'The Lancaster Experience' At Duxford 2016

Time for a visit to Duxford - Wednesday 3rd August sees me here for when they open up the rear fuselage for public viewing....prior to this, we have an informative talk from a re-enactor. This is a Canadian Avro Lancaster Mk. X KB889 NA-I Built at Victory Aircraft, Malton Ontario. It was presented to IWM Duxford in 1986.

Thank you for a great tour of the Lancaster. As an Aussie, Dads best mate Barney Black was a tail gunner in the Lancaster and he came home again in one piece. Gone now of coarse but a great bloke.

One of the better presentations given to help us understand the Bomber Command aircrew and challenges these young men were given. Of particular interest that initially caught my attention was the Lanc's squadron designation of NA I. This designation was one removed from my father's Halifax aircraft of 'J - Jonny' of 428 Ghost Squadron at Middleton-St-George. My father was a tail gunner and although he liked the Lancaster that was coming on strength during his second tour, he felt the Hally was a better aircraft to escape from. Given the survivability of tail gunners, my existence is something of a miracle.

Douglas Ker Lol Douglas! Yes the Halifax was definitely an easier aircraft to escape from, according to testimony from the veterans that I’ve listened to. This Lancaster is of course KB889 which I a Canadian-built Mk. X...thank you for watching and commenting.

My mum was in the W.R.A.F and died in september 2019, aged 95! her brother and my dads brother either flew or flew in Wimpys Wellingtons! One died on his first raid a 1000 bomber raid! The other in the end died of Cancer, my mums brother! That Uncle told me what it was like back then! We cannot thank those people enough to give us the safety we now have to watch these clips! R.I.P all of the brave souls back then! Sigh :(

It would, but you have to appreciate that most people of such age today are more interested in social media and Love Island etc. Many re-enactors give up their spare time as unpaid volunteers allowing the public such as you and I to enjoy such video and photographic events…

My understanding was that this aircraft was assigned to 428 Squadron. My father was a wireless mechanic on 428 Squadron. I wonder if he did any repairs to this aircraft.

Randy Southall Quite possibly - 428 ‘Ghost’ were at RAF Dalton initially before moving to Middleton St. George in June 1943.....

What he didn't point out is that many crews didn't get their six month break and were shuffled back to squadrons to make up for losses after a couple of months.

Thank you for mentioning Mynarski in your speech about the lancasters. Canada has a Heritage moment about him too. It was really interesting seeing inside the lanc. Did they take out some equipment or was the space across always that large?
