I prefer carpenters pencils and I recently found a sharpener for them at home depot. It's funny how out the thousands of dollars in tools I have, I was the most excited about this 99¢ sharpener. It's the little things in life lol
I got a dewalt razorknife and it has a cool thing where when there is no blade in it and you extend, retract, and extend, it reloads the next newest blade in the tank. So if my blade is covered in gunk I either spin it around, or if its no good, retract and get a new one in a second, brand new blade for sharpening pencils like needles. When you get a tar covered blade on a retract, time to reload the knife.
I’ve used pencil pullers, my experience with them, they tend to fall out or the rubber grip will tear. I like the idea so much that I stead buy badge pullers that have the key rings. Drill a hole into pencil and now I have even better retractable pencil holder.
When sharpening a carpenter's pencil, try cutting the narrow ends first! This narrows the sides, so that when you cut the wide end, you're less likely to break the carbon. (2:23)
One of my favorite things with these is that you can use em for standard sized sharpies as well. Always have one on my hi-viz vest. Probably the best two or three bucks I've ever spent. Great gifts for fellow tradesmen as well!
I exclusively use the simple BIC mechanical pencils. Really easily to “sharpen” one handed and get a sharp point. Stays behind your ear, has a little clip in case you have safety glasses on... It's three times fatter than a Ticonderoga #2 so it doesn't ever get broken if it gets dumped in my tool bag and it's easy to sharpen because each one comes with a sharpener for it's fatter size. Because I often do exposed pipe work I prefer the #2 because any marks I make are easily taken off. Been using them for years and even hand them out to my crew with the admonishment that Sharpie marks are for marking cuts and pencil marks are for bends. I've tried the retractable pencil doohickey but having a pencil swinging around will get caught in T-grid and other things in some of the spaces where I have to work. Because I wear a hard hat I use a snap-in 'MC' strap for steel studs that I can clip to the brim and keep my pencil there. I also use another clip for my sharpie and for my terminator screwdriver (The tiny one) for when I do control work on machinery. The clips can be used so you can have a pencil just under the brim edge and a sharpie just over the top of the edge on the same side of your hard hat. I also use a Glazier's pouch in my belt... it's a small pouch they use for their glass cutting tools with three small sections for my punch, pen and another terminator or Sharpie (Sharpies take some breaking in to fit but it's worth it in my book)

YO VINCE, I HAVE SEEN THIS PRODUCT A MILLION TIMES AND NEVER BOUGHT ONE... BUT JUST BECAUSE YOU PUT IT ON YOUR COLLAR IN THIS VIDEO & SHOWED ME HOW CONVENIENT IT IS... I'M GOING TO HOME DEPOT TODAY AND I'M GETTING AT LEAST 5 JUST FOR BACKUP REASONS & I'M GOING TO GET THAT PENCIL.
I love to use that drill attachment, I use it on the orange flat Home Depot pencils. I just don't have the skill to get a good sharp point with a knife, when in 2 seconds flat I get an acceptable point with the yellow drill adapter.
Here's a tip for sharpening pencils, especially flat carpenter pencils, rough cut it with your knife then sand, grind, or file it to a sharp finished point. Saved me a whole lot of lead and time. Also with a no.2 pencil i was taught if i was marking long lines to "sweep/lean" the pencil back and "barrel roll/spin" the pencil while you're marking will help keep it sharper longer.
I use carpenters pencil for roughf framing only....and #2pencil for finish only. Also i sharpen all of them on my bench grinder 5 or 6 at a time and have sharp ones all day for couple days then repeat. Dont lose near as much material by chunking huge shavings with a knife, half the time breaking the lead just to have to remove more. Precise, easy to control, and can get whatever point i want. I do #2s round and keep the carpenters pencils flat so the lead last a lot longer.
1:50 In Korea, I can never find these wonderful and useful things ... I really like it. If it starts to sell in Korea, I think I will buy it as soon as I release it.👏👏👏
A guy told me years ago if you lose something, IE pencils, tape measure, utility knife, excetera usually look around waist-high for anything missing. As humans we are naturally lazy and put things waist level so we will not have to bend over to set them down! It works
Vince there's a new pencil sharpener at Home Depot that sharpens carpenter pencils by using your drill/driver and a screw driver bit. You push your bit into one end and insert the pencil in the other end and start the drill. Makes a nice sharp pencil. If you can find them $2.99, They sell out quickly.
I got myself a Pica marker, the holster helps me keep track of it, got an in built sharpener just for a nice fine tip, no Stanley blade needed, and you can get different colour leads for marking different surfaces
Those pencil pulls are great! I’ve bought them for a few helpers we’ve had before. But I wish they would work with a mechanical style drafting pencil and not just the carpenter style.
I work with volunteers mostly, H4H, RTR etc. I keep a dozen or so sharpened carpenters pencils in my toolbox. It’s like #25 torx bits, something you know you need for decking and wheelchair ramps, but Joe doesn’t bring it with them.
Oh my God Vince I loved the pencil video that was awesome brother. It brought back so many memories back in the day. I started wearing a tool vest because it was the most comfortable fastest method of storing my pencil there right at the top of your vest and you always had multiple pencils and yes I was always giving them away but always had enough just in case LOL
@@VCGConstruction No I do not have a Atlas but I do like them.Mine is a little lighter version and it's called Bjornklader. I have been using them for around 10 years they are awesome and only around $100 compared to the atlas in price
Have a pencil pull on my belt! ALWAYS. good addition. Doesn’t like getting beaten up much wish they would make them a little beefier but it does the job. Also a metal scribe is useful for marking punching metal or I’ve seen some smack it into lumber with their chalk line on the end for a quick chalking.
Always been a fan of the carpenters pencil. They fit good under your skull guard. I always liked him because nobody else did and I knew nobody would steal them.
Great energy man. Enjoyed it. Subbed. I confess i have had to ask my helper for his pencil several times lol. But hey, its all my stuff he's using haha. But point well taken. Nice video.

@@pingpongstar11 Really! What's gonna break first on this style pencil holder. The retractable string, the spring or magnetism, no moving parts. Come on!
I have a RotRing Rapid Pro in .5, .7, and 2mm. Got a "Trekker Pen" by "Rite in the Rain" that stays on my "KeyBak", so 💯 on the pencil pull. lol. I live in my Duluth pants, decked out in a bajillion pockets. Has nice pencil holders. My storage clipboard has a red and black lead "Rite in the Rain" mechanical pencil as well; stays in my truck. Never understood the use or purpose of carpenter pencils. Got myself a Swanson Savage always sharp with my lighted level, I find it kinda annoying for fine marking, gotta tilt it a lot.
That pencil pull is a good idea. I stick mine in the band of my hard hat in front of my ear. Gonna have to get me a pencil pull though cause I still have the habit of forgetting to put it back in my hard hat.
Vince you are awesome and entertaining. Thanks for taking the time to respond to me on the dewalt magnetic bit accessory I misplaced. I ended up buying a new one and it's awesome. Thanks for that. I have most of those pencils myself (I do woodworking and I studied architecture in college). Now I'm a college professor and I require my students to always carry a pen and pocket notebook. I have a similar lecture as this video on being prepared and writing things down.
@@VCGConstruction I don't record a lot of the small ones. I have a bunch I did on my other channel I issue for my students. It's not as cool as yours though in terms of quick editing, voice inflection and pacing. I really love how you modulate your voice, it's fantastic. It punches ideas/points with energy and then brings the conversation back down to "just me and you taking here". Very well done, you should consider teaching. My stuff i record is a little dry (by design, gotta be a professor and all that). My ones i don't record are less precessional (no evidence lol) . However I probably should record the one on carrying the notepad and pen. Side note: I think will use your videos as an example of how to get people to listen when you present things. I do a bunch of talks on that as well. I use to use Billy Mays from oxyclean (entertaining = holds your attention), i still do sometimes but it's a shame he passed. Funny thing with the pen and notepad: I will sometimes even challenge them when they screw up. If they can look though their notes and prove me wrong ("You said this on Wednesday at 4pm...") I will back down and even apologize. It's a great lesson and I welcome being proven wrong. I'm like you, if a student is broke but trying trying hard I will occasionally buy a pocket notebook and pen for them as a gift. Ok I'm rambling lol. I'll check my videos and see if there is something interesting for outside the classroom. If there is I will point you to it. :)
Hard lessons are learned are valuable but when it comes to drinking ng water, it's a little hardcore to deny someone. Obviously if they show up everyday without water it's an issue but some new guy shows up first day and doesn't bring water, give the man some water. I would have walked off site to go get some water. Fire me and I'll just go get another job. :) Most big GC's have zero loyalty so it's not like the job was secured anyhow.
I was using that pencil pull years ago. Good idea, cheap indeed but doesn't last longer than couple of weeks. The line worn out quickly. Once it breaks you cannot fix it.
I usually wear a ball cap, and tuck my pencil into the snapback. This keeps it where I can remember it, doesn't break off in my apron or back pocket, etc.
Great video. The pencil on a retractor is the best idea. I know shop aprons have a pencil pocket but (as a hobbyist) I tend to put my pencil down on a work surface and walk away. I don't have the retractor so as an experiment I drilled a hole through the pencil near the eraser. I ran a string loop through the hole and I wear it like a necklace. I haven't trained my brain yet that it is on the loop so I'm still looking for a pencil but after a few seconds my brain reminds me it's around my neck. Then I say "duh". It's the greatest thing. Since it hangs low, unlike the retractable, I slip it in a pocket. Thanks. I tried the carpenters pencil from Lowes, but I found the lead did not tolerate the sharpener. It fractured easily. Maybe a bad batch. So I use a No 2 good quality standard type.
Haha I always keep a 24 pack of water bottles on my sites. Always offer them to the subs, especially my floor sander who works like a demon, sweats a ton but only ever brings a can of coke. Nothing slows a worker down like even slightest dehydration. I had a gym trainer who had set the training programs for gold medal winning Olympic canoeists, he told me that 2% loss in water equals about 20% loss in physical performance. Keeping them hydrated pays YOU!
Preaching the words of my woods teacher. I always come prepared with water, food, pencils and adult videos. Lol but yeah I always have multiple pencils a Spyderco Knife water and even my tape measure.
You missed one my friend! I'm one of those who goes #2 for teamwork, and yeah, it will stay behind your ear- for a while. However, a SHORT#2 will stay there all day, so cutting it in half gives you 2, and I pick up the stubbies the others throw away - a free new pencil to me!
Hi, luv the videos...but, would have liked to heard about the dimensions of the carpenters (1/2” wide and 1/4” deep) that’s useful information also sharpening on the bias is an alternative tip....also useful thanks
When I was younger I worked for a roofing and painting contractor. He was always asking me for pencils, utility knifes, hammer, etc. The guy would either leave everything in the truck or drop things off the roof and lose it. He needed one of those things for every tool he should of had with him.
That's right. In my younger years, I went through that same type of lesson learning. I did too, at some point showed up without water to a jobsite.. on a dang hot summer day in Texas, Lesson learned! I will probably stop by HomeDepot next week. Closest one here is about 70 miles. I have a few tools to pick up, including that pencil, and a Milwaukee Fan, maybe two.. How good does an HD12.0 battery fits on it?
Gotta love it when people make fun of you for having a smart solution. It's like someone making fun of you for using a breaker bar on a bolt instead of all your might on a wrench. One of us will be less sore at the end of the day, and the other will be like RB!
@John Prater Another perfect example. I just made a TikTok video of all things showing a trick to pull a ball joint stud using the control arm as a lever and the suspension force to pop it. I got like 100 comments of people saying to use a hammer, a pickle fork, or an air hammer. Obviously I made the video so you could save the effort of hammering or for people who don't have the tools. All these superior know-it-alls who don't even understand that my method takes less effort and is for especially rusty cases where you might end up hammering for 20 minutes, or just for home gamers. Ridiculous. Do you want to know the method that is free and you can do anywhere? No, make sure you have a $150 air hammer with a fork on it.
The pencil pull is a great thing. The guys at the firehouse would laugh at me because every time I would turn around I couldn't find my damn pencil. Wasted too much time looking for it. After getting the pull it never happened again, except for that awkward time that you forgot you had it on the pull.

Nice TJ!!
Thank you for this, my mum bought me a similar one and i spent hours trying to figure out what it did.
I like these short tips and tricks videos. Thanks @VCG Construction!!! 😁 God bless.
Thanks Me Again we appreciate that and we appreciate all the blessings we have every day!! To you as well!!
Just started in the trades and this simple trick has gotten rid of my pencil loosing woes. Thanks Vince 🙂
Very nice tips 👍👍
Thank you!!
I love to use that drill attachment, I use it on the orange flat Home Depot pencils. I just don't have the skill to get a good sharp point with a knife, when in 2 seconds flat I get an acceptable point with the yellow drill adapter.
You can't sharpen a pencil with a knife.I hope your not a carpenter
If it starts to sell in Korea, I think I will buy it as soon as I release it.👏👏👏
TGC - Trucking Game Channel which one? A pencil sharpener or an impact driver? 😂
Yeah that’s pretty cool didn’t know about the pencils getting one tomorrow
Awesome Terrance thanks!!
Lol so funny I did the same thing a while ago and I love it. The only thing I modified was removing the yellow clip for better rubber grip.
Thats a good idea!
Carpenter pencils are also designed specifically for scrib at 1/4"to 1/2"
Just bought one last week from menards! Can’t wait to use it for my theatre set builds!
Let me know how you like it!!
OMG that pencil pull is awesome. Hell I'm remodeling my bathroom and lose my pencil in a 5'x7' room.
🤣🤣
What a likable guy!👍
Thank you for the kind words Cesar Ramirez! Thank you for being here!
Ya I use it too.and yes they call me nerdy but behind my back lol.great video
Thanks Doug!!
Lol. That’s where I put my Milwaukee marker on my shirt , sweatshirt or jacket ... but now I want that retractor!
Those pencil pulls are great! I’ve bought them for a few helpers we’ve had before. But I wish they would work with a mechanical style drafting pencil and not just the carpenter style.

8099246900 contact number jisko pencil job ka kam chahie is par call karo
I work with volunteers mostly, H4H, RTR etc. I keep a dozen or so sharpened carpenters pencils in my toolbox. It’s like #25 torx bits, something you know you need for decking and wheelchair ramps, but Joe doesn’t bring it with them.
I use my plumber's crack as my pencil holder . No-one ever ask to borrow my pencil!
Shit. That was you?!?!
I love the tool vest as well cuz!! You have the Atlas?
@@VCGConstruction No I do not have a Atlas but I do like them.Mine is a little lighter version and it's called Bjornklader. I have been using them for around 10 years they are awesome and only around $100 compared to the atlas in price
I’ll check it out cuz thanks!!
You have the best show and helpful you r #1 thanks for all your hard work 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Thanks William !!
The sharpener on the drill. Frigging love that
Always been a fan of the carpenters pencil. They fit good under your skull guard. I always liked him because nobody else did and I knew nobody would steal them.
🤣🤣👍🏻
VCG Construction also what happened to 47k. Wednesday was 46k and 48k today BAM mind blown 🤯
Great energy man. Enjoyed it. Subbed. I confess i have had to ask my helper for his pencil several times lol. But hey, its all my stuff he's using haha. But point well taken. Nice video.
I like the magnetic "Quick Snap" by Magnogrip. No strings on me, lol.
Haven't lost a pencil yet after a year of losing pencils every month.💯
Plus magnets dont break!
Magnets definitely break.
@@pingpongstar11 Really! What's gonna break first on this style pencil holder. The retractable string, the spring or magnetism, no moving parts. Come on!
Just found this channel & I’m feeling an ultra delco vibe. Subscribed.
Welcome to the gang Spencer!
I'm retired from the trades but I still carry a utility knife, a sleeve of blades, a ball point pen and a Carpenter's pencil!
Always prepared cuz!!
@@VCGConstruction I love the Milwaukee folding utility that opens one handed! Made for electricians, it has a notch for stripping wire insulation.
The fastback?
@@VCGConstruction yes. I had to look!
Wow!!!! Had to comment on this. The drill sharpening is genius!!!!!
Been using one for a couple of years I love it lol
Love these, seen at Lowes and was mind blown, now have several as well.
Wish they made them a little bit better though.
That pencil pull is a good idea. I stick mine in the band of my hard hat in front of my ear. Gonna have to get me a pencil pull though cause I still have the habit of forgetting to put it back in my hard hat.
Try it out!!
Really, is it online anywhere? I’d like to hear it!
:)
This guy is awesome made my day and learned a few things. Thanks man, Subscribed for sure.
Thanks Michael!!
I vouch for the pencil pull! Nerdy or not, it's super convenient.
I was using that pencil pull years ago. Good idea, cheap indeed but doesn't last longer than couple of weeks. The line worn out quickly. Once it breaks you cannot fix it.
The excitement on your face when “ and out comes a new tip “ is great hehe
I usually wear a ball cap, and tuck my pencil into the snapback. This keeps it where I can remember it, doesn't break off in my apron or back pocket, etc.
Awesome video man. A lot of truth and helpful advice.
Im using the sharpdraw, only thing is you gotta glue the removable clip, it falls out easy. Other then that, it’s not bad.
👍🏻
just got a OX pencil from Lowe's, it's similar to Pica pencil. These pencils are game changer.
Wow awesome fact!
We can do a separate video for just the carpenter pencil if you like?
VCG Construction yes plz
I had a similar setup with my roll of painter's tape when I was in the sign business. I always had my tape and nobody could walk away with it. 😆
When I was younger I worked for a roofing and painting contractor. He was always asking me for pencils, utility knifes, hammer, etc. The guy would either leave everything in the truck or drop things off the roof and lose it. He needed one of those things for every tool he should of had with him.
Thanks for the tip videos, as a DIYer I always learn something
It been a long time since I seen a pencil pull. I think some people I know need them badly. Thanks for the video.
I agree, might be easier for you to hand them out!! 🤣🤣
Sort of I have them replace it when they loose it. It might save them some money. Lol.
He really likes to pull his pencil
Cool, love the pencil pull!
Thanks Smoking we appreciate it!!
Nice vid.
My first view. New sub.
That’s the truth 802 !!
That’s funny Chris!!
