Stepantsminda (formerly Kazbegi) is a city in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of northeastern Georgia. Historically and ethnographically, the city is part of the province of Khevi. It is the center of the municipality of Kazbegi.Large mountains rise above the city on all sides. The region's most notable mountain, Mount Kazbek of the Side Range, is located directly west of the city.
Mount Kazbek is a dormant stratovolcano and one of the main mountains of the Caucasus, located in Georgia, south of the border with Russia.It is located at an altitude of 5,054 meters above sea level.
The Church of the Holy Trinity of Gergeti is near the village of Stepantsminda. The church is located on the right bank of the Chkheri River (left tributary of the Terek River), at an altitude of 2170 meters, under Mount Kazbek.
