- I was recently privileged to attend and be the only non-Malawian present at a ceremony of the Gule Wamkulu, a Nyau secret society of the Chewa people. This particular ceremony took place in the village of Kumisolo near the town of Salima not far from the shores of Lake Malawi. This video shows a small sample of the incredible dancing that took place at this ceremony, which was attended by nearly the entire village. The Gule Wamkulu dress as living or deceased humans or animals and the Nyau dancers attempt to communicate the messages of their ancestors to the villagers.
I spent several weeks in Santhe and was fortunate to have watched first hand. It was the true highlight of my trip to Malawi.
Brilliant Gule wankulu

Malawi is home of gule/nyau. I think there is a need to preserve these traditions. One may dispute that this is a dirty dance just because his/her values are daluted with western cultures which is somehow loss of identity. As Africans, let us all continue supporting our traditions so long as they don't infringe people's rights. This is only way will get respected from outside world.
How much must I pay to watch them
I agrer with you totally. African traditions are the best
I will only thanks
T have send my reply
What du I send again

this s composition could e the contribution to humanity from Malawi. The warm heart of African's, Malawian culturists keep it up, guys. Spirituality is different, spectacular, and AMAZINGLY brilliant!!!
Cool to see this, as I knew nothing about them. Some GW lived on the road up to Dedza Secondary school when I taught there years ago. One chased me up the road as I biked by one day, after which I always sped by. Lol.
My friend lived in Malawi for 3 years and used to mountain bike through the villages each weekend. He was chased by the Gule Wamkulu on multiple occasions. He said he was frightened the first time but got used to it eventually.
That's we call welcome to Malawi
@@sharingtheglobe Lol! Sorry but for some reason your comment is just hilarious! He probably thought that they were trying to kill him! Lol!

Thank you so much for the effort you took to preserve and celebrate these important traditions! May such informative and wisdom-spreading traditions not be lost in the centuries to come! Any chance you can translate/ tell us some of the info they were trying to impart in this specific event?
I unfortunately don't speak Chichewa, but maybe some native speakers can comment. From what they translated to me, each dance is a way of communicating with the ancestral world.
This will be a long explanation (though I will still brush over some things, otherwise to explain everything will be a book in itself), so bear with me. Am a Chewa myself and I am initiated. Gule wamkulu can be loosely transalated as "Big Dance", though in practice its more like a religion with secret societies and such. This big dance is performed during a variety of tribal activities which include but not limited to Death of a chief or an initiate, at the start of recruiting inititates, graduation of initiaties, ordination of a new chief, or any other major tribal event. The scale of these dances depends on the activity. The ceremonies can range from just a day to a few days of activities with 'Nyau' coming from distant localities. Every Nyau (thats what the dressed and masked 'animals' are called) represent a certain animal or plant. In that moment they embody the spirit of the animal or plant and 'behave' as such, which at times they can become quite dangerous. Really dangerous infact. In this video am not sure what the ceremony was because apart from the fact that the crowd is just way too small, I cant even see other ceremonial activities happening in the background. I suspect that this was a quick dance just put up for show for some tourists or such probably to make some money; because of the fact that many people are willing to pay to see these ceremonies in person, some hastily put up dances are organised to offer some intertainent and make alittle money in the process.
Am in ❤ with this Contry ❤❤❤❤

I'm from Zimbabwe I really like nyau
I'd love to catch a Nyau show in Zimbabwe sometime too! I've only been to Vic Falls there, but had a good time, very nice people.
@@sharingtheglobe That's true .they very friendly and humble
Yeah but in Zimbabwe we call them Mazvigure/Zvigure. I don't know why tho....

There is less written about this rich cultural. How I wish alot can be done.
Father Boucher of Kungoni Arts published a book, titled When animals dance and spirits dance: The big dance of the Chewa.....It documents everything about the nyau.
Thats my favourite
Proudly african
there is a very poor coordination between the sound from the drums and the movements of the makishi...
Watching from mzuzu
Let's make it happen
Thank you for sharing but why is it a secret society when they are dancing in front of people.....am I missing something?☺️
It was secret for many years to avoid colonial powers from shutting it down. It's now more open...but still a secret society similar to how the Masons are secret as well.
Its secret because its organised in secret in mostly
Graveyards also Gule wankulu is a spirit dance the songs are
Mostly about the praisings of the dead or death.
I think the performer are anonymous.
Thank you very much chisakano mama mukokeada
I like nyau dance

Can someone explain the white decoration and what that color means to the tribe and what the mask of the dancer in white symbolizes?
they are called Nyau if you see one run THEY RUN FAST
What are the dancers with masks called and what are their origin? I’m American and i don’t understand i was at but scared at first but it’s beautiful
They are the Gule Wamkulu, a secret society of the Chewa people in Malawi. The dances were indeed beautiful and fascinating and are meant to be a way to communicate with ancestors.
Its Malawian popular dance part of our culture called nyau
My father used to take my brother to Nyawo becoz he's a Chewa n my mom didn't know that my father always go with my brother lol my brother started telling my mummy wht was happening there hahahaha after that my father stopped taking him there n my mummy didn't like that we we're laughing

Boa tarde Michel Noel Onde que você mora você o autor desse vídeo é você que está que é dono do canal Você mora aonde você é brasileiro não sim ou não Que absurdo
I think you mean non native African? I have attended quite a few of this and I'm not Malawian
According to the elders there that day it was only Malawians from that village and two others from Lilongwe attending. That said, I'm sure other Gule Wamkulu ceremonies attract people from other countries in Africa as well.
The last one is great bababoon
Big up guys

You really believe that Africans don't know how to drum? The drumming is exactly how they want it to be.

This tradition/culture should be filmed and preserved in a museum, then abandoned completely. It makes people behave like wild animals.
