I'm constantly admiring the craftsmanship of that ravine 🤣It came up 100x better than I thought it would. So much so that I want to scale it up in another build!
Thanks for the shoutout! The video came out fantastic! It’s such a striking composition. I’m looking forward to seeing it with the hydrocotyle grown in.
You're most welcome! It's always fun working with these little modules. This HC Japan has been growing out of water in another tank so I'm hoping to spreads pretty fast! It should look amazing!
Finally getting around to commenting in this! It looks so good and I hope I can make a good clay background like that eventually! Also I can't wait for the vertical tank 🎉❤
Cheers! Clay is really great fun to work with. I've been using it for the last 6 or so months in different projects and you can really do some cool stuff with it!
Great video as usual! It's gonna be interesting to see if the two crabs choose a side of the tank each. It was a great addition with the clay, I have never thought about using other stuff than foam. Keep up the good work! Have you ever thought about getting into dwarf crayfish? They are awesome, easy to keep and are highly entertaining to watch
@Eck5k thanks 😊 clays really interesting to work with and way nicer than foams. I can't stand that stuff 🤣 Dwarf crayfish are great but at the moment I don't have any space for a new range of critters though they are on my list at some stage.
@civicfreik So far it's working really well! This is my third tank using a fair bit of clay. The other videos will be coming soon but I've had those tanks running for months and I haven't found any issues with using it at all. Plants grow great on on it too and their roots help add stability.
@@micronet3 As long as it doesn't dry out and has something to stick to (texture) it's really good. But you shouldn't have issues with it drying out in a paludarium.
Ooooh! I Love this living background idea! I was planning on my future builds to have a sheet of cork and then building little planters onto that, but this is so much better! I wonder how fertilizing that mud wall with root tabs will turn out it extra nutrients end up being needed in a long term setup. I'm excited to see that vertical build as that's my next project.
If got a couple of longer term clay projects going that use cork and clay together and they are doing really well. As for nutrients I haven't seen any issues yet but you could easily push little nutrient boosters into the clay if you needed them. The best part is that you can even mold the clay into little planter style shapes to plant plants into directly. There are a lot of great options.
Thank you! I'm really hoping the HC covers that entire back wall! I think it will look amazing. If it works as well as I'm hoping I've got quite a few interesting ideas to play around with!
Very inspiring build. I'm going to use some of your techniques in future project. But I'm not a big fan of plastics modules in natural habitat. Thx for the content
@arnaudhugon1246 it's a miniature version of what I'd like to think a sustainable future might entail on another world 😉 Make sure you're subbed for the next video because it will be exactly what you're looking for inspiration wise.
@YANTARNIY Hello, yep, you'll still need them to account for condensation and water from misting. But you don't need as deep of a layer. 1 inch or a few cms is usually enough. Just make sure you have a plan to siphon the excess water out though as it builds up. I stopped using solid separation barriers and switched to this method to save a ton of maintenance. I got sick of draining the land section out.
@YANTARNIY when you mist the tank (you have to keep humidity) and water the plants the water will drain through into the bottom of the tank. And it will slowly build up over time. The water section will evaporate as well then condensate onto the glass all over the tank. Then it will run down the glass and fill the substrate layer. So water will always find a way back there. As far as advantages it can be easier to clean out the entire water section if you ever need to. I'd generally only use a separate water section if it was a temporary tank. Full underlying subtlstrates are just way easier to maintain from my experience and you never have to worry about leaks. If your glass separation wall leaks its a nightmare.
1:54 is the clay inexpensive? And do you recommend it because I am planning to do a very large palladium and I’m iffy on using spray foam because this project is going to be quite large and I want to know what would be best.
@WolfPackDragons I don't use spray foam anymore. It's just not a nice feeling. Makes things feel to artificial. The clay I got was about 1.50 a kg and I bought about 10kgs (haven't used it all yet) but I'm in Europe so prices may vary where you are. I have another build concept dropping on Saturday you'll find helpful as well it uses cork and clay in combo
@ awesome thank you I appreciate your response and I am a big fan of your page. Your notifications are set so I will be waiting for that next drop thank you.
Yep! I do it all the time, have for many years. But it does come with potential risks like pests sometimes. You just have to check things well and don't collect anything from places it might be illegal. Like national parks etc.
@@IndoorEcosystem I am new to crab hobby. I have not started keeping any as of yet. Should I start with a basic paludarium for a week at least to test my skills?
Check how the soil temps are doing rather than the air temps. You'll probably find the soil is nice and warm. If they are drops down a bit overnight etc but the soil stays warm you won't have to worry. As for mat suggestions I don't really have any. I'm just using a range of generic ones I find online. Most of which seem to be mass produced re-lables of the same cheap stuff coming out of china.
@@asystoleD Stuff will still grow in it but it's pretty pointless as far as I'm concerned. I've used clay in a few tanks now with the oldest going for about 6 months and I haven't had any cracking issues. You just need to make sure the environment is humid and moist which most tanks are. If you are planning something that will dry out fully it will crack.

Hi. And if there is a glass partition for the water part, do you necessarily need clay balls for the substrate?

@@harryfenzleiniii6274 You'll need a lot more than a week. The general rule is 4 - 6 weeks for the best success. The longer the better though.
