How Greece Is Stopping China's Plan For World Domination

  • Over the last 2 decades, China has been rapidly monopolizing every aspect of world trade. From buying out the worlds ports in almost every country on the planet, to being the worlds supplier of nearly 30% of the worlds goods, China has made itself the king of every aspect of World trade…
Well that is except for one aspect. Shipping. you see, despite investing hundreds of billions of dollars into their shipping industry, China is still behind two much smaller nations in regards to its shipping power.
Japan by most metrics is the 2nd most powerful shipping nation in the world, while having a population 91% smaller than that of China’s. But this somewhat makes sense as Japan in popular culture has been known as the top shipbuilding nation in the world for the past 100 years.
However, the true shipping superpower of the world is actually the small Mediterranean nation of Greece. You see, greece has a population of just 10 million people, thats about half the population of the state of new york, or 30% less than the population of the los angeles metropolitan area.
Yet, despite having a population that is 140 times smaller than China, Greece has been the worlds shipping superpower for much of the past 50 years.
Meaning that if your country imports bulk resources like oil, metals, coal, or grain...Or if you have simply bought an item from overseas, then you have most likely relied upon a Greek ship at some point in recent memory.
But that brings up the question. How did such a small country become the dominant player in one of the worlds largest industries? And what does this mean for you, the economy, and the worlds superpowers going forward?
Well...if you were to take a look at a map of Greece, you would see one of the key reasons why Greece has been a key player in the worlds shipping industry for over 2000 years.
First of all, 80% of Greece is covered in mountains. And even though there are some benefits to having a mountainous country, one of the downsides is that it is tough to grow large quantities of food. So throughout history, the Greeks have turned to the sea in order to get fish, and turned to maritime trade in order to get food like wheat and resources like Gold.
Secondly, Greece is a nation with over 5000 islands, and hundreds of which are populated. Meaning that having an up to date shipping industry was vital to the island population centers.
And lastly, Greece is in a unique geographical position in the world. It is essentially in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, it is close to the suez Canal...which is one the most important trade routes in the world, and it also has a short land connection to some of the wealthiest european nations in the world. Meaning that Greece has been destined to be a maritime, and trading nation ever since it made its geographical boundaries.
However, in modern times, it wasn’t until about 80 years ago that Greece would truly begin to takeover the worlds shipping industry.
You see, in the early 1900’s, Greece was a top 10 shipping nation in the world, but it was far behind the more powerful countries like Great Britain, The United States, and Germany..
You see, after world war 2, where Greek ships played a key role in helping the allies win the war...Several Greek businessmen thought of an idea. What if they invested heavily in the shipyards of the nations that needed to be rebuilt from the war?
Well thats what Greek businessmen like Aristotle Onassis did. For example, Onassis in 1949 invested in West German shipyards, and placed 36 large ship orders during the next several years. He also invested heavily into Japanese and other south east asian countries as well. He also began to buy up ships that were being sold off by the united states after the war as well.
And because of this, Aristotle Onassis would go on to become the largest private shipping fleet owner in the world.
But he wasn’t the only greek that had this strategy. Other Greek businessmen like Stavros Niarchos ended up doing the exact same thing. And that is why by the 1960’s, about a dozen Greek shipowners had the largest shipping fleet in the world. And they became known as the Golden Greeks.
    Transcript too long. End Here.

Hey everyone! So...I had this video written and recorded a few days ago, but after editing it, I realized it wasn't up to my standards. So I actually re-wrote this entire video and re-recorded 2 days ago. And well...here it is. What are your thoughts one Greek shipping, and China's belt and road initiative? Let me know in the comments down below!
Also...One more key thing I didn't include was that Greek shipowners typically fly the flags of tax-haven countries to save on fees, taxes, and regulations. I just didn't find a great place to include that in this video

The title is the complete opposite of what is actually happening according to this article. China is taking over Greek shipping ports and will soon build more ships than the Greeks. And now they have to shift gears from shipping oil to containers in order to try and be competitive. So how is Greece stopping China?

They claim to be the pillar of the economy alongside tourism, but in reality they don't pay enough in taxes and only a small portion of the population benefits directly by working in the shiping industry. The majority of the crews are either from Philippines or Eastern Europe and that's because they are really cheap to hire. So, my point was that Greece is not stoping China. To the contrary Greece sold a portion of its biggest port to them. If greek ship owners are stopping China from doing anything they are doing it on their own and Greece doesn't have much to do with it.

The reason why the Greeks are successful in this business is because the Greeks are the only ones that know how to run this business. It doesn't matter how small the country is compared to China. The Chinese and other countries tried to surpass the Greeks in shipping but they couldn't. You mentioned about Aristotle Onassis. I have news for you he was nothing compared to other Greek shipping families. These people are very low profile. The Greek shipping dynasty way surpasses the country Greece. They are a nation of their own and I'm talking trillions here! Most of the greek-owned ships fly flags of convenience! No one will ever surpass them in this business.

As a greek I grew up reading all the myths and stories of my Forefathers and general philosophy by Socrates , plato and Aristotle. Once I met some tourists from China while I myself was visiting athens as a daytrip.
After we showed them around (we were speaking English as I've studied in the UK ) they stuck around and we eventually had dinner together .
They ended up telling me that even during the ancient times dating back at their mythologies, they referred to the Greeks as ' Si La ' . Which literally means ' The other Great Civilization '
    And that amazed me .

But you are missing an important point. China was one of the very few countries willing to invest in Greece during Greece's financial crisis. Greece made clear that it would always favor investments from its European partners, but no European country wanted to invest in Greece. So in the end, China took the opportunity and won big time.

Well, the last two years, ie since you approximately made this video, Greek shipowners built the most vessels than any other country globally. On February 2022 the Greek shipowners were building 187 new ships and invested $15bil holding the youngest fleet globally. According to Value Vessels the value of the Greek owned fleet, rised by 32% *within the last three years.* Therefore they intent to keep this 1st place and they 'll probably keep it, for, as you probably know, the shipbuilding industry has its limitations on how many vessels it can built. So the Greeks not only they make the most deals for new ships, but they also *prevent others* from building new ships for themselves. *Also,* the last ~12 years, they had the "crazy" idea to build the largest LNG fleet in the world, if you get what this mean nowadays... Furtermore, they had the craziest idea to invest in LNG storing making Greece the only European country which already has two LNG storing and regasification facilities, making the country rapidly an energy hub. And this while for example Germany has no such facilities (last month they decided to build one such). So, you probably need to update this video (somehow). *Finally,* China returned no favor; they invested in a Europe's key harbour, with the USA (which also invested in Greek harbours) keep wondering to this day how they missed this opportunity and how they allowed China to put in hand such an important asset.

They orchestrated strikes in the German shipyards mentioned in this video to stop his expansion and bombed sone of his ships in Argentina, but in every step of the way he was ahead of them. He infamously had insured his ships with Lloyd's that was forced to compensate him with largest ever amount at that time for the damages inflicted by the US government, ultimately making him richer than he was before, all thanks to the desperation of CIA.

    • @lisabuttonz

Rob Langada yes that’s true but the context of the phrase “rule the seas” meaning the dominance of trade. Unfortunately the USA does and the therefore has no ship building or ship trade.

And that is stopping China although the economic situation is changing. But still raw materials ( oil, processed metals etc) still need greek and other European based, or originated, shipping companies, such as the Norwegians, Cypriots, British and others for transoceanic transportation.

Thousands of people found job with this investment while other countries didn't want to invest in Greece. Pereaus is gonna be No1 port if it's not already in the Mediterranean and in top 5 ports of whole Europe and that is huge. I'm sorry if America or Germany loose something about that but we really don't care, you do your business we do ours

I 'd just like to add that Germany tried to get in the game. Before 2008, Germany was 4th biggest fleet in trade, and shipped about 26% of world total tonnage. *After the crisis Germany's total tonnage tanks to 2%*, which resulted in a ton of German ships being sold to Greek trade companies.
This is one of the key reasons why Germany is so butthurt with the Greek crisis, and tries its hardest to strangle greek economy, with a decade-old austerity.

He felt in love with Niarchos' daughter but Niarchos rejected his offer because he was a nobody. Onassis founded his own company and was obsessed with two things : sail bigger boats than Niarchos and marrying most prominent women that Niarchos' daughter. Onassis was the first to sail supertankers. Also he married Maria Callas divorced her and remarried with Jacky Kennedy. Greeks being Greeks.
