I often find listening Burroughs read his own work often helps with aspects that went over my head whilst reading. He's a genius frankly, and a unique voice. Really dug your honest and fair review.
Wow I would never have thought that you would review this! I own 'Naked Lunch' but find its vignette style difficult to get through. I own and have read his easier works such as 'Junkie' and 'Queer'. I enjoyed reading those them. They're interesting insights into drug addiction and lgbt related issues.
It was hard to comprehend because he cut up his words and mixed and matched them. I'm not sure, but he was on that kick for some reason. I'm not really into it, but the cut-ups were something he and his friend Brion Gysin liked doing to create odd randomized phrases - Naked Lunch was a collection of such work.
The movie "Naked Lunch" from 1991 interestingly fuses motives and themes from the book with motives and themes from the real life of the original book's author. It might help "getting into" the book - as far as this is even possible...

Excellent review, very thorough. I've put off reading this book long enough, it's high time I get to it.
