When mention is made of Mansa Musa's wealth, people generally think of the gold only. Only a few also think of the salt which was almost as important as the gold. Even fewer people think of the books of Timbuktu, Djene, etc. Books also consisted of a huge wealth! People bought books a lot. Also, we must not forget that Mansa Musa controlled most of West Africa and its resources. So, the bronze, copper, silver etc. were also his. In addition, there were many livestock (dromadaries / Camels, horses, donkey, cows, sheep, goats, chiken, Guinea fowls, etc. It would be very difficult to know the exact extent of Musa's wealth. Before industrial mining came, traditional gold mining has always brought tons of gold to Mali. Even today, traditional gold mining alone amounts to any amount between 4 and 15 tons of gold for present day Mali alone. Combined with industrial mining, it amounts to about 70 tons on an annual basis now. Mansa Musa's gold minies did not include only those on the present day territory of Mali. Mansa Musa's Mali included southern Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Ginea Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger. Some of the traditional gold mining cites are on the territories of Mauritania, Senegal and Guinea Conakry today. It must be also remembered that the decision to make mining output the property of king predates Mansa Musa for centuries. By the end of the 600s, the King of Ouagadou was Kayamakan Cissé. It is he who decreted that all gold and other minerals belonged to the King. He amassed a lot of gold, levied and trained a huge and professional army and invaded the other surrounding kingdoms, which included Mali, Sosso, Thakrur, Audagost. He then declared himself Ghana, meaning the conqueror. As he united all the kingdoms into one big empire, people started calling it the empire of Ghana. When Sundiata became King of Mali by 1235, Ghana had shrunk back to the Kingdom of Ouagadou, which covers areas of southern Mauritania, Mali and Senegal today. The capital city of Ouagadou was Kumbi Saleh. It is on the territory of present day Mauritania. Sundiata also conquered back all the territory of the Ghana empire and added many new territories to make the Mali empire. The tradion of declaring the King as owner of the mines and mining output continued.

Actually, the loss of wealth was NOT colonialism. Mansa Musa became wealthy by selling slaves to Arabs (this was before Europeans bought slaves). So, no. Not colonialism, rather the after-effects of the elimination of Arab slave trading.

Europe was simply not "in darkness" in the 1300s. In the 800s? Yes. 900s? Yes. 1000s? Debatable, but probably yes. The 1300s? No. This was the cusp of the Renaissance, and much of the revitalization of European culture was already occurring.

@Vladimir makarov China has invaded Vietnam, Korea, and Tibet, just to name a few, Russia repeatedly invaded Turkey, took over all of Siberia, invaded Korea and Manchuria, Finland, basically all of Eastern Europe, Canada was created from the North American territory the British and French invaded (and even after that, Canada has participated in numerous other invasions, such as D-Day, and even made a small scale invasion of Serbia during the Yugoslav civil war), Brazil invaded Paraguay in the Paraguayan war and, when it was still part of the Portuguese Empire, helped invade almost all of South America, Ancient Algeria invaded Numidia, and throughout all of it's history, various groups have invaded Algeria and just become the new Algeria, Same with Libya and Sudan, though Sudan invaded Anjouan as recently as 2008, and the Khazaks invaded and genocided all of the people living in what would today be considered Khazakstan, and also helped in basically every Soviet invasion, such as that of Finland. Basically, every nation that is large got large by invading people. Even those who haven't performed invasions as a modern state still invaded the people who lived in their land before them.

I'm gonna teach you Americans because I see many dumbs comments : - Yes Mansa Musa had slaves but he was not a slave trader. He was rich because he had gold under his feet. - However some Malians may have sold slaves to the Arabs/Berber of North Africa. - Mali Empire was not destroyed by the Europeans, the Songhais (another Black African ethnic groups who were part of Mali Empire took control of Mali Empire at the end of 15th century). Then the Songhai Empire went to war with the Saadi Dynasty (Arabs/Berbers) of North Africa and they lost it in 1591 -> End of the Songhai Empire. The Saadis didnt stay long in West Africa but West Africa will never be unified in this way after that. So it was the return of smal kingdoms (Bambara, Mossi, Fulani, Wolof, Soninke, Hausa, etc...) - So when the Europeans (French) came to the lands of Mali in the 19th century, they attacked many kingdoms but it was not Mali Empire (Toucouleur Empire, Fulani states, Wassoulou Empire etc...)

dadondutta well schools can't really teach everything. You wouldn't learn anything from this either which is why we don't learn about every billionaire that has ever lived. Also schools leave a lot of history out simply because they can't focus on every single thing that happened on each country around the world. Your school might have been terrible or you just skipped a whole week of school because I remember this from 7th grade and I'm in college now.
How much of the country you come from do you think the average West African kid learns in school? All countries have a wast, interesting history. I‘ve never heard anything about Thai, Ethiopian or Central American history in school, and no one was trying to hide anything, you focus on the stuff that mattered in the region you‘re from.
You could spend your entire school career learning about the past, and still not scratch the surface. You'd also have very little time for anything else. It's not funny, it's by design. If this kind of thing interests you, then you should find out about it yourself.

Just imagine: He did not only inspire the writters of Disney's Aladin for the "Prince Ali" scene - He is probably the reason why the Europeans believed that there must be tons of gold outside of Europe. @@matthiasmoser6096 They would have colonized regardless? Had Africa been pushed to industrialize first the world would have had Africam Colonizers because it was free money. Greed is a huge motivator and when resistance small and riches large bet people will abuse it. My favorite example of something like this is when people noticed a small bit of International Sea that was surrounded by Russian Sea due to a loophole in how marine territory was split up. Since many nations could go their and fish without care for overfishing since it wouldn't effect their fish populations in the long term the small hole of International water was filled with ships from many nations fishing to their hearts content since it was full of fish and easy to access. Thw proverbial hole has since been plugged but the Greed present that lead many people to exploit something that harms others but benefits them is a tale as old as time.
@@IC-23 I get what you mean, but I believe that you misunderstood my comment: Oversea colonization and naval exploration missions have always been very expensive and they rarely payed off. This is why most antient superpowers (Egypt, China, India, Persia, Mali, etc.) never cared about it. And Europe could barely afford it, since plagues, unfavorable earth and numerous conflics hold Europe back. But the myth of gold and spices motivated European monarchs to invest into oversea missions. The profit of these oversea missions made economists overtake the nobility in terms of power and riches. Also, crops from the New World improved European harvests. These were two necessary step for inudstrialization, in my opinion. Naturally, in the end, this process made Europe so powerful, that nothing could stop the greed of European empires. I guess, this is exactly the point you were refering to. : )

Why are we all talking about "Africa" as if it's one little country? Even at its height, the Mali Empire only ruled over a small fraction of Africans. There is no "real Africa". It's so diverse that you can't just homogenise it like that. It would be like looking at France at its height under Louis XIV and saying "that's the real Europe". What does that even mean?

I teach 7th grade world history in California. I teach about Mansa Musa. This video offers my students a view of an important historical figure, with the emphasis on historical. All history ,and historical figures, is interpretive - even Bill Gates. You all view history as a pulpit to bash the opposing view. I see it as an opportunity to open the minds of my students to the larger world. Regardless of the true amount of his worth, he influenced history, greatly, in his time. That is why he is in the video and we are not.
The thing that bothers me is that most of us know who mansa musa was, but we do not have that same recognition with his older brother Muhammad keita, for those who don’t know, Muhammad was musa’s older brother, who was mansa after him, Muhammad Keita is legendary since he wanted to know what lay behind the vast Atlantic Ocean, so he prepared a fleet of 200 ships which had people with different talents, and they also brought food rations that would last for 2 years, however, only one ship and its captain came back, the captain told Muhammad that the other ships were sunk by a powerful current, so he turned around and went home, but the brave king, still eager to discover the new world, prepared a second fleet, this one having 1000 boats, each with a set of captains, generals, craftspeople, artists, sculptors, merchants, scholars, and religious leaders, and most importantly, the king himself would go, in a massive boat where a throne was created for him, and each boat would carry a massive amount of gold, salt, and copper, before this voyage, muhammad made musa the regnant until he came back, and so, the king set sail, ready to discover whatever he would find. Never to be seen again.

Angelo Stevens How do you know they were slaves? I have actually read books on the Mali Empire and the miners were not slaves. Do show me a source other than stormfront or some other white supremacist site that states otherwise. Anyway you are acting like everyone else was really peaceful at that time. Europe was in constant warfare. Genghis Kahn and the Mongols were lording it over Asia and parts of Europe. 25 percent of the Roman Empire were slaves but people still celebrate the Caesars.
Angelo Stevens You made the point that the miners were slaves when they clearly were not. So you just made that up. I recommend you read Mansu Musa and the Mali Empire if you want to actually read the truth. Slavery is part of almost every Ancient or middle age civilisation. So if you have a problem with the Mali Empire you must also have a problem with Rome and every European civilisation. Second point slavery wasn't always the same in every civilisation. Not to condone it but many African civilisations slavery was similar to indentured servitude. It had a period and you had laws on how to treat your slaves. So if you are compering it as I presume to slavery in the new world it probably was likely better. The fact that it is mainly white supremacists bringing this up yet I bet you don't go on Asian European native American etc talking about slavery. You sound like one of those people who say Africans were doing it as well whenever slavery is mentioned.

In all seriousness, I actually do consider myself richer than even the richest kings of the past. Although I'm not wealthy by modern standards, I do live in a developed nation where life is relatively easy and the quality of living is quite high or even luxurious. Consider this. Mansa Musa never had access to antibiotics or vaccines. He never had access to modern dental care. He had no modern anesthetics, no way to fix cavities, no way to replace lost teeth with stronger ones. He didn't have eye care to correct his vision as he got older. He didn't drink pure and treated water. He couldn't travel from one end of the Earth to the other in less than a single day. He didn't have the fascinating knowledge we now possess about physics, biology, and astronomy. He didn't know about the origins of life and mankind, about the Big Bang, about evolution. He didn't know that we all came from stars and that the universe is far bigger than any of us could ever hope to imagine. Things are all things which I personally feel make me a "rich" person compared to kings of the past. I honestly wouldn't trade places with any king prior to the modern/digital age.
+ChillyCloth If I am, indeed, the product of industrialization that the "pyramid scheme" is trying to create (not sure what that means), then I must confess that I wouldn't have it any other way. I quite enjoy having the longer and healthier life made possible by modern medicine and public sanitation, which are strictly regulated by the developed country I'm living in. I cherish living in an age where vast libraries of information lie within a few clicks of a button, where humanity's greatest knowledge and best understanding of science, philosophy, the universe, and even life itself are at my disposal within the reaches of my fingertips. I am grateful for the ability to experience all kinds of music from many different eras and cultures all over the world. I value my freedom to travel and experience all the world has to offer -- sports, adventure, tourism, movies, concerts, or even just a simple walk at the beach. If you can think of a better lifestyle which is feasible for someone of my humble standing to live, I'm all ears.
Already knew about Mansa Musa before this. I've also read in many sources that he was very well liked by his people. He is said to be very fair and every morning he would roam the streets giving out hand sized nuggets to his people. He also punished his government if they were unfair (such as the leader of a state or city etc.). Also after his death his empire collapsed and split apart and a huge money gamble came into play - with more than half of it being lost. He became very rich as a result of having lots of resources. He had more than 75% of all the known salt in the world and he had many mines - all protected by the army. He also had many trade routes and allowed traders trading with his empire (or coming through - which he allowed) to stop and stay a few nights in a now-a-day 5* hotel.
In the grand scale of things, it makes sense that every race has a few thousand years of dominance. Black people reigned supreme with ancient African civilizations such as Egypt and Mali and brought some of the earliest forms of mathematics, alchemy and astronomy to the world. There were thousands of years where Chinese civilizations exceeded the standards of other nations around the world. Arabs nations such as the Ottoman empire and Persian empire also had their legacy, and now Europeans are having their few thousand years of dominance until it is time for the next group of people to have a ruling grasp. It is all a cycle or power, try not to get caught up in race wars of the current day, i'm sure of you look into history, your people had their day in the sun

So it was the return of smal kingdoms (Bambara, Mossi, Fulani, Wolof, Soninke, Hausa, etc...)
- So when the Europeans (French) came to the lands of Mali in the 19th century, they attacked many kingdoms but it was not Mali Empire (Toucouleur Empire, Fulani states, Wassoulou Empire etc...)

Since many nations could go their and fish without care for overfishing since it wouldn't effect their fish populations in the long term the small hole of International water was filled with ships from many nations fishing to their hearts content since it was full of fish and easy to access. Oversea colonization and naval exploration missions have always been very expensive and they rarely payed off.
The profit of these oversea missions made economists overtake the
nobility in terms of power and riches. Also, crops from the New World improved European harvests. These were two necessary step for inudstrialization, in my opinion.
Naturally, in the end, this process made Europe so powerful, that nothing could stop the greed of European empires.

You did your research. Well done!
disney movie material, the old king set sail for a new world never to be seen again and it is up for the protagonist to find out where they went
I think they made it to South America. I did a participation seminar about Race and Memory in memorials, and part of my research and curriculum is about this story.
That's not his brother but instead Al Malik Al Nazir which is the eighth king of mali
one must admire this man, he had so much wealth and used it for the greater good
"One of the wealthiest?" He was/is the wealthiest in history.

Watch out, Hollywood is going to make a movie of this with a all white cast.
He didn't make all his money in the slave trade in the video it talked about gold and salt.
Angelo Stevens Actually the miners were paid. Guessing about history doesn't make you right😂
trugb24 Or get an oscar for a white extra
The First time I heard of him I was in Awe. He rolled like 100,000 people deep. He had a true Entourage
Now thats what u call a king
A true kind hearted person who didn't look down on people just beauces he had all this power instead he cared about his people he shared his wealth, build schools for thousands of kids, and supported his religion
A true king in my opinion god bless him with heaven amen 🙏🏽❤
True, but do you realize that the slaves he tagged along were also humans?
*I bless the rains down in Africa!*
Thank you so much this is so beautiful :') it means a lot for African Muslims like me :) this is how you spread Islam....peace, education, charity and noble character. Not violence.

D ProDG Peace be with you! :) I can't do much for people who don't want to acknowledge that extremism is present in all faiths. I'm not here to start any debates, and I am not a big fan of trolling either. So well...if you're ready to learn the truth about Islam, I suggest you watch The Deen Show on TH-cam, or "Why-Islam". Rose Du Sahel I'm just pulling your legs :P. Thanks but, I know enough about Islam already.
Except he got his wealth through conquering cities. Religion of peace my ass
Mark Nutt in that time and situation that is the most reasonable way to spread religions. even the european do the same thing. the only different things is how they conquer other cities. in the name of knowledge and history how about you try and googled a bit. i'm pretty sure you will learn so much from that subject alone.
An affluent spender that actually gave to the poor and took care of his people!?

@@Aaron_1428 Mansa Musa’s gold travelled around the world along ancient trade routes between Africa, Europe, and Asia.
@@Aaron_1428 Egypt was connected to the rest of the known world by trade routes left the Romans around the Mediterranean and Asia Minor, the gold that they spent likely ended up in places like Greece and Anatolia and then spread further into Asia along ancient trade routes into China and India.

Mansa Musa when passing a place: "Want a sack of gold?"
😂😂
No wonder his grandchildren from Nigeria are asking for my help to transfer large sums of money.
😂
Lol
There's no more money the Africans get "civilized"😉😂
rockstarrist-7 LOLO SO TRUE
nice meme, this deserves my like.
That's so very true and rational.

If you are Malinke or whatever they call it in english, you can say that you share a bigger part of your DNA with him than other people
so the most charitable person on earth was an African damn, sometimes I feel I know nothing about this world.
The most charitable person is not the person that has the most money and gives comparatively a dollar but the man who gives the vast majority of his wealth away in expense of his comfort.
a charitable person doesn't own slaves
