Epic! I'm spending some time watching multiple videos on how to make a viking shield. Yours looks incredible. Even though I'm trying to make it look as authentic as possible so I might not wanna use screws.
+Forsaken Thank you bro 😎 😊 Yeah I used screws because it is on wall (most of his time) so it is not visible, I even planned to take off the handle but then friends cannot hold it when they visit and want to take picture with it😂😂😂 Moris
Haha well if it's just for decoration I can see your point. Well mine would be used for actual fighting... With dull weapons of course XD I gotta say your video is the first one where I see two layers of planks being used. It kind of makes sense to me, because you can have the planks of the two layers crossing each other, which would prevent a weapon cutting deeper into the shield because it hits right between two planks. Also it's the first video of you that I watched and you got a new subscriber XD
+Forsaken 😉 yeah, they actually used laminated shields correctly because of that: grain running in both ways which makes the shield much more resistant and durable to breaking, splitting... I don't use it for practice fight 😂😂 but I tested it, my friend was hitting it with an splitting axe (i was holding it) and it works but I would not like to be hit in shield boss region hahahah ✊ Welcome aboard bro 😎 Moris
I am blown away by what you all have created! Such ingenuity using other tools for different purposes, like the ball pien hammer as a kind of anvil! Genius! Thank you so much for sharing!
Don't get me wrong that is the most beautiful shield I have seen yet on the Internet but I would have liked to see the boss made from a piece of sheet metal instead of a bowl but I am in awe of the craftsmanship of everything else
+Theswaggeringwombat I would also like to have a real boss on there but I don't have place to forge (yet) but I tried to make my own but it didn't work out :( so I used dog bowl which looks amazing for 2 dollars and not 40 dollars for decent handmade shield boss. Thank you for your comment :) ~M~
Had me right up to the surgered leather, screws and bowl for the boss, honestly looks like you have the skills to have made the boss your selves. Still a good video, just some constructive feed back
Looks great! I normally don't like Viking shields because the painting is usually just a bisection or quadsection of 2 colors. The dragon makes this awesome!
I wish, I really wish I saw someone making shield without the modern tech and tools, or at least saying or explaining how vikings did it back then and how to put it together. It's still a nice video though. Cheers!
I like the Fenrir design you put on there. I'm building my own skjöldr and I'm about halfway done now. I will thank you because I'm using a style and design very much like yours. Thank you again for the ideas and the design. For the decoration of the skjöldr I'm actually painting the curved block with the colors of my family crest.
Awesome video, although ideally the paint would hide the wood grain. You didn't want your opponent to know which way the wood grain runs since this makes it easier to crack the shield (even when it's double boarded). But what the heck, it just looks so epic with the grain showing :P
Luther H GrindstoneMtn Thank you bro, it's not hard to do it at all :) if you decide to make one, you can ask for help anytime through comments or via Instagram Have a nice day ~M~
I personally think they did it, It gives a lot of strength to the structure and it protects against weather + paint layer. Animal glue was common and if they didn't use cloth they probably used animal hide on same purpose. When you look at the ships they built I doubt, that a shield, which was their primary tool of protection was just a crude thing made flimsy. It had to be strong, light and flexible enough to withstand the impact of enemy whacks and blows 🤘🍺 Btw, It is definitely easier to paint on fabric.. that's for sure haha 😂 Moris
Did I see the steps correctly? 2 layers of the 8mm boards, laid cross ways, then cloth glued to boards and then background paint on the cloth? Why the cloth? To smooth the surface? And thanks for sharing, it looks amazing!

Hahah Thank you Bro 🤘🍺 For Valhalla!!!
and our Honoured dead
The Zigzag stiching on the fake leather is so authentic. The actual decoration is the only authentic part about it.
Hahaha 😂😉
From the few videos I've seen and pics and such..you viki's put alot of effort into this sheild !! Thanks

+Green Cupcakes Glad you like it 😄😊🤘
Complete with blood splatter! Too cool. A craftsman and an artist; not the same things. Great work!
Thank you :) I finished art school for sculptor ;)

Great job. I wish you had shared the template for the image.
Thank you Bro 💚 You can find it online 🤘 just google "Fenrir design" it should be first 😉
You need to make yourself a push stick! Watching you rip that lumber was nerve racking.
+Matt F I have 3 of them ;) ahh I am aware of what I am doing, but one day I will cut off my arm 🙋 :p
i love that you put fenrir in norse on there
+oliver hardy Of course 😊 😄 🍺 🤘

Scrap wood City Thank you Dimitris, yeah it was my father idea, they came out looking awesome and handmade pinned.
Good use of a dog bowl 👌🏻

Awesome paint!!! 🤟🏻
Thanks Bro 🤘
Incredible Brother!
Thanks Bro :)
Im glad you made it say somwthing instead of putting random runics on it
Be cool to make one that has kevlar on the back or in the middle somehow. Imagine a shield-wall of bullet proof Viking shields ?!?!
Hahaha highly needed in those times 😅 it would be interesting with center grip 😂
Haha, awesome. I loved how you used thumbtacks there. Been following your work for a while now and I reckon I'm going to keep coming back.
+OGWARF1 Thank you bro :) yeah those thumbstacks are pretty handy, I also used them on a helmet ;)
You are awesome :D Thanks for your support :)

I wish, I really wish I saw someone making shield without the modern tech and tools, or at least saying or explaining how vikings did it back then and how to put it together. It's still a nice video though. Cheers!
It would have been completed with saws, hatchets, and chisels all of which vikings had in there day.
Nice work! Thx from Czech
+Bugy Thanks buddy :)

Would you recommend double layer shield
What do you mean?
great video and artistic skill. What size is the shield--dimension across?
Thank you 🍻🤘 I don't remember, check description maybe I wrote it there
What is the purpose of putting the cloth on vs just sanding and painting the wood?
It is easier to paint on cloth and it makes it stronger 😉🤘
Excellent !
Rough woods Thank you :)
Why do you put the cloth on?
Easier to paint on, and it reinforces the shield a bit more actually..
@@EpicWorkshop Thank you. No one has really even said anything about the cloth. Thanks for the explanation.
Did vikings actually use cloth or did you do it to make design easier to paint?
I personally think they did it, It gives a lot of strength to the structure and it protects against weather + paint layer. Animal glue was common and if they didn't use cloth they probably used animal hide on same purpose. +Build Stuff with AJ Hahah Thanks It definitely would look awesome 😄
Really beautiful. I've been thinking of doing a project like this and this video is very motivating
Thank you Bro 🤘 you have to do it 🍻 you will love it 😉
Ok took me a while, but finally made my wood sheild, need to send you a pic and see what ya think
+David Good That's awesome David:) send it via Instagram :D

do you have to wait for the glue to dry before you paint the bed cover?
Yeah 😉 🤘
Oké thanks
Very cool. Where do you get the wolf logo?
+Fjolnir Gangleri Thank you 😄 I found it in the Internet and adapted it for my shield 😉
You guys are so good. Love this channel.
+kubel83 Thank you Bro :)
Did I see the steps correctly? 2 layers of the 8mm boards, laid cross ways, then cloth glued to boards and then background paint on the cloth?
Why the cloth? To smooth the surface?
And thanks for sharing, it looks amazing!
Yep, all correct, it is easier to draw on cloth and it also gives a bit of strength to the shield 😉 Thank you Bro
should clarify this is a project shield not a reproduction or era accurate model. . . looks like it was fun and you made something great job :)
+sikosis999 I think it is pretty clear that this is a reproduction, pretty sure Vikings didn't have inox dog bowls...
Thanks bro 🤘🍺
What pain did you use, it’s very important
Acrylic paint 🤘
Abso-freakin-lutely amazing!
+Jim Westbrook Thank you!! 😀😉😎
I don’t like the fake blood but I really like everything else :D
thanks
I wanna see the back of it next time
Since I use it as a wall decoration, it is very very simple 😂
Beautiful shield. Working on one myself. You did a great job ! Thanks for sharing.

Epic Workshop Sure. I will post the video on my channel as well. 😊🖒
The Redsmith yeah even better bro :)
Shield looks awesome! But how did you trace Fenrir onto the shield with all the intricate curves and such? Do you have a printable pdf or something that you used?
Thank you 😊 I drew it directly to the shield, I used a photo on phone I think. I don't have printable pdf but you can find that design on google: Fenrir design 🤘
