I want to thank you for a excellent video review and an outstanding recommendation. It is everything your describe and more. I purchased the Reate Torrent at the $375. price and it arrived in late November, Craftsmanship, materials, design, etc. are outstanding. For my purposes, its highly functional. I am not a collector. However, once I got that knife in my hands.... Wow!! Again thanks for the comprehensive review.Martin
Thank you Jim for sharing and interesting thoughts! I like the video very much! Reate make awesome quality product. I was glad to know that Todd Begg gave his permission for using his idea of pocket clip! About showing size comparison - you did your best at 12.15-13.00. With this camera position I think it is the best way to do.
Always unbiased fair review! You always say I'm no knifemaker in your video but your last name is perfect for a knife brand. BTW, "f tangent" was funny!
Sick ass knife Jim, keep up the good work bro, you kick ass. Your knife videos make me spend a lot of money because every time I see something on your channel I have to save to get it... thanks Jim, LOL,LOL,LOL
Reate is doing it right. Meeting a price point for those guys like me that do the nice knifes but don't wanna deal with the custom knife community shenanigans. I hover around sprint runs, pimped quality productions, and midtechs.
I'm the same as you. Full customs come with extra baggage. This type of knife is perfect for me. Quality of a custom without the high price and other BS.
Got my "New-Torrents" today along with a $500+ Graham mid-tech Razel. The Reate looks and feels like more knife in almost every way. The Razel has crazy lock stick and barely 10% to 15% lockup. I don't feel for a second like I over paid for the Reate. And I may have it mildly pimped because I like it so much. Even the weight is perfect to me. I sent a message to Graham in case he wants me to do anything. Otherwise I may send it for carbedizing when I send out the Reate. I only wish the Reate came in a tanto.
Nice knife, I agree with you about the lanyard hole, it's a lot better than just a little round hole, I think that in a lot of knifes a little round lanyard hole looks lazy and looks like an after thought.
I'm planning on moving on up and getting a Reate torrent or horizon soon, beautiful pieces. But I'll be damned if I'll ever find a smoother knife than my WE 609. Better fit and finish, materials on the Reates?...yes. But the 609 drops shut as if there were no pivot at all. Like falling through the air.
I like the blade shape and finishes, the handle and backspacer. Overall I like everything but the blade stops. I feel they detract from the knife and if not functional thumbstuds I would prefer internal blade stops like the Horizon series. Great fucking video! Oops I just cursed too. Damn you Jim! 😂
Wanted to make this my first Reate, but didnt know the price back then. For 375 you can get the limited edition USA made ZT0095 from Zero Tolerance to your door. Similar but even a bit better design, perfect fit and finish.
+Jim Skelton i know. just wanted to point out, that the new reate is priced too high - in my opinion. Couldnt understand the argument that they could even sell if for 500 or more. Would have bought my first chinese knife for 250.
David really does make the best lockbar inserts in the industry. I think about Ferum Forge. No offense to them but they are selling knives that are 600-2000 bucks and the lockbar inserts look really bad. My only concern with Reate is warranty work. If I chip the blade from edc use, do i send it to China? How long does that take? Hopefully there is a good answer to this because i want one of these knives super bad.
+Envy Sam So have you actually ever sent one into David for warranty work? if yes is it super pricey to get it to him and what shipping company did you use? Alsp how does tracking work with that kind of international shippment?
Maybe tell us about the edge on the blade, how it cuts and holds its edge since it is a production and will probably be actually used, not just a show pony custom
My apologies, that's really a given since I don't review low quality knives, so anything you see on my channel will have an exceptional edge. But yes, like all Reates, it is extremely sharp, and being properly heat treated M390 it will hold that edge for a long time, that's the nature of the steel.
+Elities Rin lol seriously, this isn't a 2000-3000$ dollar knife, it's a production knife that is fairly affordable, sorry if edge retention is stupid subject to you. Maybe if it was more just for a collection it wouldn't be such a big deal. So shut the fuck up fan boy
So funny how the market has changed. M390 is commonplace now. As far as the knife goes if it weren't for those turd in the punchbowl stop pins I'd already own one. Love everything else about this knife. It actually pisses me off that they aren't internal because this knife checks every other box for me lol
+PrimedProductions No, it's actually "New-Torrents" exactly as I wrote it. I'm not a fan of the name at all, but this was the result of a contest David ran on his FB group to name the knife.
What an insane luxury to be able to say "I really stick to customs and maybe every now and then a midtech.." haha man I hope to be in your shoes some day.
damn, saving up for a sebenza down the road. but now I think ill just get a reate instead. sort of want to see jim review a low quality knife for those F words
its nice to have this level of quality in your hands, but it seems to be that custom knives go up in value. Even protect against inflation. The community is getting bigger, and the limited runs are being desired by many enthusiasts.
Too bad, I would have saved for this knife if not having a renversible pocket clip wasn't a deal breaker. I don't understand why thoses marvelous knives (meaning Reate and Kizer knives) don't have reversible pocket clip...
Since lefties are in the severe minority, custom knives and Midtech knives (which Reate models their production knives after) aren't going to ruin the lines of their knives by tapping holes into the presentation side of the knife and ruin the design. This is done on production knives, and usually not the best looking ones.
I understand this but I know that I am not the only one to think of this as a deal breaker, I would really like if a company came if a very limited production of knives (for example the Torrent or any other high end/midtech) that are reversed.
I can't say that I'm impressed by the m390 steel. You can get a Benchmade 710 in m390 for $180. Great steel but not impressive at that price point really.
LOL you can't compare a basic G10 knife like a 710 to this. This is a full to ti framelock, all sculpted and milled, ceramic bearings, sculpted ti clip, ti hardware, etc. No comparison there. And yes, M390 at this price is a big deal.
+Jim Skelton The thing is that a knife like this, for most people, isn't a daily use knife, at which point steel type isn't any more than bragging rights. The fact that this knife uses m390 means much less relative to other aspects such as design and handle materials. I would rather the money from the m390 be spent elsewhere on a knife that is more of a showpiece than a daily carry. This knife and a 710 shouldn't be compared in the same way that an off-road buggy shouldn't be compared to a sports car, but if the sports car were to flaunt off road tires, I would point to the buggy as being the better option if that is a feature that means anything to you.
+Daniel Luzzi It all depends on your classification of "daily carry". 3-4 years ago I would totally agree that a $375 knife is in no way an EDC. However in that time I have gone from Benchmade and Spyderco to Brous, Reate, ZT, CRK, CKF and Ferrum Forge. Much like I went from Buck and Gerber up to Benchmade/Spyderco 15 years ago. I have a 710, in fact 3 of them. 2 in D2 one in M390 and it is a great knife but details make a huge difference. Details also cost, and the finer the detail the more they cost. Reate has exceptional attention to detail for the price. I would put my Horizon C against my FFKW Mordax any day and while the Mordax is a great knife I'd pick the Horizon almost every time. Its unfortunate but American built is more expensive. My best value knives are from Reate, Mcusta and CKF... Chinese, Japanese and Russian. That said I can't wait to get a Rick Barrett midtech and Rockstead. Jim Skelton has gone a bit off the deep end on knife collecting but I'll be the first to admit I'd follow him if I could. Be careful of the higher quality road, it is a slippery slope! :)
+Daniel Luzzi question why the hell would you think this is not a every day carry knife, benchmade is a great U.S.A company but come on they are a old production company, I mean shit they do a great job, but in know possible way shape or form do any of there knives even compare to this or any other reate knife. in fact do they even do ceramic ball bearings? don't think so, I would pay this much for a knife that will last a life time any way and then to get it in full ti, ceramic bearings, and anodizing, shit this knife straight up smokes any benchmade on the market. I don't care if the 710 is only 180.00, the difference is clear, your getting damb near a mid-tech at 375.00 that is much smoother and more high-end than a g10 benchmade that quite honestly is getting old, time to put all that benchmade, spyderco, and any other old ass company production crap away and step up to the new age, and yah the new age is Brous, CNF, and Reate knives, and honestly if I have to pay a hundred or so more for NEW AGE QUALITY KNIVES I will and pretty much everybody is, come on bro jump on board and get off the rocking chair and stand up and get a knife that is truly built to last plus damb good looking too. Do your self a favor save on 2 old benchmade models and get a real, new age knife, I bet you'll jump on board then, something to think about... just sayin!
I wonder what the cost of living is like where the designer and factory workers live. How much does $375 buy you over there? The knives look great and worthy of the USD pricepoint. Borrows some from Hinderer, but most all knife makers borrow from earlier designs. My primitive maths based on labor rates indicate that $375 USD in China is about $7500 USD in North America.
$375 isn't much in China these days. In many cities the average person is wealthier than a lot of places in the US. I'm from California where million dollar homes are considered cheap and my Chinese friends think that's cheap since homes and prices in China are 2x more expensive.
I think Reate has lost their identity. They took the market by storm with their Hills and D9. Epic folders for $200. Am I going to pick up a Reate over $250. Nope, nope, and nope. I'll pick up a Brous VR-71 then...
+Christopher Little How the hell has reate lost there identity? They just keep getting better, isn't that the idea? And yah typically when knives get better they get more expensive. I mean if they just kept making the hills and d9 they would be out of business in two years. I'm sorry but 375.00 for a knife of this caliber is a steal.
I had actually talked to David about his price points. Their target price points is about $300-450ish range. They entered the market at such a low price to gain exposure and popularity. Considering the regard we hold them in, I'd say they succeeded.
+EDDIE BONES -13- I decided what the hell and picked up a Sun Tzu Kwaiken. I am blown away. It is seriously the quality of a custom. I am eating crow. Reate is rockin' it!
Why would anyone watch this with their kids? I like this sort of stuff, and even I get distracted and stop watching every now and then. I can't see a 9-year-old finding it that interesting. Cold Steel videos, Lyn Thompson with the strung up pigs and post-apocalyptic wall-paper, hell yeah! What kid doesn't what to see a fat little man cutting up dead farm animals with a fucking broadsword? But 2000$ folders and Timascus and M390 and whatnot? Not so much. *** I crossed the floor some time ago when it comes to Reate and Carson Tech Labs. I don't have any interest in Kizer, but I have to admit, some of their designs are looking decent for the dollar. The M390 was a smart idea, I'm fairly tired of S35VN turning up on every knife. CKF have done the same, with M390 on both of their two new releases.

thanks for posting, Jim! that detail of the new lanyard hole design is pure WIN.
Thanks Jim. Videos like this are the reason I follow this channel. Although, it is a little tough on my wallet...
I just picked up the 2018 model with RWL 34!
Gorgeous piece from Reate. I love the overall appearance of the knife and I bet it performs well too no doubt!
Thank you Jim for sharing and interesting thoughts! I like the video very much! Reate make awesome quality product. Gotta like them harpoons! Sweeeet knife! Love that cachunk upon opening as well! Thanks for the great review Mr. Jim!
Reate is amazing, only foriegn merchandise i seek out, and it's always worth it. amazing fit and finish. quality thru and thru
David Deng makes incredible knives. I own three and waiting for my kwaiken to arrive. I'll definitely be getting one of these! Great review!
I just discovered Reate and do not regret it!
Sick ass knife Jim, keep up the good work bro, you kick ass. Your knife videos make me spend a lot of money because every time I see something on your channel I have to save to get it... thanks Jim, LOL,LOL,LOL

I'm the same as you. Full customs come with extra baggage. This type of knife is perfect for me. Quality of a custom without the high price and other BS.
Beautiful knife once again from Reate!
Have one on pre-order with BladeHQ, my 7th Reate. They generally have the best fit and finish out the many production knives I've handled.
Gotta love them Speed Holes!
I've owned two Reate models, the Valkyrie and I just got the wave. Really amazing quality.
Just got one from the reate group. So stocked to get this one.
Got my "New-Torrents" today along with a $500+ Graham mid-tech Razel. The Reate looks and feels like more knife in almost every way. The Razel has crazy lock stick and barely 10% to 15% lockup. That harpoon is veeeeery nice...
Just bought this one customized from SoCal knifeworks;) Greetings from Prague, Czech Republic.
Do the scales have milled out pockets to reduce weight?
+draco00 Yes
Si
Can the handle take a wd40 wash like the CRK'S?
Reate is making awesome designs
My next knife. Good vid, thanks.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is M390 preferable to S35VN? If so, why?
I just got my Horizon D CF and now this... my credit card is going to be smoking!
That's a nice Knife. Thank you.
Wanted to make this my first Reate, but didnt know the price back then. For 375 you can get the limited edition USA made ZT0095 from Zero Tolerance to your door. Similar but even a bit better design, perfect fit and finish.
+cyphersuit1 I directly referenced ZT at a little after 16 minutes in...
+Jim Skelton i know. just wanted to point out, that the new reate is priced too high - in my opinion. Couldnt understand the argument that they could even sell if for 500 or more. Would have bought my first chinese knife for 250.
Pretty sure he was stating a preference and not trying to educate anybody
Edit: guess there were more comments below... lol

+wit·kid·one David has service centers set up in the US now, so you're not waiting too long, and not out a lot of money for shipping.
+Jim Skelton Bad ass big Jim. Appreciate the info.
Would you suggest the horizon d cf or this model?
Kubi I've heard stellar things about both..I have a harpoon blade fetish though so I'll be grabbing one of these. Wish it had black handles though
I LOVE the speed holes joke.
Nice design, but the external stop pins put me off. At this price I expect internal for a cleaner look.
I usually would agree, but for some reason I like them on the Torrent. Maybe it's the sound?
Hello Is this what models
"New Torrent" by Reate
Very nice!
Maybe tell us about the edge on the blade, how it cuts and holds its edge since it is a production and will probably be actually used, not just a show pony custom

+sean john You should take a look at knives from Gavko, Tuff, etc. If it's not sharp, u can sharpen it yourself. What matters is its material.
So funny how the market has changed. M390 is commonplace now. As far as the knife goes if it weren't for those turd in the punchbowl stop pins I'd already own one. Love everything else about this knife. It actually pisses me off that they aren't internal because this knife checks every other box for me lol
I love how thicc it is. I'm a huge fan of over building.
Jim: Thank you !
Paul: Thank you !
Great review, but you said your not going to get this knife to flip it, why else would you get it :-)
Omg ITS SO PRETTYYY
Sweet knife
Isn't the name of the knife Torrent?
+PrimedProductions No, it's actually "New-Torrents" exactly as I wrote it. I'm not a fan of the name at all, but this was the result of a contest David ran on his FB group to name the knife.
+Jim Skelton Interesting, seems to be a disconnect between Reate and most of their vendors. Have to agree with you on the name choice.
What an insane luxury to be able to say "I really stick to customs and maybe every now and then a midtech.." haha man I hope to be in your shoes some day.
this video was fucking phantastic as always, Jim! But.... it is the second harpoon reate made, the first was the district9 plus! ;) (smartass alert)
Ahhhh Thank You for pointing that out. I believe you're right.
damn, saving up for a sebenza down the road. but now I think ill just get a reate instead. sort of want to see jim review a low quality knife for those F words
I cant wait until HD :(
hey look, another full Ti design nobody has seen before
Love it PEACE :-)
its nice to have this level of quality in your hands, but it seems to be that custom knives go up in value. Even protect against inflation. The community is getting bigger, and the limited runs are being desired by many enthusiasts.
tragic that its not m390 anymore
Like a little snapper 😂

I still like the Horizon D CF better than this one
375? Affordable? Jesus Christ I picked up the wrong hobby.
Within the world of high end knives, $375 is affordable unfortunately. I thought just like you when I first looked at this hobby.

I think Reate has lost their identity. They took the market by storm with their Hills and D9. Epic folders for $200. Am I going to pick up a Reate over $250. Nope, nope, and nope. I'll pick up a Brous VR-71 then...

+EDDIE BONES -13- I decided what the hell and picked up a Sun Tzu Kwaiken. I am blown away. It is seriously the quality of a custom. I am eating crow. Reate is rockin' it!
