  • Working on the canoe, finishing it off. The gunwales caps or top wales are installed. The last root lashings are done. I then head to the water to try the canoe out ... coming in next video ! Will it float ?
    Finition des dernières coutures et préparation pour le premier essaie dans l'eau ! Est-ce que ça va bien aller comme petit canot ?

    Nice to see the craftsmanship has travelled from the stone age up until us and is still alive. :-)

    Are you using the same holes

    • @NomadicWoodsman
      @NomadicWoodsman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The holes for the pegs are new holes, they need to be drilled before putting the peg in. I drill them at a slight angle towards the inside of the boat. so they go from the top wale to the inwale and avoid the bark and outwales.

    Avec cette série de vidéos que tu as réalisée, quiconque qui désire se construire un canot d'écorce trouvera plus que toutes les informations nécessaires. Du beau travail, une vraie oeuvre d'art ce canot. Bravo!

    Bravo! J'ai bingé la série et je suis impressionné par la qualité du travail et le soin apporté aux détails. Les zooms sur les stitches et la solidité de la structure au final sont mind blowing.👍👍👍

    That is an amazing pice of history ,art and craftsmanship , I wish you would have shown it off more , I would have liked to get a really good look at it . How many work hours did you put into it ( at least a couple hounded ) you got a new fan know , I'll be watching . Thank you .

    • @NomadicWoodsman
      @NomadicWoodsman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much ! I don't count the amounts of hours but I would think about 200-400. Takes about 4 or 5 weeks full time work to assemble the canoe so 40hx4 or 5 = 200 hours but you also have alot of research time, gathering materials(roots, bark), searching for materials(bark) etc. This was my 3rd canoe so I am also alot faster at different tasks such as processing the roots compared to my first canoe.

      Yes Head board ! Sometimes when working I get in such a chill mindset that it is hard to think about filming and narrating haha I just grove with the build and concentrate on next steps ! :) I do not have a big enough living room unfortunately ! The basement though !

      @@NomadicWoodsman I hear ya. It comes across you're having a good time. I hope you make notes or keep a journal. I was reading the Adney/Chapelle book and trying to make sense of Chapelles discription of the building of a canoe. He did a phenomanal job of compiling Adneys notes into a book but real world athropologists like you can make corrections (where needed) and fill in those little details that an acedemic may not know about or consider important. A lot of guys building canoes seem to not share trade secrets.

      @@timothylongmore7325 i am hoping the images of the video act as some sort of journal. I will try to film more what i find is missing in this series : stempieces and headboards and also the inwale gunwale frame initial build. Alot od the measurements are hard to explain in video... the adney sketches are 100% helpful and precise in my opinion. Just have to "put in the work" as one would say. :)

    • @timothylongmore7325
      @timothylongmore7325 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NomadicWoodsman Adneys work is great but he left all the compilation to Chapelle who put it together. I can't imagine how much work that was. No a good video log while maybe not presenting that in your videos is a good way to take notes. Have you thought about or have you made one of those measurement sticks they talk about in the Adney/Chapelle book. That'd be a cool way to keep track. I bet you'll get schools and first nations wanting to pay you to come and demonstrate your skills.

      @@timothylongmore7325 no measurements stick, i have the canoes i built as perfect models haha. 3 is starting to take up alot of room though hahah :) that would be fun to give out workshops.

    I live in the high dry desert country in Idaho.
    A birchbark canoe would dry out and fall apart here.
    I had to have a fiberglass hull made and synthetic rattan for bindings.
    I love watching you work on your canoe.
    Thanks for sharing.
