  • Olga Ravn's The Employees (translated from the Danish by Martin Aitken) is a satire of hypercapitalist workplace culture, and a new exploration of that well-trodden theme of artificial intelligence vs the meaning of life, all written as a series of interview statements. And I love it. Here's why.

    That 2021 long list was really interesting - I was glad to discover the books by Diop, Labatut, Enriquez, Schalansky and Shibli and there are probably others I should try. Can’t wait for the 2022 list!

    Finally read this one (off of your recommendation here) and I enjoyed it. I was indeed able to finish it in just a few hours. Watched your review again and found it spot on, it's interesting to hear the different aspects that stand out to different readers because there's a lot in it! Totally agree that one could easily go back and just read bits and pieces of it again.

    Definitely putting this high on my TBR, and thank you to Snowy for sharing her Very Important Opinions! As someone who also loves Klara and the Sun, you might enjoy John Scalzi’s Lock In. It’s a near-future, post-pandemic exploration of disability, AI, and the social/political/legal implications of those intersections, all disguised as a police procedural. The novel started as an experiment to see if Scalzi could write a protagonist without a specified gender, which becomes an additional layer without feeling like a gimmick. There’s also a companion novella, Unlocked: An Oral History of Hayden’s Syndrome, written in that sort of epistolary style of snippets of first-hand accounts.
    Thank you as ever for your thoughtful reviews and my ever-growing TBR list!

    • @WillowTalksBooks
      @WillowTalksBooks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ooh I've never read a Scalzi before but you've really sold me on this one! There's nothing i like less than a police procedural but if it's hiding something smarter underneath then I'm all in!
