In my humble opinion, Jay is the best male contestant ever. His dancing ability is not up for question. However, it’s his partnering skills that make him stand out above all others. And he was just so sweet! 🥰

Sometimes the thing that really makes a dance isn't even a dance move ... that hand of Jay's running down from his hair and down his face was magical and so emotive.

What I loved about this is that there were no high production values, no backing dancers, no distractions, not even the most daring choreography- just two people dancing and telling a story. Stunning.
They didn't have an elaborate stage set-up or back-up dancers and still killed it. Absolutely stunning!
Much like when I saw his Jive, it's a case of knowing you're watching something special. This was truly brilliant.
The romance, the story and the beauty of it actually take you away from what was a technically demanding dance, that was made to look absolutely effortless by Jay. Aliona is a marvelous teacher as well.

+IUPLOADALLSORTS Next weekend he has the Viennese Waltz and the Charleston. I Personally think he's going to nail the VW, as I recall that beautifully choreographed and elegantly danced Waltz he did back in week 2. Not normally a big fan of slow dances, but that Waltz was something else, have re-watched many times. Unforgettable. Not too sure about the Charleston, he might surprise me. But even when Jay isn't at his very best, it's still always an absolute pleasure to watch him dance. He was my winner from the very start.
+Elizabeth Cutler You are so right about the 'bum note' ! I hope the musician has 'fallen on his sword'! It didn't detract anything from this amazing performance for me though.
+Claire Stapley is the upcoming week the last time they're doing unlearned dances? cause he hasn't done a samba yet and i think all of us really wanna see how amazing a samba from them would be
+Armando Gee Unfortunately no, we won't see a Samba from Jay. They all skip one dance and in Jay's case, that's the one we lose.
He has this superb ability to combine strength with softness, be commandeering yet tender, vulnerable but strong and it all transpire somehow through his dancing. Epic!! What a team.....

Well goddam it that was beautiful.. If ever people needed prove of Jays dancing ability and the chemistry he has with Aliona then this is it.. and with 39 points Jay becomes the highest scoring male celeb in SCD history for a Rumba XX

Such a beautiful heartbreaking dance. The strength and vulnerability Jay showed was amazing. Aliona was in my opinion the best female professional ever. Wonderful dancer and choreographer. I watch there dances regularly and it is 2022.
I can't watch this without filling up, it's like looking at something so romantic and intimate you just want to leave them alone so they can carry on dancing. Just beautiful xXx
I know the rumours about Jay and Aliona are not true, but it did make me laugh in the VT when they said "once is the story of a musician who falls in love with a married woman"...did make me giggle!
I am still pondering about that...not sure if she wants to make a declaration of her love to Jay public or just kill us with curiosity...all the songs she chose can somewhat be interpreted that way...no doubt she has some sort of feelings for Jay...you can love 2 persons in your life...it is the only couple where there is tangible chemistry...she never looked this way with previous dance partners and was not even married...the chemistry is even more powerful than between Georgia and Giovanni...Aliona could barely talk after the dance...

I am shocked that there are rumours about the two of them, Ive consistently (until this week) thought that the two really lacked any chemistry, whether it be love or sex. I thought this was either because Jay had never been in love so just disnt know how to convey those emotions, or because the two had too proffesional a relationship that lacked the warmth that, for example, Georgia and Giovanni or Kellie and Kevin excel at.
+Atalanta Sawdon Being unable to convey romantic chemistry has nothing to do with "never having been in love"; the vast majority of celebrities on the show have been in some kind of relationship and most of them have been unable to convey chemistry. Same as singing. It's got nothing to do with someone's personal history- you've either got the knack or you haven't- otherwise my parents would be fabulously charismatic dancers. And they're not.
Agreed with Darcey's comment that it brought a tear to the eye, because it was just so romantic and you can see how hard Jay is trying, and he's succeeding every week! Jay and Aliona were just so graceful and intense together in this performance, and their previous ones, and Craig is just nitpicking at things now because he knows full well Jay's at a professional level with very little mistakes! There's no way he "might" be there next week, he WILL be there next week

loved this and I don't normally like Rumbas! really proud of him! I saw a lot of people doubting how well he'd do, because 'rumba is hard, especially for men', but he went and smashed it!

really, I think Jay should win it all. I'm going to be so mad if he doesn't. Because remember, no pro has ever won Strictly a 2nd time. In keeping with that streak, I feel Jay may be doomed to 2nd place, just because he's with Aliona. I am REALLY hoping he can break the curse. And Aliona, honestly, is a person very deserving of the 2-time champion title. Jay has shown he is leaps and bounds above the rest of the competition. Especially with how quickly he became the last man standing. He's just been something remarkable to watch and I'm happy for that.
Yup, really romantic. One of the best rumbas done this series and one of the best male celeb rumbas done in the entire 13 series of SCD too. Very fluid, musical, and with loads of basic rumba steps, with that figure-eight hip rotation done really well, not just at the hip section, but right up to his arms and tips of his fingers. A solid nine or 9.5, and possibly a ten or two from the judges I am sure...

+liesiezie Well done them! This is possibly the highest scored male celeb rumba (barring Xmas Special by Matt Di Angelo) in the whole of SCD history! So Jay finally peaked, and what a time to peak too! The reason I score him up to a 9.5 and just short of a 10 is only because I don't like that move when he balanced on one leg, that bit at 1:11 he should create more tension with Aliona, thus creating a more dynamic line for that sort of move, but it looked almost like he was doing a dog wee. But otherwise the rest of it I am mightily impressed...
+Scd Observer That's what I liked about it - it was so natural. That hip movement did not look forced because he was using his whole body to create the shape, not just trying to stick his hips out and hoping that would count as rotation. He really understands movement. And it was very masculine too. Clever Aliona - no 'sexiness' to put him out of his comfort zone, but lots of 'love'. Well deserved top of the leaderboard last night.

Best dance of the night by a mile. This is so expressive and romantic, very beautiful and moving. I think Jay is going to be very hard to beat in the final!

+Elizabeth Cutler Oh, I know. I was furious! That beautiful move that Craig pointed out and Darcey swooned over could barely be seen. I had seen it in the training footage and he nailed it every time. Deceptively difficult and so perfectly performed. So sad that most people will now not see it properly.

+Elizabeth Cutler I know. The camera work on this show is frequently a source of irritation! I wish they would show us the dancers in full body shots - instead they often cut them off at the waist so we cannot see their footwork.
The level of technique that Jay has reached throughout the weeks is outstanding
I also thought this was the best dance of the night and felt so emotional watching this. he has to be in the final. I don't know if anybody agrees but I think it's harder in some ways for a man to win because he leads the lady and also is a major part in pulling off the lifts. I think it's going to be a tough final this year as everyone is so good.
The judges scored them 9 10 10 10.

His footwork most of the time is just out of this world. I find rumba as one of the most difficult dances and still remember how I used to struggle with it lol

Jay's partnering throughout last year's comp was just exceptional. It not just doing the moves it's understanding why you are doing them. He really got that.
OMG, she was so beautiful, and I don't just mean her physical beauty. She made him the dancer he was, who wouldn't want to do the best they could for her.

Whilst I think a case can be made for any of the remaining celebs to be worthy winners of the glitterball, I think Jay has been the most consistent in his overall delivery of each of the dances and this rumba is no exception. It is nothing short of fantastic.

Of course it isn't that's why I haven't bothered tuning in what I have seen of this years cast there's no warmth it's all too competitive with Danny being the professional he is and now Ore the apparent guy who beat Jays Jive too desperate of a year for me nothing will ever be the same with Aliona's departure non of the pros could touch her talent.

@@oracle3569 Danny is a professional ACTOR not dancer. Lots of people on Strictly before have been actors whose training included dance classes. Jill Halfpenny is a case in point. Ore's jive was just a whole load of kicks without much else. I didn't like that at all!
Having said that Jay is outstanding in the rumba which should have got full marks. So glad he won!

I can't decide whether I want them to do this dance or their tango again! They scored higher and this was gorgeous, but their tango was arresting and I preferred Prince's "When Doves cry" as a song.

+Lauren Blakemore Isn't it just so frustrating? Is it just pure ignorance on the part of the producers? It's not as though they don't have time to plan this out in advance - the camera angles are rehearsed. So why put the most gorgeous move in the routine on a high angle lens so it can barely be seen?

+Lauren Blakemore I thought it was a perfect view! I want to see the sliding doors (with an embellished spin Jay did) in forwards and backwards that's so typical of a rumba, and I for one am GLAD the producers chose a high vantage point to showcase Jay's ability to dance like that.

it's such a strange coincidence for me personally that they danced to this song. the whole week before they did, without any knowledge that they were going to dance to this, I had fallen back in love with 'falling slowly' again and had been listening to it repeatedly because I love the song and the film so much. to then see my favourite couple dance to the song I had had in my head all week was really bizarre but also kind of magical. their dance definitely incapsulated the song and it's meaning and I'm so glad that it was jay who performed to it. first he dances a pulp fiction inspired dance and then dances to 'falling slowly' from once, the man has amazing taste.

I don't think some people understand the weight of human emotions when they critique performance value for some people are much more reserved in showing their emotions so when they show even a little of their feelings it means more than it would coming from someone more expressive and energetic Jay to me seems like a reserved and held back kind of guy and I think the judges have also noticed this

(This is Mike's wife commenting he would not want you to think he was interested in Strictly). I don't mind Tess as a presenter but I wish she would not talk during the judge's session. The atmosphere after this rumba was electric, the audience went into an almost stunned silence but it was killed by Tess's inconsequential chat and giggling. She treated Jay like a 5 year old, talking about how cute he was and when she asked if we could see "that cheeky smile again" I cringed with embarrassment, he's a 25 year old man for goodness sake. His band mates were in the audience, can you imagine the stick he would get about his "cheeky smile". let's hope that in future Tess announces the judges by name and leaves the talking to them.
+Mike Benn - Mike's wife, I absolutely agree, I was cringing for him too. As you say, he's 25 not 5 and she completely ruined the atmosphere after that beautiful emotional dance by her silly prattling. She is talking too much after the dances and should just shut up and let the judges speak.

I really loved the storytelling of this dance. I thought he had really nice musicality and fluidity in his arms, his footwork was pretty neat and precise although a heel lead in rumba is a big no-no. However, I think it needed more hip action and I think he lost balance slightly or made a mistake at 1:12. Usually for that move to work the male has to really support the female and the female should be able to lean away from the male but in this move it just looked like Aliona went into the position and spun back on her own without much help from Jay. I personally would give this a solid 9. Certainly one of the best male rumbas on Strictly that I've seen.
This reminds me of Catherine and Johannes’ rumba this year w/ the same piano, guitar and fairy lights 😂
