Great work, but I would definitely have replaced the cable too. I believe the gradual speed up will be due to the brushes taking on the correct curve of the armature, and hence better electrical contact is happening. Regards Mark in the UK
Agreed. A nice see through armoured core cable (with the visible silver braid) inside would’ve fit the original cable boot nicely, and looked awesome as well.
This was a real treat, my dad had one just like it in the 60's as a child he used to let me play with it, I had a board with a bunch drilled holes in it.
Your channel started me off watching restorations on TH-cam. I am glad you are doing things you enjoy now with cars, but this is refreshing throwback. It’s a cool old drill.
I agree, it's just a generic black tool cord, there's nothing unique about it worth preserving, just looks manky next to all the shiny new paint. My assumption is that the turn around time on this project was short and couldn't source a new cable in time.
Such a nice quality casting, and the engineerings so solid and serviceable. Their engineers obviously refused to design planned obsolescence into the thing!
Just a suggestion. If you're rewiring again, consider replacing the old wire with a long electric kettle lead. The weight of the wire should be the same. Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing the cars come back soon.
Outstanding job restoring it to it's former glory. You're right, many things today are not made like years ago. Many things are throw away, not repairable. Thanks. 👍🏻
@@willemp6432 For no reason at all, it appeared to have given up its smoking habit. 😂 Working totally fine vs the other day when it had sparks flying out of it lol.
I have 2 of that model of drill, one in 240v and one 110v and they both still work fine apart from cosmetic appearance, I also have the next size up in the series which I regularly use in my drill press without any problems. Like you said great standards of materials and workmanship back then.
I personally prefer to see these small restorations instead of cars, the cars last so long that it is boring and their high cost lengthens the process, even more, I know it is your main source of money, but I hope you continue to restore small, interesting and beautiful things as well.
i happen to have an even bigger than that one black and decker drill it has a number 3 morse taper socket on the front end.. a friend bought a new milwalkee hole hog.. he was so proud of it.. as he opened his van door. he said lets play who has the biggest power drill . i said OK... he whipped out this 5 minutes from homedepot drill kit.. i climbed in my van and moved some stuff around and pulled out that monster of a drill.. he said.. i don't want to play who has the biggest tool with you anymore.. oh and you should see my 3/4" milwalkee 240 volt drill.. i took the handle off to put a new cable on it.. and the wife threw out the screws .. when i got replacement screws she threw out the handle... oh well i did not have any place to plug it in anyway..
Great job, I was wondering if you make your own chrome plating solution or if that is nickel plating, what do you use to make it so bright not yellow. Thanks Ray
I’m surprised you didn’t disassemble the chuck? They don’t look like it but they are easy to disassemble, just close the jaws half way, put a socket over the jaws that’s big enough to not contact the jaws but smaller that the inner diameter of the circular rack gear that the chuck key interfaces with then just hold the chuck by the bit that tightens it and hammer on the socket There are video tutorials online if my rambling makes absolutely no sense 🤣

I like that the brushes are easily accessible from the outside
..good to see something not made of far East plastic, nice job, have a great week..
I thought so too. Thanks 👍
Wirings should be replace by the new ones for the sake of safety not just to restore it to its original. Just my two cents.
Agreed. A nice see through armoured core cable (with the visible silver braid) inside would’ve fit the original cable boot nicely, and looked awesome as well.
Nobody is going too use it so no point in replacing wiring!
Ridiculous see through cable on a 50 year old drill resto ...
@@135Ops Someone, sometime will use it, and most likely seriously injuring themselves over a $2 cost savings. Shame.
@@135Ops so then why did he go through all the trouble of replacing the brushes if no one was going to use it?

lovely restore but really ought to have replaced the mains flex

Didnt even sand the comutator bars
My dad had the exact same drill and a circular saw which always frightened the hell out of me when I was a young kid.
Great restoration, I remember when Black and Decker were a great brand of tool.
Such a nice quality casting, and the engineerings so solid and serviceable. Their engineers obviously refused to design planned obsolescence into the thing!
Back when black & decker was a well respected brand

Well done sir, I love how meticulously you do these random restorations. You are quite talented my friend.

Yay, drill repair! Actually, that reminds me... My drill took up a bad habit recently. It started smoking. Gotta open it up and do some surgery.
Try Hypnosis...🤓

@@JimGriffOne Maybe he smoked some bad stuff...but I`m happy for you.😁
Looks great but I would’ve replaced the cord.
And add more grease!
They are absolutely not made like these any more, great job.
That came out really well

Excellent restoration
5:32 remove the 'plague', sounds like a good plan!
You are preserving culture - both on large and small scale. :)
Nice job 👍 love the colour, turned out great.
The Black & De ker gold series drill is like new, & improved.
I have the same drill, and still use it almost every day🤌
Great Job, I have one the same in my garage that needs restoration too.
Esa Taladradora para Black & Decker Museo!
Great job!!!
Congratulations!!! Thank you for.this video
Really nice restore on that drill. Great video.
Nice work. It's right what you state about modern tools. All made to a minimum price line to maximise profits.
great result, well done guys 👍
This is satisfying
Keep it up buddy! Nice work

Gotta love tools that pre-date safety.
But i have to ask why the heck would you reuse that old cord? Especially when its only a meter long?
Beautiful job, and a beautiful drill. As you said, they definitely don't make them like that any more!
Beautiful work.
Awesome restoration as always! Keep them comming and congrats!
Fun project.
Well done!
truly well done
Could you do a video about the chrome plating or what you use for it?
Muito bom, parece um secador de cabelo dos anos 70
Good job
You really a wizard mate, great video.
Wonderful job 👍. Cheers

What role do the small springs have within the mechanism of the drill?
If someone painted my beautiful shiny aluminum drill, there’d be hell to pay!
But they were originally gold painted - he's restoring it to the original.
@@tonywatson987 I know, and I’d only expect as much from the master.

I have the same curiosity
Wow i Love the Video and this Job you do wonderful Work.
No more ED ads please 😭😂
Muy buen trabajo. As ever...!
Nice job 😎😎😎😎
The reason it'll go another 60 years is because its made from metal for the most part. New drills are made of plastic.
Nice
when the video started i had to make sure the video wasn't sped up
Thats the issue with modern stuff, it's designed to break and that's right after the warranty has expired.
Дрель была практически новая. Заменить провод с вилкой и щëтки и лет сто спокойно может работать. 😅😅😅
Before Black & Decker became chinese crap. This is beautiful.
4th Drill
using the old cable? not smart
Back in the day, if the switch, armature or any part failed then you could get a spare from your local B&D supplier. Not like today's throwaway junk.
wow
When you start brushing and I noticed the attached plaque i wanted to scream. Luckily few seconds later you realized.
it will get faster as the brushes bed in and make better contact on the com bars
Funniest sponsoring of all time.

What does "knowling' mean?
What happened to the Mercedes W123 resto? Have I missed something?
I could use a drill and a Roman pill
Using the old wiring again is a really big no-no.
Tbh the wiring was a total bummer
Wheres the videos of all these finished restored cars first
Grate effort and time taken even to chrome plating screws but saves £5 on new mains cable why?
Didnt have time to find a replacement. I did this video on very short notice and had a deadline with the brand. I can always add a new one now. Cheers
check the chuck!
man, that's almost too pretty to use.
Do not clean aluminum thinks with wire brush cleaner.
replace that old cable please its not safe anymore
FWIW, unless it's spelled differently in the UK (which is always a possibility), there's no 'w' in 'knolling'
