Inappropriate Content even then, he wasn’t one of the original composers of a song. He came in after Dude Ranch, there’s only so much he can do, he’s still operating off of what Scott did.
The wrist cracking isn't just from his technique or his plane crash. The main reason is that his bones and joints are super fragile because of his past addiction to pills. It's all in his book.
His technique absolutely contributed to his wrists he has stated that in interviews pills could add to that. He plays a lot more than most any drummer not just in blink so even with perfect technique he’s still gonna have issues. Look at some pics of his fingers missing skin and bleeding I mean come on you gotta be crazy to think his playing doesn’t fuck his wrists up. Secretary’s get carpal tunnel from using a keyboard every day. My grandma got arthritis in all the joints in her fingers from playing piano 70 years.
His drumming on Time To Break Up from Take Off Your Pants and Jacket is my favorite drumming of his, personally. th-cam.com/video/s9As269iYv4/w-d-xo.html
2 things 1)Now that you point out the technique I cant unsee it. 2) thats a Scott Raynor drum composition. You should do anthem(enema), first date(take off your pants and jacket), or violence(blink 182). Those are the three big travis albums and a decent song for him from each one. **edited in one song from each album**

If you are a drummer you are familiar with Blink and Barker. I honestly feel bad for Junkdrummer's students. Being all around the same age and a drummer as well, this is sad to me.
I'm a huge blink fan and a marching drummer myself. I completely agree with the technique. It all stems from the style of music. The louder you play the higher go the stick heights, and the higher the heights the more arm you use (as opposed to wrist and fingers). Blink actually had to cancel some shows because Travis had blood clots in both arms. Travis is such a great writer and orchestrator though and he can still play with the best of them.
Attention Blink 182 fans!! Yes. I know that he didn't record this song. But. He is actually playing the song. I have now posted a TB video if him doing Hearts All Gone here th-cam.com/video/hs_sB1nukb8/w-d-xo.html Have a nice day!
Cool to hear a drum teachers opinion about his drumming style. Everyone has a different view to different styles drumming and people need to accept that. Nice review buddy. Cheers from Hamburg, Germany.
Watch Harry Miree's video "5 tips for drumming like Travis Barker" and let me know what you think! He does a great job of showing different clips and picking really good Travis sections and plays/shows or talks about why their so good.
he wrote the current iteration, if you can't hear the obvious kick and snare pattern difference in the song since travis joined, then you're not paying attention.
not a drum expert though, i know scotts drum beat on dammit was the original but travis improvation kinda fasten the tempo which makes it very jamming to play it live ..just my opinion though..
Travis Barker isn't playing it at a faster tempo in this video. He's also playing it at 8th notes rather than 16ths which is harder in the original. Not to take away from Travis Barker though, he used to play 16th notes but he's getting old and there's the addition of the plane crash and the blood clots in his wrists.
I read Travis’ autobiography and he openly admits he has technique issues. He also plays so his snares are completely flat and hard on his wrists. He’s self taught
he plays all flashy like that with his little tricks because he is a showman as well. all the blink fans love it. and it’s just fun to watch live. i love his stuff for sure 🤘🏼
I would really love for you to do another one, this is one of the simplest, easiest, most boring songs (drumwise) of blinks catalogue, Travis doesn't shine at ALL, what's interesting about Travis' drumming is when he mixes up beats and rythms that are not usual in pop-punk music. Off the top of my head, some examples would be Anthem pt 2, Stockholm Syndrome, Down, Always, and of course Dysentery Gary, though I'm not sure where to find a live version of that, but all the others you can find decent live versions of. There is a reason so many people idolize Travis, and it's NOT his stick twiddling, his tattoos or his appearances in magazines, it's because he is an insane drummer.
September Kid I couldn’t agree more and well said Travis throws around patterns that are almost odd or u wouldn’t expect in a song necessarily but it sounds incredible he really puts a lot of technical skill and physicality and live he’s just on it like no one else he’s for sure unique, original as a mf just all around entertaining af to watch and awe inspiring to listen on any and everything he plays.....
Came here to say this. Travis had to somewhat add his Travis flare to make Scott (original drummer of blink) drum writing for this song sound less basic.
The weird thing about travis is non-drummers love him because he’s flashy and has a super unique style. Drummers (and other musicians alike) usually don’t like him because of the genre(s) he plays Or they maybe don’t give the proper credit where it’s due. Me, however, am a drummer and huge fan! That guy is so technically advanced, it’s sad he doesn’t get the recognition deserves. I’ve seen him live about 4-5 times and I’ll notice a gospel style chop or a time signature manipulation and it blows my mind! One tour, he broke his right foot so he did everything (even the fast punk beats and mike portnoy style riffs) with his left foot on the slave side of a dbl kick pedal........ didn’t miss a beat. So awesome
To all the people saying "Travis didn't write this song, Scott did" Travis has written the current iteration of the song, where he accents the guitar riff rather than Scott's syncopated approach. Scott also played sixteenths on the hats and a different groove in the chorus. Not to mention the triplets fills and the break at "he fucked her" which travis also wrote. Pay attention.
Travis did have issues from technique, but he said in an interview that changing so that he doesn’t practice as hard as he plays and using different types of strokes in rehearsals he has avoided such issues. He also toured with a broken arm and survived a plane crash. So he’s just tankin along.
I would have suggested doing a song that Travis actually composed the drums for, the drums in dammit are done by Scott. A video on the drums of feeling this would be a good one to break down.
The thing is Travis was in the marching band, and that's why he grabs like that and apparently that's the most comfortable grip for him. Grab the sticks tightly and not having a gap between thumbs and index fingers. I used to be a huge Travis fan when I was a kid, because I thought he was cool looking, fast and hard hitter, thus I thought "he must be the best drummer in the world". He was the reason I learned to play drums. I started copying him, his gesture, his grip, how he hits the snare, hi hats, basically everything except his fashion. and you know what? it hurt my wrists so bad. Simply didn't work for me. and then at some point I came across on Jared Falk and Jojo Mayer's video on YT, totally changed my style and no pain anymore. My point is, what's best for doesn't always work on someone else and so the opposite.

The wrist clicky thing can be unrelated to his playing. Like 18 years ago, I was in third grade, so everyone was like 8-9 years old. And I had a friend that did that sometimes. Not a musician, nor a sports guy. Just your usual elementary school kid. I remember him trying to explain to me how he did that. I can't remember fully now as it was almost 20 years ago, but he said something about "locking in" his middle finger in an extended kinda way while throwing his wrist back over and over 🤷🏼♂️
Travis is 43, not nearly 50. He also never wrote the drums for Dammit, and even still.. I think you should analyse his drumming in the self titled album. For instance, the song Violence or feeling this. Both of those are good starting points for seeing technique with Travis :)
Travis in my opinion is one the best Blink 182 was around in 90’s before the internet he made them drum beats from his own mind no youtuber say this is how you do it so yes travis is a good drummer and anyone who say he’s not is a idiot.
I'm not a Blink fan, but I am a drummer, and Travis is outta this world. There are other videos though that show him in a even better light then this one..
Everything he plays is fresh and creative. While most of drummers have a focus on speed, technique and rhythm. Travis has that plus creativity, freshness and massive songwriting skills. Can't think of a drummer that shows so many patterns. A new drumming lesson can be found in songs like Adam's Song, Anthem Part II, Down, Wishing Well, 155, Anthem, The Fallen Interlude, Always, Kaleidoscope, Pretty Little Girl, Long Lost Feeling, Los Angeles, Watch The World, Cat Like Thief...and could continue on and on. Blink 182 is so great thanks to Travis creativity plus Tom and Mark enjoyable and relatable compositions.
i think his wrist issue was actually from his plane crash. you should check out the videos of him playing with one hand after the accident. it really shows his skill with the drums
Yea brother after blink got Travis and after their first big album. They focus on Travis in the shoe a lot. Some shows they even move the drums forward. He also sometimes has a platform that goes upside down while he is soloing so yea like you said he is definitely putting on a show for the fans. Like I said blink makes the drummer a. Big part of a the show Check our “DOWN” by blink. You will love that beat
I can’t remember exactly what Travis said but there’s a video where Travis Barker talks about the technique of allowing stick to bounce back up vs the other technique. It is in a drum lesson tutorial and I believe it might be sponsored by Bose. Something like “Giving Back.”
You should check out Cynical by Blink 182. The drum parts are pretty fast, punk beats that he came up with. Gives a pretty good representation of his speed & preciseness.
Travis went to my High School and graduated the year before I attended High School. A buddy of mine was on the Drumline with him, and after Travis graduated, my buddy became the Drumline's Percussion Leader.
Thoughts on Zac Farro? Dude was putting out absolute heaters at like 13 years old with Paramore and HalfNoise is criminally under appreciated. Not a revolutionary drummer per-say, but his feel has been locked in since he was learning about long division
Travis is a very technically proficient drummer. There are several videos of his demonstrating great technique. Part of being great at something is mastering the book and then throwing the book out the window. This is the same in a lot of skill sets. Some of the best people in any field, by the book, aren't doing it right but that doesn't mean they haven't mastered the "right" way. The right way isn't always the best way. He is a drummer, a musician, an artist, but moreover, he is an entertainer. Everything he does is entertaining.
Please don't misunderstand me. I agree with everything you said. I only talk about technique in regards to my students who don't have the great talent that Travis has to be able up overcome bad technique. Technique for the mortals if you will.
Yeah, Travis Barker can have bad drum technique, but I don't know if you know, but Travis had lots of surgeries because of a terrible plain crash that he had in 2009 (or before) so, his wrist can be weird but I think it's because of the crash and the surgeries that he had after
I believe he may be right about his technique because even way back in the blink chronicles dvd Travis complained about carpel tunnel and having to wrap his wrists. He’s still my idol always has been. The reason I got into drums. I see a lot of people saying “oh it isn’t his song” well you can use better technique on any song, which song it is is irrelevant.
If everything have to follow the book..., then it aint punk rock man! Theres no right or wrong in doing it man... No point getting the technique.. but losing on the FEEL of the genre.. and some people just want to be different and be unique.. if every drummer plays the same thenn u r just another drummer..
He just put all energy to the stage... sure.. he can bounce really smooth, check another video from travis warming up. By the way I like your analyze... damn you such a pro drummer
If Blink were part of a different "wave" of punk than early 90's bands, then early 90's bands were not the "second" wave of punk, but instead the 4th or 5th!
Travis Barker is an amazing drummer. 2 hits on the drums and you can hear it`s him. He got his own unique style. The same can be said about the original drummer of The Smashing Pumpkins, he`s even better I`d say. And Steven Adlers drumming on Guns N Roses debut album Appetite For Destruction is PERFECT. So smoothe. Matt Sorum sounds like a techno beat, ruined several GNR songs on UYI.
It makes sense. He's talented as hell. He also has one arm in a sling every other tour. 😂 Which I guess makes him work twice as hard drumming one-handed! By the way, you should redo a video with a song he wrote. The drum part on Dammit wasn't originally his.
Blink 182 used to be my favorite band. Both Scott and Travis era. They aren’t that great now. You should do Watch the World by BoxCar Racer though. Also done by Travis Barker, and it’s an amazing/complex beat
I can see fanboys/girls saying things like "hurr durr if Travis has a problem with his technique, then why is he famous, successful, rich, and has many fans but you're not?!". I like that kind of flawless logic.
HE WROTE THE CURRENT ITERATION. Listen to Scott's pattern, and then Travis's pattern. Completely different approach. Travis accents the guitar riff while Scott syncopates around it. If you can't hear this, you're not playing attention to the subtleties of composition.
hey steve i realize your super busy but if you would can you check the ex drummer from the band intronaut! danny walker is his name. love to hear some insight on his style as a drummer from you! keep the vids flowing, love them!!!!!!
You couldn’t of chosen an easier song to play - Travis is a marching band drummer in the past - he can do almost anything - watch his warm up videos and review that !
Travis is one of those guys, I don’t like watching him play..but I love what he does on the kit. This validates my thoughts about his technique. Doesn’t take away from him being great, please people. He’s still amazing, but his technique has always been bad. Am I better than him? hell no I’m not, I’m a nobody. I am aware of everything he’s been through, but his technique has always been bad. Still amazing and highly influential. I love how you said sir, don’t mimic his technique.
He shows off like that cuz he is so much more talented than what punk has to offer. He gets bored after twenty yrs of playing something he mastered before he even joined blink
Actually Travis loves to play different styles, I don't play drums but I love his mindset about drums. He's just obsessive about it and he's really motivating me to grow in my art field. I'm sure you're a great drummer too but maybe you get his mentality quite wrong
Just discover your channel now, good job man ! You just won a subscriber ;-) But I think it's not the good song to react to, you should listen to Hearts all gone, Dogs eating dogs or even old stuff like Mutt or Down. But as you said, he still an amazing and a badass drummer ! Can you do some react to old jazz drummer ? (Max Roach, Jo jones...) Cheers from France ;-)

Love the 1st wave grew up in the 80s so I got to hear the best of old school punk with the heavy reggae beats mixed in you know when real 90s ska oi more great strains
Should check his drum cover of ‘soulja boy’ awful song, and like 14 year old camera quality, but he still makes it work, and its pretty fast and very loud :D
I think Travis just likes the workout of smashing the fuck out of the drums, it also gives a different sound when you hit the drum in that deliberate way. In my opinion
Cool review, but you may wanna check out a different song, Travis didn’t write Dammit! It was written by Scott Reynor, blink’s old drummer

Travis went to my High School and graduated the year before I attended High School. A buddy of mine was on the Drumline with him, and after Travis graduated, my buddy became the Drumline's Percussion Leader.
React to Lamb of god’s “the faded line”
Chris Adler is just epic all the time. Sad that he’s not with lamb anymore
Thoughts on Zac Farro? Dude was putting out absolute heaters at like 13 years old with Paramore and HalfNoise is criminally under appreciated. Not a revolutionary drummer per-say, but his feel has been locked in since he was learning about long division
Pretty insightful commentary
Hope your content gets more recognition
Thank you!!
Yeah, Travis Barker can have bad drum technique, but I don't know if you know, but Travis had lots of surgeries because of a terrible plain crash that he had in 2009 (or before) so, his wrist can be weird but I think it's because of the crash and the surgeries that he had after
That's a good point
I believe he may be right about his technique because even way back in the blink chronicles dvd Travis complained about carpel tunnel and having to wrap his wrists. He’s still my idol always has been. The reason I got into drums. I see a lot of people saying “oh it isn’t his song” well you can use better technique on any song, which song it is is irrelevant.
I was at this show!! I'm one of the tiny faces in the crowd lol
If everything have to follow the book..., then it aint punk rock man! Theres no right or wrong in doing it man... No point getting the technique.. but losing on the FEEL of the genre.. and some people just want to be different and be unique.. if every drummer plays the same thenn u r just another drummer..
I guess but not everyone needs to destroy their bodies like Travis to do that
He just put all energy to the stage... sure.. he can bounce really smooth, check another video from travis warming up. By the way I like your analyze... damn you such a pro drummer
Thank you. And I will!!
If Blink were part of a different "wave" of punk than early 90's bands, then early 90's bands were not the "second" wave of punk, but instead the 4th or 5th!
It's funny you mention the wrist clicking. I have the same issue. I think it stems from marching band, honestly.
This was really interesting to watch as a non-drummer, thanks for a great video!
Thank you!!
I'm not a teacher but I can tell you the "stick tricks" are to avoid hand fatigue at that speed at that age
I'm going to down the road now that I know he wasn't the drummer on the original recording
@@JunkdrummerTV "Down" would be a great one to review...
Junkdrummer react to Baard Kolstad, is the dude really a genious as he seems to be ? Thanks, keep up the good work!
Little does he know Travis started playing drums in his local high school marching band
Blink 182 used to be my favorite band. Both Scott and Travis era. They aren’t that great now.
You should do Watch the World by BoxCar Racer though. Also done by Travis Barker, and it’s an amazing/complex beat
actually travis didn't "create" de drums of Dammit
it was Scoot Raynor
See highlighted comment
Travis tried out for the bluedevils dci group out of concord Cali. I'm a Gigantic dci fan. If you have never seen some of dci drumlines, check em out!
I've done 2 DCI videos. Check em out!
@@JunkdrummerTV how did I miss those?!? I swear I scrolled all your vids. I go every year to the south eastern championships in atl! It's insane!
He was the drummer for the ska band aquabats before blink 182
I can see fanboys/girls saying things like "hurr durr if Travis has a problem with his technique, then why is he famous, successful, rich, and has many fans but you're not?!". I like that kind of flawless logic.
Just sayin, Travis didn’t write that drum part, it was Scott raynor
Good vid, though!
Thank you!!
Please listen carefully he don't know travis and blink 182.
HE WROTE THE CURRENT ITERATION. Listen to Scott's pattern, and then Travis's pattern. Completely different approach. Travis accents the guitar riff while Scott syncopates around it. If you can't hear this, you're not playing attention to the subtleties of composition.
Technique doesn’t matter if the music sounds good.
Totally agree
Yeah until it affect your health and hurt you physically.
I also agree
hey steve i realize your super busy but if you would can you check the ex drummer from the band intronaut! danny walker is his name. love to hear some insight on his style as a drummer from you! keep the vids flowing, love them!!!!!!
I would love an analysis of Keith Moon. His drumming is so crazy.
yeah he's crazy shit
You couldn’t of chosen an easier song to play - Travis is a marching band drummer in the past - he can do almost anything - watch his warm up videos and review that !
I'll be doing more Travis down the road
Travis is one of those guys, I don’t like watching him play..but I love what he does on the kit. This validates my thoughts about his technique. Doesn’t take away from him being great, please people. He’s still amazing, but his technique has always been bad. Am I better than him? hell no I’m not, I’m a nobody.
I am aware of everything he’s been through, but his technique has always been bad.
Still amazing and highly influential.
I love how you said sir, don’t mimic his technique.
You get me sir
He shows off like that cuz he is so much more talented than what punk has to offer. He gets bored after twenty yrs of playing something he mastered before he even joined blink
Excellent drummer. His tech is an illusion
Please react to Travis Barker playing Hearts All Gone, that's one of his best drumming songs.
Your wish is my command
I second this
Yess this is he finest song of drumming. And im a blink fan since chesire cat
But dammit is not that impressive... I mean the drum was pretty standard... scott was on the drum back then...
I never knew there was another drummer before him
@@JunkdrummerTV yeah travis barker is the second drummer of blink 182... the first album that featured travis was enema of the state...
You just won a subscriber ;-)
But I think it's not the good song to react to, you should listen to Hearts all gone, Dogs eating dogs or even old stuff like Mutt or Down.
But as you said, he still an amazing and a badass drummer !
Can you do some react to old jazz drummer ? (Max Roach, Jo jones...)
Cheers from France ;-)
Thanks! I will be doing some jazz drummers down the road.
You should review Matt Greiner drummer for August Burns Red.
What's your band called Steve?
Oh man. I was afraid of someone asking that. I'm hesitant to say because I'm trying to stay as anonymous as a TH-camr can be hahaha!
If you're gonna react to 90s punk drumming, you gotta look at Josh Freese.
Apc? Same?
@@dannylineberry2308 A Perfect Circle, Devo, The Vandals, and a bunch of other things, yeah. Chiefly I was thinking of the Vandals, just cause 90s punk. But the dude has drummed for seemingly everybody, if not as a member of the band, than at least as a session drummer.
Cat like thief (bcr)

First Date
Anthem part 2

THERE'S SOO MANY SONGS
And your selection was:

I thought the same thing
Ghost On The Dance Floor
Super off topic, but I love your accent. Coming from a Maryland native
Thank ya! I bet you say dog like doge
It's from the MusInk festival that Travis Barker puts on every year.
Drummer at the wrong gig video is awesome.
Please do a different Travis song. Dammit was written before he was in the band. Imo neighborhoods was the album that showcases Travis a lot.
Plsss react to dave grohl live at paramount drum
I always thought he sounded boring or cheesy. But thats what punk is in my mind.
I wanna see how travis react's to this dude's review lmao
Bro just a reminder thats travis fucking barker, his probably 10times better than u jk
Probably 20
@@JunkdrummerTV leave my uncle alone
Travis’ technique definitely does get him injured, he’s had blood clots in his arm and he’s made his hands bleed
React to Damon Che ( Don Caballero) or John Stanier (Battles)
You seriously need to take a look at John Wright from Nomeansno. You will be blown away by his jazzcore brilliance.
New found Glory is because of blink. Remember blink started in 93
i think the video of travis was at the musink fest at the OC fair grounds. Its his event he puts on.
In my experience people who say “that’s how i like my punk Rock” and “I’m down” don’t like punk and are indeed NOT down
I think Travis just likes the workout of smashing the fuck out of the drums, it also gives a different sound when you hit the drum in that deliberate way. In my opinion
I was at that concert. At the musing festival in Cali 2018
That's awesome!
The 2nd wave was and still is the best to me.
Hahaha. Me too
Yeah, NOFX dude.
