You should never wrap your thumb around the crank handle, In the event it kicks back it can break your thumb/hand/arm. I was taught to open grip with your 4 other fingers only, that way in the event of a kick back it will just pull it out of your hand. I have had it happen this way and it hurts, but there were no broken bones
Ah, thank you! I will definitely make sure not to wrap my thumb around next time. This is my first crank start tractor, so I don't have much experience with the cranks. Thanks for the advice, though. It sure would suck to break a finger or arm.
