In American foods, there's a lot of plastic, therefore it's normal that you thought that there was plastic in your ice cream. However, "Maraş Ice Cream" is little different from western-style ice-creams. Traditional Turkish Maraş ice cream is sweet, creamy, stretchy, and chewy at the same time. This stretchy texture is thanks to the inclusion of a starchy root of wild orchids called salep (and on some occasions the resin of the mastic tree). The special type of powdered orchid bulbs are endemic to the Maraş region of Turkey and: therefore, called traditional Turkish ice cream, made centuries ago in this city.
