The throat slicing is wrong, for cinematic purposes I assume. During ww1 and ww2 how they taught soldiers to use a knife to silently take out sentries and guards is a lot more brutal. There's no dragging the knife across the throat and slicing it open. Instead you'd approach from behind, grab the target across the mouth and stab the knife from one side straight through the neck, to pierce the juggular vein on both left and right side of the neck. Then with the knife through the neck you'd punch forward with the hand holding the knife, tearing your target open from the spine forward. Severed the juggular, tore out the throat, windpipe, vocal cords everything. Target cant do a sound, only the struggling remnant of the windpipe would gurgle silently as they'd bleed out in seconds. Way, way messier than they portray in cinema.

The bond and attachment Jimmy had with that Mark 1 Trench knife was probably one of my favorite details of the show. I feel that the Mark 1 was its own character in the show, it was Jimmy’s only real friend up until he met Richard, before that everyone close to Jimmy hurt him badly except of course his son. Jimmy never had any one he could to turn to for help. That Mark 1 trench knife though, never hurt Jimmy in fact that M1 trench knife did more for him then his own parents ever did, it was always there to help him, it was always there to protected him, if Jimmy was in trouble he could count on the Mark 1 to bail him out like it has done many times before. If you pay attention through out the show, it seems that Jimmy is always making sure that knife is, there even if he’s unaware of that action, it’s most noticeable during the scene where they’re discussing Greek town in Chicago, it’s as if Jimmy subconsciously has to make sure it’s there even though that move almost got him killed. He says he forgot he had it but when the hell does Jimmy ever not have that thing? It’s with him 24/7 because it did the one thing that a mother or father need to do for their kid and that’s make them feel safe even if they might not be to do so.
Rambo has a similar relationship lol. I remember being like 10 or 11 and my dad letting me get Rambos knife from First Blood from this knife shop in Helen, GA and being so psyched. It was HUGE lol. Even had the compass and fishing line and what not in the handle. I remember trotting through the woods and mountains exploring with my friends with that thing on my belt, thinking I was Rambo lol. Loved that thing, wonder what happened to it

I agree, I felt they rushed Jimmy’s death, it was well written and perfectly executed, (especially that final scene showing him in the trenches) but I can’t help but feel as if they could have carried in his storyline arc for a season more. And since we’re on the subject of rushed/killed off characters, what about Richard Harrow?!? The guy had one of the most interestingly beautiful storylines. It was almost gothic in its approach (plus Harrow stole every scene he was in). The guy was known to be this sharp shooting, cold, calculated and ruthless killer. Effective, yet so kind. A man truly (literally and figuratively) destroyed by war, yet the writers decided to let him accidentally kill an innocent person!?!? Chalkys fucking daughter no doubt! Don’t get me wrong, I knew Harrow was going to probably die, I knew there wouldn’t be any redemption or salvation. But how they wrote his death was appalling. And don’t even get me started on Rothstein! Deciding to give him an off screen death is absolutely criminal.

Or have seen more of Joe Masseria because the actor playing him just had that stage presence that really sold that Joe was *the* “Boss of Bosses.” I mean we could probably go on for hours of missed opportunities in Boardwalk Empire either because missteps like Jimmys rather quick tenure as an antagonist and even quicker death or because of HBO pulling the rug out from underneath everyone by cutting things short (pretty much what they did with Rome) like Rothsteins offscreen death and how just generally rushed everything at the end was.

I used to have to kill sheep in a similar way, except they had to be wrestled out of the pen by hand and held down over the drain while we pulled the head back over our knees. Watching this video, I can tell you 100% that the cut wasn't deep enough in the jugular regions, and wouldn't have killed him that quickly or at all. Silly Hollywood never gets anything right.

Took thirty minutes before the tension pneumothorax built up and I stopped breathing completely and had to have a needle decompression.

The major screw up before betraying Nucky was due to Al Capone screwing up the robbery which happened again because Jimmy couldn't lead and control him. He was a good soldier but he kept being manipulated and pushed into a leadership position by his family members. On top of that the last straw was Nucky claiming he never cared for Jimmy and it was all done out of guilt. That further destroyed Jimmy knowing that the only person he thought was looking out for his best interest didn't do so out of kindness but guilt.
@jims7383he should have stuck to the deal he made with Nucky at the end of season 1, rather than going with his father's plan to get him convicted. He was effectively running most of Nucky's bootlegging operation and on commission of about 10%. At Nucky's side, he could have carried on learning the politics and how to keep a large operation running till he was ready to take over the whole thing.
Jimmy Darmody was my best character in the series. To this day, I still think about him, and thank's for TH-cam, I can come back for some memories of him. Very well made character
I loved Jimmy’s weapons. First it was the WWI trench knife, then the 1908 Colt, various other blades and shotguns, then finally he’s busts out the Colt 1911. Definitely the most interesting and unique character on Boardwalk Empire or perhaps ever on television. Should have given him one more season before the final Nucky showdown.
Jimmy was the best supporting character in my opinion because he had such a strong influence over seasons 1 and 2. Plus he was a likeable guy for the most part. Although I thought season 4 was very good as well. I liked the tension between Chalky and Narcisse.
I kind of wished Jimmy lasted longer though. I read they chose to end his character early because the actor for the commodore was sick in real life so they made him the one who tried to take over Atlantic city. Still if he did survive, he would of died anyways and we wouldnt get that sort of epic ending to the series
Jimmy was my favorite character, so conflicted when he came back he tried his relationship but it fell apart but he tried his best to be a good dad still, he befriended Richard Harrow, a guy everyone else had abandoned, he saw a little bit of himself in the broken spirit of harrow, since the war. His chemistry with nucky, having pimped his mother but then mentored him only to end up being killed it really disappointed me since the character was so tragic but so epic at the same time. Kinda ruined the show in a way for me although I enjoyed it until the hasty ending and conclusions of S5.
I feel the same way. You can even tell, watching Season 2, that the decision to kill him was made really late in the game. The entire arc for Jimmy is seeming to set him up for a rise to power in spite of his past, and a break from his controlling mother to become his own man. Nucky Vs. Jimmy would have been a hell of a season 3.
It would have been. That was actually the original plan. However the actor who play jimmy became a problem on set. He show up high. Tried to start fights and would hold everyone up. The producers had no choice but to fire him which force them to kill the character off.

@Wilhelm I heard that it was because Nucky was getting away from being the main character (they realized Jimmy was way more interesting) but they had to get the audience to remember he's the main character so they got rid of Jimmy's storyline. By season 3, Jimmy would have been the "main character", or at least the character the audience cares about and wants to see most.

Ever seen someone get their throat slit… they try to duck their chin but it’s already cut before they can do anything else. Most just drop to the floor, the blood loss causes them to pass out in seconds. There’s just not enough time to really react. In some cases if the wound isn’t too deep people may clutch at the throat to prevent the bleeding… but ultimately it all depends on the depth of the wound. Shock also plays a massive factor into whether people can operate their bodies with calculated movement. Some people freeze up.

IMO this series lost a lot of it´s appeal when Jimmy died and I´m not sure why to be honest. He wasn´t the most likeable character but for some reason he was my favourite and when Nucky killed him I also lost my second favourite character since I don´t really like Nucky cause of that :/

Parents like that, Jimmy never stood a chance at being balanced and 'normal'. For me, the show did lose a little something when he died, but the Capone and Luciano exchanges as well as the Rosetti story lines sorta made up for it.. Around mid 4th season shit dipped again though, and never fully recovered.
I don't think the show died when Jimmy died, but I do think that season 4 was a weak season considering there wasn't any kind of sadistic character to fill his (or Rossetti's) void. Hope they introduce someone interesting in season 5, especially without Richard Harrow.

From what I read about Jimmy being killed off... I DID hear he was a pain to work with but that they intended on killing him off at some point in the series. He is a fictional character so it only makes sense. Also ---- Not sure if it's true. Think I read the father of Jimmy in the series may have had been battling cancer during the show. So once Jimmy killed him I guess it put him next in line... Think they were trying to wait until Season 3... - Love the show. Fascinated with that era in history. Only really ever heard about Al Capone so it has opened the doors to a lot more gangsters from that time.

Jimmy said to Nucky "You can't be half a gangster". Nucky said to Eli "Blood is thicker than water". No matter what way you want to look at it, Jimmy betrayed Nucky. Plain and simple. Nucky had a choice: Kill Jimmy, who has no family ties to him whatsoever, or kill Eli, his brother. Like I said before "Blood is thicker than water" Jimmy had to die in order for the show's realism. I would not have watched to show if Jimmy did not die because I would know that it was not realistic. Jimmy accepted his fate. His fans should too. Boardwalk empire is a gangster show, not a family sitcom.
Jimmy killing those two men at the fountain is probably one of my favorite scenes from this show. The atmosphere of that quiet night made it perfect.

The actor Michael Pittman was constantly causing problems on set and he was hard to work with so I think that had alot to do with it too

We forget, in the fountain scene he knew they were coming so he switched the knife to his waist from his boot
feel slightly sorry for all the people that took a hissy fit and stopped watching after jimmy died, they missed all of gyp rosetti
I loved Jimmy’s weapons. First it was the WWI trench knife, then the 1908 Colt, various other blades and shotguns, then finally he’s busts out the Colt 1911. Definitely the most interesting and unique character on Boardwalk Empire or perhaps ever on television. Should have given him one more season before the final Nucky showdown.
Never spotted the 1911 before. I always associated that gun with WWII and Vietnam, didn't know it came out in the late 1890's. Very cool.

Jimmy was the best supporting character in my opinion because he had such a strong influence over seasons 1 and 2. Plus he was a likeable guy for the most part.
Although I thought season 4 was very good as well. I liked the tension between Chalky and Narcisse.
I kind of wished Jimmy lasted longer though. I read they chose to end his character early because the actor for the commodore was sick in real life so they made him the one who tried to take over Atlantic city. Still if he did survive, he would of died anyways and we wouldnt get that sort of epic ending to the series
By far the best character of the entire series.
Bill the butcher taught me that the first stab he gave the commodore was just a "wound" he could have survived
The racking of the shotgun sound while it's on screen and not moving just opened my eyes to sound design in movies and tv shows.....

I felt bad for Incrocci and Scarpelli at 3:42; those two didn't even see it coming. Christ....
Jimmy was my favorite character, so conflicted when he came back he tried his relationship but it fell apart but he tried his best to be a good dad still, he befriended Richard Harrow, a guy everyone else had abandoned, he saw a little bit of himself in the broken spirit of harrow, since the war. His chemistry with nucky, having pimped his mother but then mentored him only to end up being killed it really disappointed me since the character was so tragic but so epic at the same time. Kinda ruined the show in a way for me although I enjoyed it until the hasty ending and conclusions of S5.
I feel the same way. You can even tell, watching Season 2, that the decision to kill him was made really late in the game. The entire arc for Jimmy is seeming to set him up for a rise to power in spite of his past, and a break from his controlling mother to become his own man. Nucky Vs. Jimmy would have been a hell of a season 3.
It would have been. That was actually the original plan. However the actor who play jimmy became a problem on set. He show up high. Tried to start fights and would hold everyone up. The producers had no choice but to fire him which force them to kill the character off.
@@tobyyawn24 3 years later lol, he was a problem on set, but not so much that they changed the direction of the show because of him, The commandore was supposed to be a bigger baddy, but the actor was receiving chemotherapy at the time, so the focus was shifted, meaning Jimmys arc had to go with It, scorcessi and the other directors said that, Jimmys actor being a bit “wild” on set, was not the issue of the plot shift
@Wilhelm I heard that it was because Nucky was getting away from being the main character (they realized Jimmy was way more interesting) but they had to get the audience to remember he's the main character so they got rid of Jimmy's storyline. By season 3, Jimmy would have been the "main character", or at least the character the audience cares about and wants to see most.

I too thought it wasn't worth watching after Jimmy died. I couldn't understand why they'd kill off such a great character after only two seasons, but I did keep watching and it got better and better... especially Richard!

Killing him was the biggest mistake this show made, that and hbo forcing them into a final time skip shortened season. Skipped the entire north side war in Chicago and even Arnold Rothstein was written out

I love how in tv shows and movies, people forget they have hands, legs, and a basic will to survive as soon as someone puts a knife to their throat.
Ever seen someone get their throat slit… they try to duck their chin but it’s already cut before they can do anything else. Most just drop to the floor, the blood loss causes them to pass out in seconds. There’s just not enough time to really react. In some cases if the wound isn’t too deep people may clutch at the throat to prevent the bleeding… but ultimately it all depends on the depth of the wound. Shock also plays a massive factor into whether people can operate their bodies with calculated movement. Some people freeze up.
Jimmy was a psychopath. Still one of the best characters that was on the show.

IMO this series lost a lot of it´s appeal when Jimmy died and I´m not sure why to be honest. He wasn´t the most likeable character but for some reason he was my favourite and when Nucky killed him I also lost my second favourite character since I don´t really like Nucky cause of that :/

Jimmy didn’t even want Nucky dead. And that actually says a lot about how much he actually loved him. If someone had pimped my mother out at 13 or even at all I would have a hard time NOT killing them. No matter who they are.

Yeah, the smart thing to do was stay loyal to Nucky until Nucky's time was up (which it wasn't yet) and then take over, but he had too much ego.
The killings in the fontain is the reason why Owen wasnt nucky s best right hand hitman, bet Jimmy wouldnt get retuned in a box whacked from that masseria hit. Even Al feared Jimmy, Jimmy feared no one, even certain death by nucky s hands.

Parents like that, Jimmy never stood a chance at being balanced and 'normal'.
For me, the show did lose a little something when he died, but the Capone and Luciano exchanges as well as the Rosetti story lines sorta made up for it.. Around mid 4th season shit dipped again though, and never fully recovered.

I don't think the show died when Jimmy died, but I do think that season 4 was a weak season considering there wasn't any kind of sadistic character to fill his (or Rossetti's) void. Hope they introduce someone interesting in season 5, especially without Richard Harrow.

From what I read about Jimmy being killed off... I DID hear he was a pain to work with but that they intended on killing him off at some point in the series. He is a fictional character so it only makes sense. Also ---- Not sure if it's true. Think I read the father of Jimmy in the series may have had been battling cancer during the show. So once Jimmy killed him I guess it put him next in line... Think they were trying to wait until Season 3...
- Love the show. Fascinated with that era in history. Only really ever heard about Al Capone so it has opened the doors to a lot more gangsters from that time.

Season 3 was so shit without Jimmy Darmody in it - They should have just killed off Nucky Thompson at the end of Season 2 and made the rest of the series about Richard and Jimmy.
Boardwalk Empire was never same without Jimmy but Gyp Rosetti was great villain in season 3,just pure psychopath

Jimmy said to Nucky "You can't be half a gangster". Nucky said to Eli "Blood is thicker than water". No matter what way you want to look at it, Jimmy betrayed Nucky. Plain and simple. Nucky had a choice: Kill Jimmy, who has no family ties to him whatsoever, or kill Eli, his brother. Like I said before "Blood is thicker than water" Jimmy had to die in order for the show's realism. I would not have watched to show if Jimmy did not die because I would know that it was not realistic.
Jimmy accepted his fate. His fans should too.
