still prefer his movies when we can be on his side.
@@clutchkman I knew that Broderick was the main character from the getgo. Carrey teeters on being a villain to the point where you know he has to be stopped but you still feel sorry enough for him that you don’t want him to die
Ebert...a light weight masquerading as an Everyman, and further diminished by being 'everyone's' teddy bear and believing that teddy bear is a real person.
His point was that since Jim Carrey is an unlikeable, disturbed character the movie isn't very funny. It's just ends up being obnoxious.
Of course, being Troma, Sgt. Kabukiman is SUPPOSED to be goofy and holy-sh_t! That IS all they do, right?
I think my problem with The Cable Guy is it is VERY over the top, even for a Jim Carrey film, and there was no real payoff. I think it's one of Carrey's least effective films.
And Stealing Beauty. I did see it once, probably because I had a bit of a crush at the time on Liv Tyler. Now, she just comes across as a plot device rather than an actual character - the pretty girl doing anything to get laid. I don't think I can appreciate the film now in a post-MeToo era, except as an opportunity to see early Liv Tyler.
But here's a bit of a weird thing: the plot is kind of an arthouse version of Bo Derek's later Bolero. Same idea, but it's far easier to watch Stealing Beauty than freaking Bolero. At least Liv Tyler can ACT. Then the Dereks seem to have taken the SAME concept and added a ghost (and Traitor Donnie), and bingo, you've got Ghosts Can't Do It. So, John Derek may have plagiarized Stealing Beauty TWICE! That's ... quite impressive, considering the Dereks' [lack of] skills at acting, directing, producing, and probably writing as well. So, credit where credit is due?
actually "Switchblade Sisters" is the only movie in this episode that i actually wanted to see, and i do not remember it at all. the only other one i saw was "Cable Guy" which i didnt really want to see and dont remember much about it either. but Cable Guy had two things going against it for me, i never liked Jim Carey and i never liked Mathew Broderick.
Cable is amazing. It’s the only film that acknowledges how annoying Carrey is
Agreed! Super annoyingly unfunny.
