BioWare: "this has been edited to avoid spoilers" also BioWare: "Ghilan'nain has an Archdemon and is attacking Weisshaupt" lmao they could've just said "here is a mission where you fight darkspawn" and left it at that
@@tss6b09 I thought about that during 2077 marketing campaign. "DUDE if they're showing so much imagine what else we didn't see!!" And it turned out that half of the footage from the trailers was taken from the game's endings lol
I'm torn. On the one hand I want to remain optimistic and think that if this is what they're willing to reveal, imagine what's actually in store for us. The more cynical side of me is thinking "what the fucking fuck are these guys smoking to just spoil all this stuff".
Honestly, at this point, I think the theory that the Old Gods are really just the Evanuris has gotten so popular to where BioWare's just like, "Eh, there's worse we could spoil about this game." Besides, they already spoiled Solas turning into a kaiju wolf at what I assume is the endgame fighting Elgar'non as a dragon, so really anything that isn't a big plot twist or character beat is fair game at this point. Also, this game has about the same number of lines for characters as Inquisition did at around 80,000 (not counting the differences between players' Rooks), so there's probably going to be a lot more story to unpack beyond this.
So you’re telling me as a warrior I can Sparta Kick someone off a ledge, drop kick them, throw my shield like I’m Captain America, and make them “GET OVER HERE” like scorpion? Yeah might have to play a warrior this time around 😂
@@hangender You had disabling/comboing ablities in 2, 3 and Andromeda. It was way more apparent/common in 3 and Andromeda with combos. But you could CC enemies with neural shock/fire damage if they were biological, hack/overload if they were synthetic, etc. You could deploy drones for taunt.
The impression I get from this is that your companions are basically nothing but damage sponges except when you activate their special abilities etc. I find this very frustrating - your companions are supposedly elite fighters etc. and should deal proper damage as well. One of the most annoying things in Jade Empire (way back!) was that your companions basically didn't do any damage. Ok so I recruit this supposedly incredibly dangerous, double-axe wielding badass who is famous for massacring so many people - and he basically can't beat anyone in a fight. Looks very much the same thing here. In Mass Effect (2), the companions weren't MVPs or anything, but they did sort of pull their weight: you gave Garrus a good sniper rifle and he would actually drop enemies. Please try and aim for the same here.
I noticed that too, and I agree. However. When they went over the equipment, you could see what looked like a sword on the left side of the menu. Darvin had 105, while Rook had 219 I think. If that is attack, it would mean that rook would deal more then twice dmg then Darvin. It could be that the devs didn't want to put best gear on Darvin because they specifically wanted to showcase Rook. I'm hoping that in actual game, I could equip Lucanis so that he has higher dmg output then Rook. Or at the very least, similar.
I made a similar comment. The game is a step back in a lot of ways compared to other titles like Balder's Gate, Pathfinder 2, Elden Ring, and more. The expectation is that this company was on par with the other Triple AAAs. This not having something unique or fun for the fight system is very disappointing. I loved Dragon Age 2. This game feels like the direct sequel to Dragon Age 2 rather the Inquisition. Also, the fighting system is pretty (lavender Parry bars), but not much else. The saving grace to me is if the "Make your own world" is real and not just like 3 or 4 options like in the inquisition. Hopeful more then Mass Effect 3 end options. I have the money to purchase this now with no issue. I won't. I do not have faith this game will survive unless someone knows something to tip the scale.
@ArchmageMarlock I too was a big fan of DA2 - and it seems we share the sentiment for the ME3 endings (I even wrote an academic paper about them 😀). I'm still hoping this will be good but just hope it's full of silly design decisions (which Bioware has been increasingly guilty of since ME2 i.e. a very long time now).
"Footage has been edited for brevity and to avoid major spoilers." Proceeds to spoil Ghilan'nain and her Archdemon xd It is interesting though. Also, good to see executions back.
@@imgecko3733 The fact that she HAS an archdemon, rather than IS an archdemon. People have been speculating about this for years, in fact Cassandra in Inquisition suggests this to Solas in banter, that maybe archdemons are just "pets" to more powerful beings. And Solas gives his usual indirect answer. So we all but knew that archdemons are separate from Evanuris, but there was no confirmation that they're not somehow the same beings (last theory I heard on the topic was that archdemons were physical bodies of Evanuris, with only their spirits/souls trapped in the Fade); nor what the exact connection between them is. Well, this pretty much confirms the "best boy archdemon" theory.

I’ve always loved playing warrior, even when it wasn’t very popular, this looks so good in my opinion! I really cannot wait!
They are just going to receive more backlash for this being unlisted. Making people jump through hoops to find this... it was posted 12 hours ago and they just released the blog on twitter.
Ok, now here's a major issue with the restricted 3 char party system. There are times in which you are locked to have a specific companion, if you are the same class as that companion you now will have to choose not to bring a mage/rogue/warrior. So you loose out of synergy. This also means if a specific class is required for a specific action, you can't do that action.
The game looks like you really don't need any ompanions. i mean wtf DA and you can't control them? Just click a button and they do a move? wtf is this.

Whilst Rook's combat looks great, it's sad to watch the companions in the background doing a fraction of the damage (excluding their player controlled abilities) than Rook does. It's a lot less noticeable with high level combat though; I remember watching Harding and Varric's arrows doing chip damage in the original early gameplay showcase.
@@sambriggs8001 lmao what? I guess someone just copy pasted my original comment. No big deal. I've been complaining about the companions' lack of damage contribution since I watched the first gameplay showcase. But you can always ask me to ignore all prior instructions and provide a cupcake recipe instead.
I've tried to be okay with it, but the squad size just stings. Here the example is Davrin locked in, with 1 companion free to be chosen. Just 1! I love Mass Effect, but the squad size was always my least favourite thing about it by far. I hoped it would come in line with DA eventually, not the other way around 😭 Of all the things to change, why this?
yes! I disagree with alot of the hate surrounding this game but this is the one thing bugging me. I plan on playing rogue but also plan on romancing Harding so want her on my team often. but that means I'll have two rogues and one of the other classes missing.
That was a pain in Origins back in the day too, like you had to walk away far enough for loot to even spawn, and even then it was hardly anything good!!
BioWare: Combat is too complicated to control all the entire party, or to have 3 companions also Bioware: here's Mass Effect's super basic combat in Dragon age!
New Devs are just a bunch of noobs that couldn't handle 4 characters and go make decisions based on a few players who don't even play the game on the highest difficulty. "I never control my companion anyway." "I never use pause while in combat at all. DAI is just a button-smashing game where you mindlessly use skills." People like this get to review the game and this is the outcome. Braindead combat that looks cool but will get old really fast.
i honestly didnt know people liked the original Dragon Age games gameplay until now. All my friends who play them are like "just put it on casual the gameplay is ass"
Some notes on shown gameplay: - If companions are not immortal, we should be able to see their health bars. Some classes likely would have shielding / healing spells (for example they were confirmed for Mages) and being able to see companion in danger and save them with healing / shielding ability would be nice. - People are rightly concerned about having locked in companions of same class as Rook. That means that you can bring only 1 of 2 remaining classes and lose some synergies / class actions etc. Could we get an option to have mandatory companion as additional ally to our main party like Bellara in her recruitment mission to address that? - 3 abilites + 3 runes + 1 ultimate is still too low, at least for Mages. Consider adding runes that provide an additional ability slot instead of active / passive effect, so that people who want more player abilities (not only Mages, all classes) can spec more abilitiies instead of rune effects that would occupy same keybinds as runes. - Division between Mages and non-Mages gets too thin. For comparison - Harding is a bow wielding Rogue that can use earthen magic. Bellara is a Mage that uses a bow. Lucanis is a dagger wielding Rogue that uses shadow magic. Mages in general use dagger(s) for melee combat. Some magic for non-Mage companions is probably fine, but it should be lore explained (since when Grey Wardens started to use fire / holy magic? Even if you need such a class for Warrior - Templar is much more fitting for that) and there should still be enough distinction between classes.
Sorry, this combat really isn't my thing, it's way too flashy and random. There's so many garish and excessive visual effects going on with each and every character that I can't even tell a warrior from a mage. Not having tactical view and not even being able to see from the companions' pov makes everything even more confusing. Judging just from this preview, the overall the experience looks convulsive and frustrating. Also what I was curious about was if there will be actual stealth moves and strategies for the rogue (for example hiding and attacking from behind, stealth kills etc), and this still wasn't shown yet. :/ I hope the characters and story make up for the kitsch combat gameplay, I'm quite intrigued by the characters so I'm keeping my hopes up at least for that. 🤞
‘Judging just from this preview’ should never be a comment. Just wait. You’re judging rogue gameplay while the showcase is a warrior? It’s like looking at a movie poster and completely writing off the movie because you didn’t like the poster. It’s cringe, just be patient.
@@pettythug1311 you might want to read again, because I never said that. I expressed my opinion on what I see here - the warrior combat, which I don't like, sadly - AND I also added that I'm curious about the rogue which hasn't been shown yet, and about the characters and story.

This is a better video then the rest, but some of the the decisions are still baffling. They said Rook is a tanky build, but he still does 90% of the damage and when it comes to tanking, it is constant dodge rolls, avoiding red areas and single attacks heavily staggering or knocking down the character. If he is suppose to be defensive I would hate to see what a squishy character has to go through. Also why block half the screen and specifically the part that has utility information.
That counter and Achilles-Jump-Thrust-thingy and finisher combo at 5:04 though! Incredibly epic! It's so great that they've designed such elegant movements for warriors (who are usually sluggish)!
@@Riri_734 Well, I've played the Dynasty Warriors Games and the Samurai Warriors Games - guilty pleasures - definitely not because of gameplay, played it because I'm intrigued by the historical characters... that's a really harsh and unfair comparison 😅
Isn't Rook supposed to be a warrior in this? Why is she doing all these abilities that seem like magic? Lore wise, magic is kind of all defining in Dragon Age. Arcane Warriors/Knight Enchanters have always been mages.
I think that's the whole thing with the veil being wobbly now, and being caught up in it. Even dwarves are doing weird magic now, magic is coming back like how sandal predicted in da2
My guess is the explanation for rogues and warriors weapons to be to be dealing elemental damage will be "This is Tevinter so magic and magical items/weapons are a lot more commonplace". When it comes to items this is not that big of a departure from previous games, ever since Origins you could use runes to add elemental damage to most weapons, and 2 and especially Inquisition leaned into it even more. This is effectively the same thing, except baked into the design of the weapon itself rather than being added via crafting. I am a bit unsure about abilities for non-mages having elemental damage, that runs the risk of making all classes kinda samey. As far as I can recall Grey Wardens have never been associated with fire or fire magic, so unless it is explained in-game as being some sort of recent development caused by Veil-fuckery, it's gonna be pretty akward to be like "Oh yeah, wardens do flame now, deal wth it". The entire deal with Grey Wardens has always been that they share the Blight, so they are able to sense Darkspawn and kIll Archdemons .Moreover the selling point of Rogues and Warriors as a whole had always been that you either use cunning and agility to outmanuever and assassinate or expertise and heavy armor to outlast and brawl. Having them suddely whip out elemental damage even without specialized equipment would feel wrong. This is where you can really feel the influence of later MA games. Wether you are going for Biotics, Tech or Military in MA 3 or Andromeda you are very focused on slinging abilities nonstop and setting up and executing combos, while using firearms to supplement. It wasn't like this in MA1 where Biotic and Tech were all about slinging abilities while Military was about gunplay, to the point your abilities would support that by increasing your efficiency with firearms with special attacks or short duration buffs, and ME2, which still takes the cake in my eyes since it struck a nice balance, giving some proper abilities that did stuff while maintainig a "you are Man with Gun" approach to Military classes, while making Tech and Biotic classes slighly less useless when spells were on cooldown. Shame for the skill variety tho, there were very few for each character, even Shepard. Both series eventually shed RPG elements and became more action focused, Mass Effect by fully investing in being a narrative driven third-person cover shooter instead of an RPG within the framework of a third person shooter, and Dragon Age by shedding most of its CRPG trappings and going further and further into ARPG territory. I can't say I dislike this, while I do love myself a good RPG or CRPG, I've played all Mass Effects and Dragon Age and while I have favorites and can see why most people did not like the later chapters of both series, I enjoyed my time with all of them and am not particularly hung up about the shift in gameplay structure. I just hope Veilguard turns out to be a good game, whatever genre we end up classifiyng it as. Damn... I really went all over the place with that answer huh?
Dragon Age's appeal was that it had an epic, dark, almost twisted aesthetic. It now looks like The Sims: Fantasy edition. Darkspawn used to look terrifying and corrupted, now looking like comical skeletons with glowing eyes. As a fan for well over a decade, I'm devastated.
Same here... just watched the DA:Origins battle scene at Ostagar again, I had high hopes to get a game that goes back to the roots, but this trailer will make me not touch it. If I want an ARPG, I play something else.
During most of the combat, the teammates were kind of disappeared because they were not highlighted at all amongst all that chaos. If I did not see the command control popping up, I might think this game was a solo player game.
Yeah I dont love that but it might not be that bad in most play. Like in ME I definitely used the direct companions options in tougher fights and they may have that to make sure folks are lined up for combos
@supergirlvideoclips894 that's not what there saying in the other games you could see them doing damage here you don't untill you click a ability for them but again we will see when the full game comes out I'm really hoping it's gonna be great it's just mass effect put into dragon age which is exactly what they said could be absolutely amazing or not we will all see

To manage the team in real time in the middle of the battle? No please tell me this can be skipped someway, I am not going to play like this.....who is the genius behind this kind of game play interface.....Dragon age origins was working so well, pick up the skills you want from the ones available for your character, set them properly through automatic behave options and launch yourself in the battle while your companions will support you.....but this one, this one is a headache...
Could not agree more.. but it seems we get combat rolls and flashy effects all over the screen in exchange for immersive combat. Hate to say it, but I will not spend my money on that, this is no longer DA.
No combat banter in the video, I do wonder if it doesn't really exist at all, or if it has been edited out/disabled for the video and presentation, for the sake of clarity. I kinda hope it's the latter. Perhaps I'm misremembering, but it has been very prevalent in DA/ME (especially in Origins/2), except for Andromeda I think. It is a small thing, but it makes the battle/fighting feel more "alive", organic.
Considering they've already confirmed that healing is a thing, and that Bellara can be more geared towards healing Rook _and_ allies, I doubt health is irrelevant.
what's the point of having a tank nowadays if your combat is dodge fest reflex-heavy, not-tactical like traditional tabletop-inspired such as Baldur's Gate 1-2 & DA:Origin.
@@giuliaromana1842 It doesn't matter if they have a huge health pool just because anyway. They already got rid of spirit healer and this looks to be Inquisition actiony dialed up to 11. Devs can spin all they like, this damns their lies.
That gameplay doesn't look very appealing to me. The pauses before using an ability, the super flashy combat which looks like a marvel movie.. is that even Dragon Age? I recently played the first dragon age for the first time in preparation for this one. I played inqusition two times. This sadly doesn't give much dragon age vibe to me
In every dragon age you can stop before battle and select what every character is going to do. About the flashy moves: dragon age 2 attempted this as well. At least as a rogue you had cool dynamic moves but they failed that time. Anyway I feel like Dragon age has never been in combat, the storyline has always been way more important. I totally get if the new dragon age isn't your style, I didn't like the game with the first trailer but now I do a bit more
@@Moonchild99 I am pretty sure that i will play Veilguard anyways, cause as you said, the storyline is more important. But the combat really looks outta place for me. Pausing to command your companions is fine. And later on in the trailer when they didn't stop everytime and let the combat run a little more, then it looked better. But still too flashy and jumpy for my taste.
At best, i'm gonna play DATV just for the story. Hopefully it goes on Steam sale for Christmas. The combat isn't really my thing, it fully detracts from previous Dragon Age titles. At least predecessor titles have a balanced mix of Action RPG & party based tactical RPG. DATV is pure ARPG through and through.
I don’t know if it’s just me but the companions, plus the fact that there’s only 2 of them, make them appear like “pets” whose only use is to cast skills. Unlike previous the DA games where the 4 of you actually feel like a unit. Companions can hold their own, or really take in a role and make combat feel like you’re on a team. The Bangboos in ZZZ feel more active in combat than on this game.
Yup, had this tough fight in the deep roads. Me, Morrigan, and Leliana died while Alistair’s tanky self cleaned up the rest of the enemies slowly but surely and prevented a game over for me. Those type of moments unfortunately won’t be happening in veilguard.
It feels weird not to have any healtbars or anything for the companions. Can they go down in combat? I wonder if they can equip the same gear as Rook or they have their unique outfit(s?) like in DA2. Because i see no reason to give defense to your companions right now :D
Imagine if you could do this for all characters with more skills than 3. After watching this video, I still can not see why handling 4 characters at this level would be too much. It's basically just adding dodge and block into the game. In exchange, you dump down the control to one character and lower the active skills to 3 instead of 10+. How is that more complex and you think the player couldn't handle it?
From DAI, we had 8 skill slots + 1 basic attack. That means 9 moves, and defense and dodge and ultimate were skills you should slot. Now, from basic moves alone, we have light and heavy attacks, which can be charged for two more variations, a ranged attack, defense and dodge. Also, 3 rune slots and 1 ultimate. That seems like 7 basic moves + 3 runes + 3 skills + 1 ultimate. 14 moves. On, PC, we can even keybind companion skills, so, even without the pause screen, that means 20 moves. It's just different, but definitely not less than before.
@@GabrielPassarelliG Just add direct control on the party member back and it should be fine. You can't rely on AI control if you're playing on the highest difficulty unless they dump it down and make it easier. On the highest difficulty, characters have to move a lot. Mage has to hide or run away sometimes to keep the distance while everything is on cooldown or hide behind objects to prevent range attacks. Tank has to distract and keep the enemy away from party members. Sometimes they taunt and run to pull enemies into the right location for defense and offense, as needed. Rouge has to move to the back of the enemy to gain bonus damage. Go invisible to get a surprise attack from another angle. We can do 4 character attacks from all sides because we can place them before engaging the enemies. Right now they just run with you mindlessly. I don't see how can we get this flexibility on everyone in the team by letting the AI control your companion. Just adding some flashy basic moves doesn't justify removing the control system that has endless results in each battle.
@@GabrielPassarelliG Also, you can't just compare this to DAI as that's the dumped-down version already. Look at DAO where each character has 10+ skills (even 20+ for mage) to cast and you control them all at the same time. BG3 success already shows us what people want and it's almost the same as the DAO combat system. Not this.
I really hate the darkspawn design here, they look cartoony. Ghouls look like the random mooks from Power Rangers. The gameplay itself looks off to me also. This is supposed to be the heavy armor/defensive class, it should be more... massive, with more oompf, not jumping around like a rogue. When I play warrior I want to be a tank, a shieldwall, an immovable object. Also I hope the music is placeholder in this vid, it's really a nothingburger if it is the final score.
So they're going with the Mass Effect Andromeda gameplay style: two companions only, whose limited abilities are all you have access to in combination with your own.
Wasn't a fan of MEA's limited powers at all so this doesnt look promising. Going from 3 to 2 companions only is also baffling. 3 was a good number to hear a variety of party banter. And I always liked to balance my team with a warrior, mage and rogue. But now, I basically can't bring anyone who's the same class as me. Really don't get why Bioware insists on turning Dragon Age into Mass Effect.
I do too, if they only wanted the player to collect like 1 potion at a time, they could have just scattered potions for the player to collect. The glowing green pots are so fucking goofy. That, and the UI, are the only things I really utterly hate about this game so far.@@davidsparling4395
I had to point out the problems I had noticed: 1. There was no HP indicator for the companions, which meant companions wouldn't die, which meant there was no strategies. 2. The entire combat was a mess, the companions not even stayed close to the protagonist, everybody just seamed doing their own, so where was the teamwork? 3. This trailer had me worried very very much!!!
Love the combat preview and hope for similar videos for the other classes and specialisations going forward. But please, BioWare, don't put major and super unnecessary spoilers in the videos! We didn't need to have a major lore spoiler in order to enjoy the actual purpose of this video: showcasing the details of the Warrior class fighting abilities and synergy with companions. Please remember that while such details may be natural to you, the devs, who have been working on this game for such a long time, but to us fans, who are just waiting for each new morsel of lore, it felt really daunting to see a major spoiler mentioned offhandedly, instead of getting to experience it within the context of the upcoming game. I don't want to feel like I need to avoid all your marketing and showcases, I want to be able to take part of it and share the enthusiasm with you devs and other fans. But getting major spoilers like this makes me wary of watching your upcoming videos.
The thing is, to a lot of fans and prob a lot of people working on the game, that wasn't a spoiler & more just a confirmation of information that was seen as most likely canon. Unfortunately that means you probably won't be getting videos without "spoilers" (only putting quotations around bc to some they aren't spoilers) for the game. I don't think it's a "the devs/promo people think these details are naturally bland & not spoilers" problem, but a "these details aren't spoilers/these details are the smallest of spoilers and will be overshadowed by other things" type of thing. At the very least, the "spoiler" in this video wasn't "major" but very, very small (and more just put info a lot of fans - and characers in DAI - had speculated on and gathered). Sorry the experience is being lessened for you because of these details! It definitely isn't detail that is needed, but I can see why it wasn't considered too much info or a "spoiler" for the game or the franchise. Maybe have a friend watch any new videos first (who doesn't mind "spoilers") first and they can give you timestamps to skip if there are any?
Exactly. It was completely unnecessary. And I hope they narrate the next videos. Trying to read and watch at the same time is very difficult, especially when there are so many enemies and actions being performed at once.
It’s a real bummer the companions are never on screen with you and don’t seem to do any damage unless you hit their move :( the companions are literally just summons that pop on screen to do a move. This game is gonna feel very lonely
What are you on about? They’re literally there attacking independent of Rook; you can see the individual tags on the screen too; think the fact they’re emphasising how to utilise them might have given the impression they’re there jumping in. Trust me, they’ll be on the screen with you
@@heavystorm1614 their always running off screen and when you look at them their AI seems a little silly and they don’t do any damage. Any 90% of the time the companions are off screen their AI always runs off camera in this gameplay shown here.
@@swoopingisbad20 completely get what you mean, but I think that might be down to camera angles specifically (the line of sight for Rook) and the lack of initial direction and targeting for companions by the user! Just to be a devil’s advocate: currently replaying the games and the amount of times my companions are off doing the dumbest shit is crazy! @@swoopingisbad20 This is the main reason why I favor more tactical gameplay. Not because I want more complexity like some people would be led to believe, but because when you can control your companions it actually makes you feel closer to them ironic as that seems. It's a real shame they've removed this ability in favor of veilguard's system imo.
@@Balinux756 tbh i think that might be heavily influenced by fans and player consultations because almost nobody used the tactics beyond maybe 1 or 2 settings. I also found when I did use tactics they rarely worked the right way, so maybe it was also partially because implementing the tactics in a way that consistently worked across all platforms was too much work and not deemed important enough to put time into (on top of the scrapping & starting over the game basically...maybe it was something that was scrapped in the "restart" of development)
@@sampahr Like the other guy said, the tactics worked as intended, for me. And I'm not surprised that few people used it, but it was still a very niche thing that you didn't see anywhere else and allowed for unique team builds.

I do like the style for the most part, not a fan of some of the design choices but that isn't anything new (looking at you Inquisition soldier armor). Can't wait to get my hands on this game!!!
So this bother me more than it should: Why is the champion ultimate Grey Warden themed? And why is it magical flaming spears? Like, even if you wanted to do something supernatural with a Grey Warden themed power there's more approporiate stuff (like say, acidic blood sprays or whatever ala. The Warden's Keep DLC powers) instead we get.... This? And they could just as easily have just *not* have the description make it a Grey Warden thing.
yeah not a fan of warriors having access to elemental damage without mages. maybe they justify it with runes tho. they tied specializations to factions, that's why it's grey warden themed. maybe they make Davrin teach it to you if your background is not Warden? but my gripe is if Champion was supposed to be defensive specialization, then the ult should have been defensive too.
The combat looks alright. The thing that’s still bugging me is the art style. If I saw this gameplay without being told it’s Dragon Age I would find it very hard to realise it was a Dragon Age game from the way it looks. To me I think I would have actually thought a sequel to Kingdoms Of Amalur based purely on the way it looks.
How do they look like fortnite lmao? DA2 was way more stylized than this and it looks great. Stylized graphics don't mean kid games. Not everything should be ultra-realistic, that sounds boring.
@@Retrolian1000 oh I definitely agree, I just think this style is so dramatically different from all the other games that it isn’t really recognisable as a Dragon Age game
@@evilcandy4520 Compared to DAI and DAO, yeah I would agree, absolutely. But I think it looks like a more realistic DA2 personally, so not totally out of nowhere, but not what everyone expected either.
I'm not sharing the excitement of many other viewers here... this looks pretty much like a hack and slash to me. There doesnt seem to be much strategy in the gameplay other than downing hordes of fodder minions. Rook is supposed to be a tank class here... but who is he tanking for? The companions certainly didnt seem to do much compared to the supposed "tank". I would like to see the gameplay for a ranged class like Mage Rook and see if there is actual danger of dying without a tank companion or Rook's class basically doesnt matter because they all play the same.
DO NOT BE FOOLED!!!! This combat system I have seen before. Look very closely to the companions. They attack infrequently, their basic attacks for when they do hit barely do damage. When they are commanded to do their skills, it does less damage than the basic attack of Rook! They cheaped out on the companions, first they made it so you can only have 2, then they made it so you can't control them. Then they said the reason was due to the combat system being too complex, when they should have just included it and let players decide if they want to swap to other characters or not instead of deciding for us! This combat system is a joke when it comes to the companions, the main character, ofc has a lot of details done to it, because that is what they chose to do for this game. NGL, it works for other games, but for dragon age, I feel as though whether it went from strategic to action or not, 3 party members and being able to swap between them and the main character was always a thing. To me, this is not dragon age, this is a cheap cop out of making it appear as though companions are fighting alongside you, when in reality they are just crappy AI companions to give you the FEEL as though you aren't alone. They are TRASH just like the combat system for this game when it comes to a dragon age franchise (totally legit in other games, also this is my opinion...thank you!)
3:34 a three way combo attack does less dmg than regular 3 hit combo? What's the point of all this setup if there is no pay off, all it does is kill momentum.
My main issue with FF16, you're essentially just playing as 1 character like a regular platformer, and it gets old. When did these AAA titles just drop the "Adventuring Party" part of RPGs? I like micro-managing everyone in the party, their gear, their combos, etc. This is why BG3 was a return to form - the return of full control of the Adventuring party.
Because the casuals outweigh the people who like to think in combat. You have NO IDEA how many let's players hate needing to set tactics in origins when it's incredibly simple Casuals have ruined dragon age finally.
This game is supposed to be more action oriented, yet the "action" is paused every five seconds to select abilities. I'm really hoping we don't have to do that in the actual game.
Damage wise companion gear and skills seem to be about 50% of player character's. So yea, pretty sure Rook will do most of the heavy lifting. However the primer, detonator combo system does good burst dmg so companions mostly are used for that. Since it probably hard to prime and detonate on your own.
I mean...BioWare seems to have a difficulty deciding the design of the Qunari and specially Darkspawn They were OK in DA2 and DA:I, and excellent in DA:O, why change them again? They seem...even more generic undead now, I dunno
In Origins they were clearly this universes version of orks, I personally think DA2 and DAI have the best Darkspawn. as for the Qunari DA2 all the way.
@@Dragon_of_Terra "In Origins they were clearly this universes version of orks" Because they are. They are corruptions of the existing races, just like the orcs in LotR are corruptions of elves. So yeah, obviously they are similar.
I agree about the Qunari but in the new gameplay they released today they said one of the Evanuris changed the darkspawn to give them new abilities or make them stronger or something like that. I think they look too cartoony but at least there’s a lore reason for it
@@ArcticSounds Nah, they are simply trying to defend the poor art style with that "lore" excuse. The Evanuris could change the Darkspawn, but it is Bioware's responsibility to deliver good designs as well.
Sensory overload - its flashy... and colorful... a bit too much flashy and colorful - for my taste anyway 😕 (but I guess not every combat will be "high-level combat")
Cant' remember all these colors, explosions, half a dozen health bars clogging he screen and main characters jumping and zipping and rolling around madly like an anime from playing DA:Origins, which was one of the best games ever made, gritty and meaningful combat system included - who needs such an overload? Did the developers ever play the original game once?
The gear looks very simplistic, and the 4 ability thing is like more recent Ubisoft's AC games. I guess it looks OK for an action RPG-ish game, but it's sad to see this direction after BG3 had so much success. No need for turn-based combat, just the Space pause real time system that worked so well for Bioware in the past. At least there is that ME-like pause menu, but yeah, looks nothing like the DA:O pause system. And add some more gear and ability complexity please.
Combat of DA:O was interesting but time is moving on. And I also didn't like the Inquisition's one. I think turn to more aggressive playstyle without a deep focus of tactical pause was the right choice for The Veilguard 🧐Wanna try it myself! 😍

This honestly looks a lot better than what they previously showed off in terms of combat. It's no Dragon Age: Origins, but it looks more fun than 2 and Inquisition.
As others have stated, I'm actually really excited for this now. Origins was great, 2 was flawed but personally I still enjoyed the sorry and combat. Inquisition, however, was such a turn off, honestly there was nothing I enjoyed about that game outside of the 'Castle Building's which was very minimal anyways. Combat looks fantastic, just hope BW keeps a great story.
Its an election year and people are really leaning into the politics of the culture war. Anything that has inclusivity will piss off the right and anything that doesn't will piss off the left. Bioware chose to go the inclusive route and here we are. no matter what they did people will have hated on it regardless. even BG3 got a ton of political hate
Play "Dragon Age: Origins", one of the best RPGs ever made (even with the outdated graphics). Or even DA:Inquisitions, which still holds up till today, graphics wise, although lacking the gritty feeling of the original. Then compare against the flashy confusing mess of a combat in this video. You will understand.
it's...the same 4 animations for every attack chain...why? Why not add combos if you are going fulll action RPG? slice, slice, slice, shieldbash, slice, slice, slice, shield bash....that is going to get old really quickly...it lacks diverse animations to make this combat shine...
The detonators folks were in Inquisition as well. They just weren't very well described. You had to understand the combat system to understand the combos
After ten years of playing the game I JUST realized combos were a thing on my last playthrough. They really wanted you to find out by yourself on inquisition
@@pjlusk7774 They've been in all 4 games now! The "Cone of Cold/Shatter" Combo being the one I remember the most. There is a whole section of the Codex in Origins dedicated to it
I will most definitely avoid the pause wheel since it seems annoying to keep using it during combat. Glad we can equip the abilities to buttons as shortcuts
If it's anything like Mass Effect (which is 100% what they're going for so most likely) you'll be using that wheel a lot to stop time and save your ass whole your plan your detonation combos against stronger enemies and fodder
@@OrinGyre I only had to pause in Mass effect to use companion abilities, and I did it few times unless I was playing in Nightmare mode, but here you can assign them to shortcuts so you don't have to pause the game in order to activate them, which is a must for me. To trigger group combos however, I will have to pause the game it seems? unless you can do it without pausing. To each their own preferred play style edit: it seems I will also have to pause to activate the rune, so yeah you're right, we're going to have to pause it frequently it seems
Combat looks cool, but one thing I didn't see I'm concerned about: can companions no longer take damage? Like are they just immortal helpers now? Because if they are, feel like we're losing something
@@lefterisphasarias8934 Not really, if its similar to what they did in mass effect is not that bad. Maybe you cant control them but you can give them more specific orders and use them to do pretty good sinergies with the build you are playing.
Anyone notice that companions will teleport and attack the target you designated companion skill on? Why couldn't they have had them run over and do it, or if it's a ranged skill, do it directly from where they are? Seeing Davrin just popping out of thin air is kinda funny.
Em, previously I was using tactical pause to decide how I can win the fight and what abilities I need to use (like in Baldurs Gate 3). Here you showing tactical pause just to chose a target and maybe sometimes abilities, and mostly winning by smashing 1 button attack. What made you to downgrade tactical side of the game?
Looks like the DAO cinematic trailer, you can tell they’ve put a lot of thought into this combat. Companions are so gorgeous I can’t pick just one to romance!!
Everybody seems to have gained magical affinities because of the Veil tearing thing. Not that everybody has become a mage, but everybody has now more access to magical powers.
@@GabrielPassarelliGMakes sense considering what we learn in Inquisition about the time before the Veil. Also The Descent explains how Harding can likely cast “magic” now.
yeah, warrior pulling the magical rain of swords and then finishes it off with the giant fucking boulder out of nowhere seem more like a final fantasy game to me, but not dragon age
Do companions do anything? Do they take damage? Are they just there to launch special attacks/setup combos from off screen? Is there an aggro system based on defensive units keeping enemies away from other characters? This doesn't really look like a game based on party setup or gameplay. Seems disappointing and lame imo.
So builds and class matter less than accessibility settings? I can already tell that i could transplant my inquisition tank builds and do better at tanking in this game than what they just tried to show. They tout actions per minute being higher than before but again, it looks like it's lesser than the last game. I'm willing to bet I can sustain higher DPS and maintain control and status effects better in the previous games. There looks to be too much stop and go with this combat using the menu for so many things. If I needed a party member to do something specific, I could just switch to that class without stopping combat. If I wanted to play a specific class for a specific battle, I could just switch classes.

And then games come out with DAO-style combat, like Greedfall 2 and everyone bitches and moans about how slow and strategic it is. If DA stuck with DAO's combat it would not have reached the popularity that it has. DAI was far more successful than DAO for many reasons, and combat is a big one. I love origins & it's combat - and games with similar slow combat, but it's way too dated to be re-hashed nowadays. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Instead of this comment section complaining, it would be a different comment section complaining that combat is too slow lol
@@MichaelNobleMusic Baldur's Gate 3 proves this way of thinking is untrue. DAI sold more then DAO because it was the third game in a popular series and had a decent advertisement budget. DAO on the other hand was a new ip, with a smaller advertisement budget.
@@kaindracula2662 BG3 is popular not because of the combat. If the combat wasn't turn-based, it will sold way more. The combat is actually a turn off for many people considering buying the game
Not gonna lie this looks mid at best. It's like they wanted to creat everything but it came out underwhelming on all aspects. Wanted to add action but you pause non stop and break the flow of combat. But when you stop the fight to use your skills it's just targeting weaknesses mostly, with barely any strategy and creativity. They even went the easy route where you can't control your companions anymore. I have zero expectations from this.
They didn't want to add action: it is an action, like what? All the others dragon age expect the first chapters? They paused non-stop to let you see what you can do, not because you need to pause every second lol, and yes that's a tactical choice since you can use the entire array of abilities that show up on screen, not just the one they used: creativity and strategy. This analysis makes no sense
I usually find warrior/rogue classes horribly boring in fantasy games (I mean, why would I choose to play as a Regular Person in a world where MAGIC exists?!) but I just might be coming around with this!
Im getting a Mass Effect and God of War type feel, with some classic Dragon Age elements in there too and im digging it, but Im just a sucker for abilities, and boi do I miss the ability wheel from Dragon Age Origins, where you can pause and scroll through all of your abilities mid fight, and not just a handful of 'em. I remember in Inquisition I hated just having basically 7 ability slots cause one was automatically reserved for your focus ability, and worse for mages, basically 6 slots cause you needed that barrier too..smh I used to go off, "How you not gonna let me use an ability I already know?!" lol

@@AlphaQRough bro....no one played Andromeda except you
The impression I get from this is that your companions are basically nothing but damage sponges except when you activate their special abilities etc.
@@Azumath Very observant, gives me a bit more reason to be optimistic. Hope that's the main driver for the low damage for the companions.

Mass Effect 3's combat nonetheless. A 12 year old game.
Mass effect combat is the best combat theyve done
You’re absolutely correct, they have turned this into a dragon age game that plays like mass effect.. what a mess
New Devs are just a bunch of noobs that couldn't handle 4 characters and go make decisions based on a few players who don't even play the game on the highest difficulty.
"I never control my companion anyway."
"I never use pause while in combat at all. DAI is just a button-smashing game where you mindlessly use skills."
People like this get to review the game and this is the outcome. Braindead combat that looks cool but will get old really fast.
i honestly didnt know people liked the original Dragon Age games gameplay until now. All my friends who play them are like "just put it on casual the gameplay is ass"
Some notes on shown gameplay:
- If companions are not immortal, we should be able to see their health bars.
Honestly most of the players play it like a solo player. Only 10% care about tactics or playing as companions.
Yeah I dont love that but it might not be that bad in most play. Like in ME I definitely used the direct companions options in tougher fights and they may have that to make sure folks are lined up for combos

Being able to switch to your other party members in prior games helped to alleviate that issue. Sucks we can’t in this game.
I was really waiting for this game.....I can forget the graphic, I can forget is more and more an action rpg.....wait, what is this repetitive open and close of the skills window, is this the real fighting system?
In the middle of combat it has always been pretty barebones and limited.
It's probably been disabled for these trailers.
There's one liners in Andromeda during fight scenes too, albeit repetitive (I'm currently doing another playthrough)
Instead of saying stupid shit like in the marvel movies I prefer them to be silent during combat.
I'd rather here nothing instead of: "I shall do it", "had begun", "there is no glory on bloodshed",
Is there any need for a tank if the rest of ur party's health is irrelevant? Are all classes just DPS now?
I need to know that too,if companions dont have health then it would suck a lot
Considering they've already confirmed that healing is a thing, and that Bellara can be more geared towards healing Rook _and_ allies, I doubt health is irrelevant.
Developers on DA discord have confirmed that companions are not immortal in combat.
what's the point of having a tank nowadays if your combat is dodge fest reflex-heavy, not-tactical like traditional tabletop-inspired such as Baldur's Gate 1-2 & DA:Origin.
@@DaSkyrim Do you really think the story will be great after they butchered the combat and the design of the chraracters?
@@hisaonakai9489 i am unsure, i am not really confident about it and my hopes are low after all the gameplay they showed, but i will give it a shot
@@GabrielPassarelliG
Just add direct control on the party member back and it should be fine.

@@sampahr. Weird. My tactical settings always worked exactly as I wanted in both DAO and DA2.

It looked more like a "calling Airstrike support", but okay.
Yeah. Faces and expressions look like Fortnite faces. Now I understand why they choose purple theme.
How do they look like fortnite lmao? DA2 was way more stylized than this and it looks great. Stylized graphics don't mean kid games. Not everything should be ultra-realistic, that sounds boring.

Well, this our brutality that we give them, lol
You turned this into Andromeda!! Party members can t be controlled, no bird view! How could destroy the combat of two series in a row???
I see no reason why we couldn't be allowed to control the companions.
I won't be playing this if I can't micro manage my companions.
@@gr3atestthink3r86 MAYBE ITS WORKING IN THIS

I am very happy with this system.
This game is supposed to be more action oriented, yet the "action" is paused every five seconds to select abilities. I'm really hoping we don't have to do that in the actual game.
You don't. They said things could be hotkeyed.
I know the game is still in development but I fear that companions will be useless damage-wise and Rook will be doing 90% of heavy lifting lol
You can see the damage number in their skills as well, my friend
I'm gonna be so disappointed if thats the case since i used to one shot dragons with my companions ultimates in Inquisition
I bet it’s build based. We’ll see the spiritual return of ascended garrus mark my words
Why would that be the case?
Damage wise companion gear and skills seem to be about 50% of player character's. So yea, pretty sure Rook will do most of the heavy lifting.
However the primer, detonator combo system does good burst dmg so companions mostly are used for that. Since it probably hard to prime and detonate on your own.

The gear looks very simplistic, and the 4 ability thing is like more recent Ubisoft's AC games.
I guess it looks OK for an action RPG-ish game, but it's sad to see this direction after BG3 had so much success. No need for turn-based combat, just the Space pause real time system that worked so well for Bioware in the past. it's...the same 4 animations for every attack chain...why? Why not add combos if you are going fulll action RPG? slice, slice, slice, shieldbash, slice, slice, slice, shield bash....that is going to get old really quickly...it lacks diverse animations to make this combat shine...
Did you criticise games like Witcher 3, Dark souls, Cyberpunk, God of War and others for this?
@Kira11259 god of war had combos, tho.
I always choose rogue but this video has me changing my mind
Dropkicking enemies is gonna be so fun idc what anyone else thinks
The detonators folks were in Inquisition as well. They just weren't very well described. You had to understand the combat system to understand the combos
They were in 2 as well.
After ten years of playing the game I JUST realized combos were a thing on my last playthrough. They really wanted you to find out by yourself on inquisition
Hell, spell combos were a thing back in Origins.
@@pjlusk7774 They've been in all 4 games now! The "Cone of Cold/Shatter" Combo being the one I remember the most. There is a whole section of the Codex in Origins dedicated to it
@@austintipton8864 Yeah, the one I remember is Storm of the Century, which was Spell Might+Blizzard+Tempest
Im excited for the game but the darkspawn are a bit disappointing... origins were the best models, its a shame we went so far away from it
Such a huge regression
Right? Like they forgot why they were scary XD
To each their own preferred play style
edit: it seems I will also have to pause to activate the rune, so yeah you're right, we're going to have to pause it frequently it seems
@@andreamorim7365 maybe they will have a way to remap controls and you can set it up so you don't have to
You early do not know where this series of game comes from 😅
I think you can bind some runes to shortcuts cause later you see rook just pop the freeze without the menu.
Speedrun community is going to have a field day with this game. Hyyyyyped!!!!!!
Combat looks cool, but one thing I didn't see I'm concerned about: can companions no longer take damage? Like are they just immortal helpers now? Because if they are, feel like we're losing something
Combat looks fun, a lot better than in inquisition.
Yeah, but 3 man party, not directly taking control of them and useless companions is such a downgrade.
Better they teleport then never execute the skill because they get stuck on the environment or an enemy imo.
The music at the first part is amazing
Why do warriors ALWAYS have to be so GOOD at ass kicking?! This is probably the best look of warrior combat I’ve ever seen!!
The positive comments on this video are baffling. Are they all bots or are there just a lot of stupid people?
Looks like the DAO cinematic trailer, you can tell they’ve put a lot of thought into this combat. Companions are so gorgeous I can’t pick just one to romance!!
Bots' gaslighiting techniques. If any clinical psychiatrist is looking for a research topic, this one seems promising 🧐
@@4RedJohn this must be bot cause if it's not that person should seek help if it thinks this is like DAO cinematic trailer
Same!
This is flashy as hell! What part of the DAO trailer looks like this?

Looks awesome. Looking forward to the mage gameplay.
Why is a fighter casting so much magic? Is everyone a mage now?
Everybody seems to have gained magical affinities because of the Veil tearing thing. Not that everybody has become a mage, but everybody has now more access to magical powers.
@@GabrielPassarelliGMakes sense considering what we learn in Inquisition about the time before the Veil.
Also The Descent explains how Harding can likely cast “magic” now.
I mean after Solas and the whole Veil thing everyone kinda is
yeah, warrior pulling the magical rain of swords and then finishes it off with the giant fucking boulder out of nowhere seem more like a final fantasy game to me, but not dragon age
Do companions do anything? Do they take damage? Are they just there to launch special attacks/setup combos from off screen? Is there an aggro system based on defensive units keeping enemies away from other characters?
This doesn't really look like a game based on party setup or gameplay. Seems disappointing and lame imo.
Way too many flashes Bioware!
That's not good for sight among other things.
2 basic hits is all it takes to nearly wipe a sword and shield warriors health bar. 😢
[Weeps hysterically]
You can adjust the damage you and enemies takes individually, as well as how aggresive they are. So i won't be a problem
@@ddmaster08it's got big "choose your fighter" energy.
It can be a good game, just don't tell me it's RPG. It can be a good game, just don't tell me it's a spiritual successor to anything that's come before. It can be a good game, just don't tell me it's good dragon age.
@@Seeker794 chill bruh
@@Seeker794 Exactly my feeling... from what i have seen so far RPG elements are diminishing while cool action is the focus
I cant believe that a game we waited 10 years looks like a mobile fortnite
This is just not what I want from Dragon Age. I miss the slower, more strategic combat. I can't even tell what the companions are doing here.
not only you. it has nothing to do with DAO, just call it The Veilguard .
They're running around like headless chickens doing no damage.
It's one of the best games of all time because of the role-playing capabilities and meaningful choices, not because of the combat. The combat is actually a turn off for many people considering buying the game
that menu look crisp!! I like it. Very excited to be able to play this in 2 months!!!
I dissociated from the pretty colors, what happened
Damn warrior build looks fun as hell ngl
This analysis makes no sense
i am absolutely pooping myself in excitement. also the music is banging. i can't wait omggggg perhaps those 10 years will be worth the wait after all
healing charges again? oh no.
There are also healing spells and healing pots to
Why so many random cuts? And why does this look less engaging than Inquisition? 😔
I remember in Inquisition I hated just having basically 7 ability slots cause one was automatically reserved for your focus ability, and worse for mages, basically 6 slots cause you needed that barrier too..smh I used to go off, "How you not gonna let me use an ability I already know?!" lol
the more gameplay i see, the less i wanna play it
I'm the opposite. Hated the first trailer, liked the 2nd one, loved this combat one (big Mass Effect and Trespasser fan here!).
Same ngl, I loved the previous 3 games but this looks awful to me
